Sony lays off people, and I'm not surprised. "Spider-Man 2" budget was 315 million dollars, and it wasn't a big leap from its predecessor.
AAA games have become unsustainable. I don't want to wait 20 years for the next Elder Scrolls only for it to eat a massive budget, forcing the developers to monetize it as much as possible.
I hope that these layoffs spark a new gen of game devs who are fed up with MBAs managing game studios and are to return to the roots.
Small thing I discovered after looking for a PIP Video Extension for Safari. Just do a right click when you play a Video in Safari to enter PIP Mode. #safari#macos
In Deutschland sind mehr als 50% der Überstunden unbezahlt. Zum Glück will die CDU nun keine Steuern darauf, weil Leistung sich wieder lohnen soll. #cdu#deutschland
I really don’t understand why people who oppose fascism are still on Twitter. Why do you support this platform by providing content and traction?
For the context. Martin Sellner is a known nazi in the DACH region. He’s currently promoting his book, in which he describes how to get rid of immigrants regardless of their nationality. #twitter#elonmusk#fascism
I want to recreate a poster of the original Star Trek Tricorder based on the blueprints released in the '70s. So far, I've got this, but I'm not happy with the fonts I found online.
Does anyone have a better one that matches the original more closely?
When I'm done, I will release the source files for everyone else. I could image doing more of these posters.
The amazing thing about LLMs is how much knowledge they posess in their small size. The llama3-8b model, for instance, weighs only 4.7GB yet can still answer your questions about everything (despite some hallucinations). #llm#ai#ollama#llama3
SoundCloud has just killed the Client ID of DaftCloud. Do they follow the model that Twitter and Reddit chose to adopt? It really saddens me, but I knew it would eventually happen. It's still sad to see it dying without any communication on their part.
It’s a breath of fresh air after years of Apple’s super-highly-polished WWDC ones.
Specifically: people falter naturally like real humans giving talks, multiple companies involved showing some industry collaboration. Something that’s just not present at WWDC re: Swift.
@dave It's actually a really interesting observation. Apple alienated so much the developers these days with their corporate politics (the people that made the iPhone great in the first place).
It's far from authenticity and it doesn't feel human anymore. All these things that attracted and inspired devs in the first place and now these devs start to look somewhere else now…
People often ask me, if DaftCloud is written in SwiftUI. Nope, it's AppKit with some weird design pattern. Most screens are just CollectionViews with DiffableDataSource which gets Diffed / Redrawn on State Updates.
I love SwiftUI on the iOS, but I heard that it's still not ready for macOS (after 4 years?)
Okay, I'm leveling up my hipster audio experience. After 20 years, my Sennheiser 595s are breaking apart. Which headphones can you recommend? #audiophile#headphones#vinyl
People say that the sound quality in Apple Music is way better than in Spotify. What is the technical explanation here?
It can't be a problem of the encoding pipeline. This problem has been solved decades ago. #spotify#applemusic#soundquality#audiophile#music#opus#aac#vorbis
@nighthawk Might be a good explanation, but would this not mostly apply to older music that got remastered or what's the difference between a normal master and an Apple digital master?
I really get the feeling that AAA games are dying.
Layoffs everywhere, huge budgets, too big to fail; indie devs are eating their lunch and ex-McKinsey MBAs are leading the Xbox division into their disaster. It was cool while it lasted… but maybe its a good thing.
I wonder why Valve is not laying off people. Maybe it's because they understand gamers and keep career-centric managers out?
