There’s something fundamentally off-putting about humans chasing rewards in a system controlled by an algorithm that’s not public domain.

I just don’t feel it’s 1) safe 2) humane 3) smart 4) productive 5) contributing to societies

I wouldn’t mind if it was under public scrutiny and the smartest minds in the universities were working on it, with feedback from the society.

@mikemathia By statistics this is actually a very poor life lesson. The probability of the ocean killing you far exceeds the the probability of the island doing so before you attract the attention of a passing ship.

It’s also a deeply conservative life lesson. It presupposes a dog-eat-dog world where trust in the kindness of strangers is a mistake.

”Nobody is coming” is something I’d never teach my kid. It’s something people like Andrew Tate say.

Not mentioning satellites either.

These absolute fartwaffles can’t conceive of anyone having moral objections to bad things, because they don’t think people who aren’t like themselves have any value.

No, there must be some other reason.

Peer pressure. Not enough sex on campus (yes, really, Google it). Soros paying them. Antisemitism. Brainwashing.

Anything but the simplest explanation: good people demanding that bad people stop what they’re doing.

@thomasfuchs Remember though: True conservatives believe in their deepest of hearts that the true face of reality is a ruthless competition of who gets to rule over the other.

If the primary sense which you arrange the world by is domination, it logically follows all claims to care about others must simply be a deception to get them on the bottom and yourself on the top.

It’s not stupidity” in the true sense of the word really. A very different moral base. Dark & terrifying.

We’re angry that some people make themselves insanely wealthy by shortchanging workers, cutting corners in ways that hurt people and the planet, and by buying politicians to rewrite the rules in their favor.

What if they ”know better” that democracy’s purpose is only to provide a scaffolding for finding out the top predators of the next generation?

@ManyRoads This is the only strategy Russia knows. And the plan is to escalate it at least until 2026.

Europe has a lot to step up to. Russia operating at 7.1% GDP military spending would be nothing if EU did the same, but at current low spending, Russia does match it.

Only a high-output Europe will be able to leverage higher industrial capacity and let Ukraine win. Casualties mean nothing for them.

Russia has started running. But if we keep walking, they might have a chance.

@knowprose There are already signs of that in the southern former Soviet republics.

But also we see Belarus claiming Lithuania attacked with drones. Which is horseshit and internal propaganda for discrediting local democracy activists that work together with Lithuanians.

But it should be safe to assume that the Russia of today is on a permanent war footing. 20 years of Putinism has been a steady progress toward total cultural subjugation in service of a neo-imperial agenda.

Russia chooses it’s words to the Global South as ”the anti-colonialist”. And it works, because we tend to see colonialism through the lens of white-on-black imperialism.

Yet. No other nationality have been as thorough COLONIZERS as Russians. They have been effective at erasing entire cultures completely, one after another, making them Russian.

Russians never leave, never intend to leave. They force their culture on you

@knowprose Slavic people with their own languages and cultural histories were at a much better position than Siberian people, like those who spoke languages similar to mine.

There isn’t much left. What’s nowadays considered ”Russian heartland” used to be where people who spoke like me lived, just 600 years ago.

Now there live people who look like me, but speak Russian & identify as Russian.

@knowprose But yeah. After the WW2 and what slavic peoples had to endure being under the iron fist of communist regimes, many of them now hate Russia with a burning will. Even if Russia tries to speak of Slavic unity, they don’t desire to be raped by it again.

Past psychological claims to attention-seeking behaviour fell unverified. The point was only to annoy other people, to cause uncomfort in them.

As we’ve been seeing elsewhere so much these days: Cruelty is the point.

Perhaps we invented attention-seeking to distract ourselves from noticing how much we promote and love these people? 🤔

@MarkRDavid Depends on who you ask. Classical biker gangs used to ride Harleys and tended criminal. But now I think it’s not as clear-cut.

It’s worth mentioning also, that many cultures do tend to associate sadism, dominance & psychopathy with leadership. An evolved reverse-psychological trait perhaps, taking advantage of the deeper instinct of submission out of fear.
