"The biggest question raised by a future populated by unexceptional A.I., however, is existential. Should we as a society be investing tens of billions of dollars, our precious electricity that could be used toward moving away from fossil fuels, and a generation of the brightest math and science minds on incremental improvements in mediocre email writing?" Oh my. As much as I don’t agree with mr. Fico’s pro-Russian politics, I definitely wouldn’t want to give him any extra sympathies.

Which is sure to happen, because I hope he survives the attempt on his life.

This is also perfect for radicalising the far right among his supporters. Show them a threat and they’ll organise street patrols ”to keep the peace”.

It’s the perfect storm, really. Really wish this didn’t happen!

This week I've definitely felt angry about the feeling of "nobody reads my shit anymore".

It's probably just a feeling, but it feels like I used to have reach, especially when discussing academic topics, that is now long gone.

Feels like but of course it could just be that I was talking about more engaging topics back then.

Why if nobody reads it? Definitely wondering about that.

Do you REALLY want to get a feel for how GPT-4o does what it does? Just complete this poem — by doing so, you’ll have performed a computation similar to the one it does when you feed it a text-plus-image prompt.

https://www.globalnerdy.com/2024/05/15/the-simplest-way-to-illustrate-how-gpt-4o-works/

gimulnautti,
@gimulnautti@mastodon.green avatar

@AccordionGuy No. You haven’t.

The computation you perform is embedded with a billion years of evolution of pack animals, three brain layers mixing complex survival instincts and the capacity for cultural evolution.

Your process includes responsibility and most importantly, a grasp for societal consequences. Nothing even close to this happens for ’s.

I understand you wish to make it simple and help people. But machine and human computation aren’t the same.

Not sure how I feel about the whole and in music situation.

Why make machines that do the things we enjoy? Why not make machines that clean the toilets at music festivals? I’m guessing most people wouldn’t be hugely disappointed if the job disappeared to !

Anyway, if in doubt play the piano. 🎹

@charlienorth @jneno I second that.

And it would be okay if the people who provided the the training data got a cut.

It would be technically possible. Not 100% accuracy, but with enough accuracy to make a difference.

It’s easy to think from the top of the foodchain that industrial revolution was wonderful.

But it wasn’t for the people who lived it.

Four generations of folks had to endure severely decraded living standards before it got better..

Morally ok?

@GregDance What’s important about natter is that it makes it harder for us to identify when we are interacting with a machine.

This is why we need legislation that demands us to stay informed about the non-humanity of our interactions at all times.

We assume our outputs will matter and change minds. Our democratic societies are founded on that presupposition.

Take that away, I don’t even know what will happen.

And to my fellas, i’m pretty sure ’s industry is basically jizzing their pants over what they can do with OpenAI’s services, jailbroken or not.

Putler will pay them top dollar, not rubles, if they can poison the well of US and European societies.

They don’t even need propaganda, all they need is: ”it’ll cost too much”, ”russia is too strong”, ”it’s the global elite”, ”it’s the left” or ”it’s the jews”.

That’s all it takes if you can compensate for it in volume.

Good luck with having a giant megacorporation as your friend.

Good luck getting your freedom back after you made it accessable only for those who pay.

Good luck after handing over the reins of society to organisations that weren’t democratically elected.

Good luck for the big companies abroad, no longer backed by a strong government & subsidies, overrun by China.

Good luck & godspeed with that, libertarian boy.

Remember all the times Elon Musk said Tesla is so amazing for the environment? The company is being sued for violating the Clean Air Act hundreds of times in recent years by emitting harmful pollutants from its Fremont factory into nearby neighborhoods.

@eagerpebble @parismarx Indeed.

Elon Musk was always about power. Environmentalism was just something he saw could be exploited for that aim.

A lot of people let him off the hook for too many times, ”because he was doing a good thing.”

We got here because people wanted a strong leader, then worshipped him instead of what he did.

This is how we got here. Wishfull thinking and cults of personality.

It would seem that Tesla’s cavalier handling of sensitive customer data breaches the EU Data Governance Act of 11th January 2024.

is now at peak -industrial capacity, practically zero unemployment, pay hikes because not enough labour force to man the weapons factories. 35% of government spending go to military. 7.1% of GDP. All of it to go up in smoke in

However, if we look at the numbers, this output only matches current EU military spending. Countries which are on avg spending less than 2% on it currently.

Tell me again how Ukraine supported only by Europe can’t possibly win?

gimulnautti,
@gimulnautti@mastodon.green avatar

@fnord99 There there my little , RU has a history of failing economically when it puts all it’s efforts on weapon production, and that can happen now.

It’s not false RU currently has headway in production, but their military gains even with 5 times advantage have been meager.

The west needs to help Ukraine weather the storm of this summer & winter and keep ramping up production.

Europe does not want an imperial Russia. We will fight it, with or without you.

gimulnautti, (edited )
@gimulnautti@mastodon.green avatar

@fnord99 Eventually, Russia’s economy will not be able to compete. It’s just too badly managed and too corrupt. For the coming 18 months though, it will likely be stable.

So if that’s too long for you and you’d rather be afraid of big bad russia, go ahead, keep licking boots there. Your choice.

gimulnautti,
@gimulnautti@mastodon.green avatar

@anttipeltola Yes it’s easy for an autocratic country that keeps most of the population poor enough to not be able to afford indoor toilets to do that.

It’s especially easy for countries like that to ramp up production quickly, much faster than market economies of welfare states.

This is not news. This is basic knowledge of facts.

Also. Basic knowledge of history shows that autocratic states eventually lose to the higher industrial output of market economies once they catch up.
