Well well well

"A handful of powerful businessmen pushed New York City Mayor Eric Adams to use police to crack down on pro-Palestinian student protesters at #Columbia University, donating to the politician and offering to pay for private investigators to help break up the demonstrations, based on leaked WhatsApp conversations"

Sigh.

So look.

The "press" and the "media" are not the problem people. That so many of you think this is by design.

The press and the media are supposed to be the 4th estate.

The watchdogs of government.

The intelligence wing of the people.

Corporate media is a problem, yes, but the press as an institution are not.

But because so many people remain ignorant to the role of the press, I've no doubt that we will be without them in total sooner rather than later.

@Adam_Cadmon1 There's something going on where too many people here have essentially a superiority complex and it leads to weird judgments & contrarian takes that are not fully thought out. IMO.

People shaming others to vote and saying we mustn't say anything bad about Biden/DNC makes more sense when they reveal that they think the problem is the voters, not the very, very rigged system we are forced to submit to

Did I share this here earlier? Over 1300 Jewish faculty urged against turning "Antisemitism Awareness Act" into US law

"Criticism of the state of , the Israeli government, policies of the Israeli government, or Zionist ideology is not – in and of itself – antisemitic. We accordingly urge our political leaders to reject any effort to codify into federal law a definition of that conflates antisemitism with criticism of the state of Israel"

Yall as someone who is striking and generally existing on a campus that is crawling with roughly one security guard per picketer from no fewer than 5 private security companies, if they even slightly change the laws so that private security get some form of qualified immunity or ability to use any amount of force we are totally fucked.

@jonny They are all over my campus too. ANd it must cost a fortune. Disgusting. They have given me the weird surveilling stink eye, and thye followed a colleague to his car.

Thanks for the updates, stay safe out there.

While I myself might not agree with everything student protesters choose to do, I find a certain genre of handwringing about their (not centralized/top-down) choices quite tiresome. If only demands could be expressed sufficiently moderately, then they'd really succeed! 🥱

Really loving seeing several different models for safer conferencing pop up on here in the past week. Good job, Mastodonians! 😷❤️

Oh and here's the accessibility policy for mine that ended last week. (We learned the hard way we should have sent a masking reminder immediately before the first full day of conferencing--but one went out and people honored the policy much better after receiving reminder)

This is a very good piece by a colleague accusing university presidents of lying, in their own narrow self-interest, about what's happening on campuses. Their craven behavior barely protects them and makes everyone else far less safe. Including Muslim and Jewish students, faculty, and staff.

One of the reasons I will believe just about any story of cop bad behavior is that the ones I don't know firsthand tend to be cut from the same cloth as the ones I do know at close range

A very trivial example is a story from a friend who was a public defender in Philly who had a client, who was denying the charge. His alibi was that he was smoking crack with on-duty cops at the time, and he'd admit the wrongdoing if he had done it. She was like, ok but we can't use this in court.

Been adding more to teaching & this piece caught my eye. However not sure when I'll be able to read, seems like such a gut-punch:

"intergenerational relationships & shaped by global & aging. I reflect on the dynamics of my relationship with my mother, beginning with my departure from my home & spanning a period of 40 years. I contemplate theoretical models of intergenerational solidarity, ambivalence, & role ambiguity..."

I have loads and loads of receipts of the account starting shit with me/in my replies. ETA, here's one from mid-April; it's on me to have forgotten to block him in that moment. But I was kinda preoccupied.

(The post at the very top was mine, about university canceling valedictorian's speech; RM then appears in replies to fight about something the valedictorian linked to but did not say. I do stand by my objections to assholes shitting up my mentions, irrespective of class, creed, religion)
