Does anyone remember the open web, and how Google Chrome captured it?

Google is now de facto dictating browser functionality.

is now part of the standards group. 🤔

🔥 This is fine.🔥

Mastodon/fedi are just fine, awesome in fact.

What makes this so is the culture, a hard to define and fragile thing, but everyone here recognises it because we've all seen and many have used other platforms.

Growing organically, at "interpersonal speed" is a strength not a weakness. It allows us to grow without the culture being overrun by an influx from other cultures.

We can respond in real time to a steady influx.

millions at once, what chance our precious culture will survive?

Are "hard links" important or a nice to have in a filesystem?

I'm trying to assess possible feature compromises for a / based that can be mounted on multiple machines, so any views on the usefulness of hard links with examples would be appreciated.

One such compromise here is merging of changes made from different devices, that will be much harder with hard linking.

How important are hard links to you and why?

Just tidying up to do now I've an updated DIY .

I wonder if it is of use to anyone else?

The idea is to use basic hosting or a cloud instance to keep your own machines up to date with each others' IP address when they don't have fixed IPs.

It works [cough] using an FTP server, or if you have a VPS uses ssh/scp. Each machine's local hosts file is kept updated with the IP each machine saves on the server.

It 'works' but FTP servers vary, hence extending it to use a VPS if you have it

I really dislike the shrinking elephant as the edit box expands while I'm composing a toot. It's very distracting for me and I would love to be able to turn it off. It is present on fosstodo.org but not mastodon.social even though both claim to be v4.2.0 🤔

@happyborg@fosstodon.org avatar

Freedom requires no-lock in, which is why we self host domains, don't we? Rather than building on somebody else's domain. Oh, you use Gmail. Still?! 🤦‍♂️

Our desire for ease in a difficult world is what betrays us.

So freedom requires we make the following easy to obtain:

has privacy and autonomy baked in, and levels the playing field for users and developers.

But if developers ignore interoperability corporations can still abuse lock-in.

Chrome privacy question.

If you have it installed as all phones are forced to, is it necessary to use to suffer from its abuse, or does it do evil in the background regardless?

If your project is , or , you are now probably one of the bad guys.

If you don't know why this is bad:

Same for contributing to projects with permissive licensing.

As copyright owner of a project you can be a good guy again: switch to

Also stop contributing to other projects that won't switch, after politely explaining why you have a problem with their .

And avoid using those projects when you can.

User: make a list of things I might find you useful for

Llama: Sure, I'd be happy to help you with that. Please provide me with a list of things or tasks you would like assistance with and we can work together on them.

It took nearly a minute of hammering my eight CPU cores to come up with that. 🤷‍♂️

I think we're safe from for the foreseeable. Don't listen to twerps like who is just shilling.

sucks so much I can't use it as my primary browser on , or . (Sucks means crashes and locks up my devices when handling lots of tabs, which is how I work).

What sucks even more is that it's the only viable candidate that isn't based.

Even worse, is using this monopoly to impose an ever more enclosed, centralised and oppressive web. 😱

Firefox used to do the job but went bad, got a bit better, but is now useless.

What if there was a truly network where running a node was possible on a mobile or any device, and doing so would earn you anonymous encrypted storage on that same network forever?

Secure, anonymous storage for anyone with an internet connection. No gatekeepers, just you and a global network of nodes running on almost any connected device.

We're testing it right now...

Just your everyday mathematical proof that instead of exploding towards infinity, an infinite series such as 1+2+3... converges to... wait for it -1/12

Anyone else watched this and found it both hard to believe and convincing? Massive implications if true.

I've not done a search on this yet but it's worth a watch first even if it's wrong.

How to find out why an app is not compatible?

A banking app on my Android 11 phone started saying after June it would stop working.

After that I uninstalled to try and fix the issue but since then says the app is not compatible, even though the bank's website says it works with v5 and above.

I've since looked at two other banking apps and Google Play says neither is compatible with my 1 phone.

There's no way to find out why or if a different phone will work.

Starting to think about a social media protocol that doesn't fall foul of the UK's ridiculously broad , and leaves what you see in your own hands.

Feed curation as active or effortless as you like, using whatever approach you choose.

So a protocol that provides the basis for user respecting apps with different approaches.

Goal: curation with zero effort via support for 'algos' that serve you rather than the other way around.

Use a personal / ?

Once you realise that is the source of all the existential threats faced by humans... 🤷‍♂️

It means that almost everything is part of that threat. Every corporation, every lobbyist, every politician with very few exceptions, and everyone who hasn't recognised this yet.

Before long I expect it to be dangerous to say that, unless of course it is a futile thing to think.

Calling web gurus.

I'm using the crate to call two different APIs. One is working fine, the other I had working intermittently but not sure what fixed/unfixed it.

The issue is that the await doesn't return even though using curl works fine.

Why would await not return after a few seconds when the curl request returns immediately?
