The rush to judgment articles and posts I saw yesterday are just aging like warm milk. Preliminary reports are already showing:

  • The IDF targeted two senior Hamas terrorists it had tracked by aerial surveillance to a Hamas compound in Rafah

  • The IDF confirmed no women or children were in the compound before striking

  • The strike took place more than a mile (1.7 km) outside the Al-Mawasi designated humanitarian zone and more than 0.1 miles (180 meters) from the shelters that caught fire

  • The strike was carried out using 17 kg (37 lb) warheads — the smallest munition IDF jets can use; the IDF munitions alone could not have ignited such a large fire

  • The IDF is continuing to investigate the cause of the fire, including the possibility that Hamas had stored weapons in the area that the IDF was not aware of and which exploded due to the strike

  • satellite photos there was at least one Hamas rocket launcher near the compound that was bombed, which was outside the designated humanitarian zone.

@Bam far to many people expect immediate clarity to emerge from the fog of war, and are all too ready to blame Israel for anything and everything when it doesn’t

@GottaLaff not that anyone is going to change their mind about Trump, but how many of Trump’s MAGA gun nutjobs have stuck a pistol in their pants and stood reciting De Niro’s lines from Taxi Driver in front of a mirror? Seems likely to be a lot.

Here’s an excellent article about important lawsuits just filed on behalf of Uvalde families who lost loved ones to a mass shooting there. The families, represented by the same attorney who represented the Sandy Hook families, are suing Daniel Defense, the maker of the AR-15 used by the shooter, as well as the publisher of Call of Duty video games and Meta. (I am quoted in the story.) https://wapo.st/3R1Y9LA

mwyman,
@mwyman@mastodon.social avatar

@heidilifeldman thanks for your summary of the filing. The video game component seems fairly tenuous, however, and wondering if that’s the case in the actual claim? I’m rather skeptical of claims about video games triggering violence, compared to the actual selling and marketing weapons of slaughter.

Wizardry 6: Bane of the Cosmic Forge was the first RPG I ever played, and I was obsessed despite being unable to escape the first few floors of the dungeon. I used to read the hint book like a novel.

I completed parts 7 and 8, and that trilogy is one of my all time favorites.

The first game was a bit too primitive and before my time, so I am elated at a quality-of-life graphical remake built on top of the original engine. I hope they do 2-5.

Working (who am i kidding, playing) with a film camera again has made me really appreciate just how OP modern digital cameras are.

I literally cannot do things with this film camera that I take for granted on my Zf. Need to shoot wide open, in super bright sunlight? Not a problem.

Oh wait I only have 400 film and the fastest shutter is 1/2000… Nevermind…

(Auto-)ISO anywhere between 50-204800 is just nuts in comparison (and a shutter speed of 8000…)

mwyman,
@mwyman@mastodon.social avatar

@schwa my film experience was with a family heirloom Rolleiflex, and one time I was playing with high-ISO black and white (Ilford 3200). Only twelve shots on the 120 film, but basically put the camera away during daylight hours while that roll was loaded.

@jeffjarvis I still think there’s an element in the administration’s calculations where people were just exhausted from the prior administration where Trump had to be front and center always, and the press got used to that and can’t cope with that not being the case now.

So the EU is telling Meta to give away Facebook without making money. If Facebook is so vital, maybe the same rule should be made for newspapers, eh? Senseless.
Meta should give users free option without targeted ads, EU privacy watchdog says https://www.reuters.com/technology/meta-should-give-users-free-option-without-targeted-ads-eu-privacy-watchdog-says-2024-04-17/

mwyman,
@mwyman@mastodon.social avatar

@jeffjarvis targeted ads get much higher return than contextual ads, so essentially yes. EU seems to have demanded Meta give a free option without targeted ads, basically demanding Meta collect much lower revenue per user. I’m not sure why anyone expects Meta to just roll over and accept that.
