When we used to make mouse trap cars in school I had a friend who loved to set up a chain of traps so when you set off the first one they each set another of in a satisfying sequence of snaps.

No idea what made me remember that… anyway seems like the Georgia case is going well, don’t you agree?

hello fediverse, here's my new infographic comparing two dynamics we can nurture when doing things: security theater vs.

it's meant as a handy reference to validate that your org's security efforts are nurturing resilience rather than fomenting theater (and I don't mean writing your design docs in iambic pentameter, that's fine)

imo security theater is one of the core pillars holding up the status quo of security-as-gatekeeper... so let's do resilience instead <3

    The fog of war is bad, ya'll and the fake videos are getting better. If you see something ... intense, upsetting, something that gives you an emotional reaction and either solidifies your views or makes you question them... hit pause.

    I don't care how media savvy you are.

    Especially if it's something that confirms your worst fears. Especially that one.

    Hit pause. Check the sources. Check them direct from the source site, don't trust thumbnails, or watermarks.

    @futurebird The part about omission resonates with me especially.

    The few times in my life I’ve read or watched news coverage about something I was already intimately familiar with, there have always been misconceptions and omissions but not outright lies. In each case it seemed like the reporter was legitimately trying to do a good job but came to the table with biases (especially establishment bias) and not enough time.

    "Loophole" comes from the slits archers used in castle walls, which in Middle English were called loops but have no etymological relationship to the loop that is a circle of string, thread, etc.

    At first they were just loops, but they became loopholes so people could make it clear they were talking about castle loops and not thread loops.

    It took on the "escape route" meaning in the mid-1600s.

    "Anxious" and "eager" have different meanings but are often confused. Plus, attitudes about these two words are changing, so it's important to be careful. https://www.quickanddirtytips.com/articles/anxious-or-eager/

    mkb,
    @mkb@mastodon.social avatar

    @grammargirl Interesting! When anticipation is the context, I (perhaps incorrectly) take the anxious/eager distinction as a matter of degreee. That is “I am eager for X to happen” means the speaker is excited about and looking forward to X while “I am anxious for X to happen” means the speaker is very eager to the point of being fretful about it.

    It hadn’t actually occurred to me that people might be using anxious incorrectly. I am now eager to observe people’s uses of “anxious.” :)

    Are there any fans in the house?

    There’s a little stutter in the main riff of “Deuce.” After decades of listening to that album on the regular I still can’t tell whether the rhythm is intentional or they didn’t quite have the chops to play what they intended.

    onan, to random

    Young men mark out their territory. Later, they see some of that territory wasn't worth marking out, and the way they marked it out wasn't successful.

    Bravado over liking the cool bands is an example, and I did it, then I stopped doing it.

    I knew a guy who knew a guy whose father was a music promoter. His friend said hey, my dad is having The Beatles over for dinner, they're doing a show in the states, do you want to come over? The guy I knew said no, I'm a Stones man.

    mkb,
    @mkb@mastodon.social avatar

    @onan And by extention, it points out the ridiculousness of the idea that if you like Foo you must dislike Bar. Cats vs dogs, Star Wars vs Star Trek, etc. are silly lines to draw. We can like both, or neither.

    Because of his willingness to play for segregated audiences, throughout much of his life, Louis Armstrong was called a sellout and an Uncle Tom by many Black Americans, But, in 1957, Satchmo blew up-—blasting Eisenhower to bits for not condemning treatment of Black American students in the South. His passionate words made world headlines, alienated many white fans, and divided Black America.

    There is no benefit to anyone on the left being on twitter.

    Nina Turner tweeted "Insulin should be free." some libertarians responded "Nina should pick cotton for free."

    Did this obvious racism hurt them? No, they now have more followers than ever. Being over there is just being bait for these extremists to build their network.

    Grotesque racist images of Nina, rather than being demoted by the algorithm are being promoted since the people posting them paid for blue checks.

    Billy Idol releases his debut, self-titled solo album, “Billy Idol”

    As his first band, “Generation X”, began to see less commercial success, producer Bill Aucoin (managed Kiss through most of the 1970s) helped push Billy Idol to become a solo act.

    This debut album has a lot of great tunes, and several that charted. “Hot In The City”, “Dancing With Myself”, and my personal favorite, “White Wedding”. I have a fond memory of watching the video for White Wedding on MTV, as part of my intro to “new wave” music.

    UPDATE:

    Zoom Video and Zoom Info are TWO DIFFERENT companies. Sorry everyone.

    Still not a bad idea to get out of their database however.

    This is Zoom's privacy policy. It is an amazing piece of legal engineering granting them the rights to buy, sell, and gather just about any data about business users they want -- including listing you in a Business or Professional Profile (the "directory"):

    <https://www.zoominfo.com/about-zoominfo/privacy-policy>

    This is their form to opt-out of all tracking in their database which they use to sell your information to 3rd parties. Somewhat ironically, this page won't work unless you turn-off Privacy Badger and Ghostery web browser plug-ins:

    <https://www.zoominfo.com/privacy-center/update/remove>

    If you use Zoom at work through a business account and don't wish to be listed, consider opting out. They are also collecting information from around the Web outside of Zoom apparently to help build out your profile.
