Folks promoting Bluesky on the fediverse is like the three little pigs doing public relations for the big bad wolf.

But, hey, clearly some folks still haven’t gotten the message that VC and billionaires are bad and that non-corporate spaces have to be protected from corporate ones.

I guess something has to keep the folks who write “what went wrong/if only we’d known” articles in business.

🤷‍♂️

🚨 Another EU mass surveillance attempt. Will kill privacy on web. Must not pass. 🚨

“[A]ll web browsers distributed in Europe will be required to trust the certificate authorities and cryptographic keys selected by EU governments.

These changes radically expand the capability of EU governments to surveil their citizens by ensuring cryptographic keys under government control can be used to intercept encrypted web traffic across the EU.”

Egypt opens Rafah border crossing for foreigners from Gaza

In addition, several ambulances went to Gaza from the Egyptian side to transport the seriously wounded from hospitals to Egypt.

But what about the ordinary Palestinians? Does Egypt cares about their lives?

P.S. Israel now works with Egypt to open the border for millions of Palestinian refugees.
Also there are talks that peacekeepers from many of the countries will be deployed to Gaza after the Hamas regime fall.

Just so proud of Mastodon today.

These times are very challenging. Rather than descend into an abyss of fake news and stident acrimony, somehow Mastodon seems to be largely maintaining a civil tone and self regulating misinformation.

It is pretty amazing to see an open social media community functioning this well given the meltdown across other platforms.

Let's continue to demand accuracy and civility while we debate these seminal issues. Let Mastodon be the beacon in the darkness.

murb, (edited )
@murb@todon.nl avatar

@SebastienK @mastodonmigration also the replies you see are only the replies from users that are on your instance or followed by someone on the instance you’re on (if I’m not mistaken), or posts that ended up because the sender tagged users on your instance. So even if there is a troll responding the OP, if nobody follows that troll on your instance (and why would they) you as a lurker probably won’t see it, making it much harder to have troll material amplified. So it is a two layer filtering/curation :) perhaps even a third layer, as the admin can decide to actively ban the troll’s instance messaging even when someone wanted to follow this troll.

Sidenote: I’m afraid that is also why white people (like me) hardly see racism here, since they aren’t tagged in replies to PoC posts and if you’re part of a sensible mastodon community the racists themselves aren’t followed by anyone, only if you'd share the instance with the person attacked you'd see the reply in your environment.

I wrote a blog post about writing Object Shape friendly Ruby code.

tl;dr: declare all your @ivars in , and stop doing the return @ivar if defined?(@ivar) memoization pattern.

https://island94.org/2023/10/writing-object-shape-friendly-code-in-ruby

murb,
@murb@todon.nl avatar

@bensheldon @tenderlove while interesting to learn more about object shapes, is this really good advise? As in, this sounds like something that needs to be fixed on the Ruby interpreter side? while perhaps people working on it might be scratching their heads on how to do that properly, it seems to me like a bad practice in general to write more lines of code / reinventing null, because the interpreter isn’t smart enough? Especially with a language like Ruby which is meant to give developer happiness, pushing rigid structures of code kinda breaks that Ruby promise… I’ve seen articles like these in JS-land and they’ve not aged very well.

Since I've seen a lot of chatter about people switching to as Google ramps up the enshitification of , let me tell you about a killer feature for people who (a) need multiple accounts on the same websites (eg. devs) or specifically (b) have to use multiple Google accounts.

Firefox has an official addon called Multi Account Containers that lets you trivially set up color coded tabs that have separate sets of cookies. Log into your dev account in one, and your test account in another. Log into your personal in one and have another tab next to it with your work Gmail. I'm actually not signed in to any Google accounts in most my tabs, I just have containers for the specific tasks I do on Google products.

It'll take you 30 seconds to set up.

Add-on: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/

Mozilla's explanation: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/containers

With the upcoming #meta #Project92 Fediverse service, there has been a, well, robust discussion of how to avoid threats looming. Those advocating mass-preemptive defederation make three cases for it.

➡️ To avoid data mining ...which Defederation does virtually zero to avoid any big tech entity scraping all the fedi public social graph today - Want proof?

@oceaniceternity @tchambers @emc2 @davew maybe the core web technologies are story. HTML/CSS were dominated by Internet Explorer. Even setting new standards. But enough people fought back, the standards were better drafted and we still have this largely open web based on these core technologies. ActiveX never won. Java applets neither. Flash, gone. XMLhttprequests were standardised, and now we have fetch, ES6, wasm. Chromium (Google & Microsoft) are def in a position of power, but the industry is still catering to other rendering engines.
