My periodic reminder that if someone makes something you love - art, writing, a podcast, whatever - you should let them know.

You may be the only person who does, and it may make all the difference.

Feeling really sad after hearing people don't feel welcome here 😞 ..

WE ARE OPEN AND SAFE FOR EVERYONE!

(Edited)

inarticulatequilter,

@mitexleo stop asking Black people to do the work for you! In the last 48 hrs without any effort, I’ve seen posts come across my feed advocating for QTs, easier onboarding, less CW policing and the ability to crowdfund without being harassed — just a few of the issues that were they addressed would make Black users safer on here. You don’t need to keep asking Black people to tell you what they need, you just need to, as I said earlier, listen and advocate

kittyboy77,

@mitexleo Most instances are run by white people who consistently refuse to listen to people of colour about what constitutes racist behaviour. So while they will not tolerate glaringly obvious things they acknowledge are racist, they will rally around and defend anyone who gets pushback for things they don't feel count

inarticulatequilter,

@mitexleo we’re all at a different places in the journey and there’s more out there for everyone to learn, but I’m glad this seemed helpful. Warm wishes

@mitexleo I can’t speak for the black community, but I can tell you my experiences here as a Muslim. Most instances don’t really pay much attention their their server rules. It’s a copy and paste thing. Unless it’s transphobic in nature, bullying goes largely unnoticed.

When I reported folks for racism, bigotry, and islamophobia, admins came back and told me that I was the problem.

You understand, right?

Bluesky is funded and developed and operated by THE EXACT SAME PEOPLE who sold your most recent community.

It is the product of exploitative capitalist long-termers who will sell your next community as rapidly and disdainfully as they did your last one, because THEIR INTEREST IN COMMUNITY IS IN EXTRACTING ITS VALUE.

Fedi's hard, sure. And it's not any safer, agreed.

But at least it's not made to benefit the very people who screwed us LESS THAN SIX MONTHS AGO.

mitexleo,

@allenholub @GeePawHill "Social Media" should be a means of communication and interaction between humans. Not a business!

Also take a look at T2's privacy policy and t&c.. Most Importantly it's closed source for profit platform.

Social Media should be Community instead of Competition. 😉

Thankfully the Fediverse exist and we all have the Chance and Opportunity to make it into a friendly of Community.

Not into the next big new Thing to sell out to the highest Bidder, after a few grinded on the Mass of the weak to satisfy there greed. 🙄

「 Cambridge Analytica remains the best lesson in what can happen if companies cut corners when it comes to data protection, says Wiewiórowski. The company, which became one of Facebook’s biggest publicity scandals, had scraped the personal data of tens of millions of Americans from their Facebook accounts in an attempt to influence how they voted. It’s only a matter of time until we see another scandal, he adds 」

Tech problems are fundamentally people problems.

Don't hide behind the algorithm and the protocol when people aren't being treated well. Conway's Law exposes that the algorithm and protocol are a product of the people, communications, and intentions that built them.

If people are telling us they don't feel welcome here, then we need to listen and be open to changing that. If we don't, how can we claim the tech behind our social media is worthy?

You can complain about onboarding and UX all day, but the one big sell of Mastodon for me is that it’s not a big sell: it is non-commercial, non-profit, ad free and doesn’t fck off your data to some marketing ahole.

@mitexleo The trackers here include things from ads and analytics. We do not add anything unnecessary.

You can opt for the premium subscription to get rid of the ads on both IF and It's FOSS News (need to be logged in with the pro subscription)

Regarding multiple analytics – we might have added extra ones to experiment temporarily.

I was thinking earlier that it would be pretty cool to have an -powered app that uses something like the old feature that, in turn, supports post formats that other services use.

For example, the app can post regular posts like this one, structured link posts that work with services like , galleries through @pixelfed and videos through .

Unless automatically reformats posts based on what they contain when a user of services like these receives them in their feeds? I'm not sure how this works under the metaphorical hood. 🤔

paul,
@paul@digitalstuntfactory.com avatar

@pfefferle Are you saying that the plugin supports post formats so you could share a video post to , a gallery post to @pixelfed, and so on, for example?

Meta’s ActivityPub-enabled Twitter competitor is moving ahead.

    The project is called “Barcelona”.

It will be its own independent app, and it’s being pitched as “Instagram for your thoughts”.

How do you feel about Meta joining the Fediverse?

    Here’s a screenshot of Barcelona.

@mitexleo Thanks! Just to clarify this further, just because the app knows something locally does not mean that Proton knows it or logs it.

Our no logs policy has been fully audited, and you can see Securitum's audit here: https://protonvpn.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/securitum-protonvpn-nologs-20220330.pdf

Also, the wording in the report you've referenced is a bit misleading, since it's referring to config files, rather than logs.

We hope this helps alleviate your concerns.
