Double whammy for : Carpenter bee with mites.

Close-up of a black carpenter bee, viewed from above on violet petals of a wisteria. Blurred, green foliage in the background. The bee's wings shine in an iridescent blue. Between its body segments is a patch of several white mites sticking to it.

Anyone on here hosting at home or in a SOHO?
I'm looking for recommendations to run a low power consumption server, mostly for files, maybe for Jitsi and OnlyOffice, too.

What are you running?
What would you do differently if you were to buy a Nextcloud server now?

Just been for an after dinner wander with MrsD. Saw two "naked" geckos, Jupiter, the moon upside down, a Star Link and a Chinese satellite. How did I know the facts about the satellites? I have Stellarium on my phone. Very useful.

Well, some photos, then!

No service that is part of he should offer completely open registrations.

To me, the can only become a True New Way when it is built on trust. And instances that allow completely unchecked account creation undermine that trust as they enable (or IMHO attract) abuse. See the last spam wave that worked by finding small instances with open registration to create accounts that started spewing spam immediately.

(Extended and clarified my argument)

oraculix,
@oraculix@ieji.de avatar

@deadsuperhero @jwildeboer From my personal experience: When I joined Mastodon,I deliberately chose an instance with the least set of restrictions or rules, among other criteria.
Looking at the recent bot and spam waves, however, I can fully understand admins requiring an introductory text before considering to approve your account.
I just wouldn't want to see this mandatory for every instance and leave this decision up to the admins.

Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time" was published #OTD in 1988.

I read it a few months later, excitedly underlining and starring passages that wowed me, and spent the summer daydreaming about big bangs and black holes.

@me Welcome, enjoy the Fediverse and enjoy cultivating your little space in it!

ErikUden, to random
@ErikUden@mastodon.de avatar

There's no “content” on the Fediverse. There's stories, articles, greetings, friends, and humans. Contentification of human creativity is what algorithm-based platforms drove us to do. Content to distract, void of meaning or a soul, but filled with sponsorships and monetary incentive.

The Fediverse is unique as it has meaning first, medium second. We say things not for the sake of saying something to please some algorithm or audience, but because we think it's something someone needs to hear, or we simply wish to say. Once you've become accustomed to this way of digital interaction, liberalize your creativity from the shackles of corporate interests and marketability, there's no way back. The only thing I wish is to give people, our generation that knows no alternative, that same feeling.

oraculix,
@oraculix@ieji.de avatar

@ahimsa_pdx @ErikUden In the corporate world, "content" is widely used to treat works and communications as a commodity whose purpose is to fill a box and make money.

"Sorry for ruining your Christmas, Wietse" (from Postfix) and something with penetration of the human body with dildos. The first 5 minutes of the talk at does not disappoint. https://streaming.media.ccc.de/37c3/zuse

oraculix,
@oraculix@ieji.de avatar

@jwildeboer An unfortunate decision, to say the least.
It would have been better to deny a presentation before responsible disclosure. And it would have been an even better outcome for all involved, if those who reviewed the submission had mentored the authors towards doing better.

oraculix,
@oraculix@ieji.de avatar

@jwildeboer I absolutely understood your point and subscribe to that.
Nevertheless I think that this issue could have been avoided last minute with a "responsible dismissal" of the talk.

Edit: This is not meant to shift blame.
It is meant to say that if the reviewer(s) of the 37C3 were aware of this issue, they missed a chance to do great community service.

And there’s only one lesson the Swiss ought to give the Germans about rail: INVEST AS MUCH AS THE SWISS.

The Swiss invest - per inhabitant - about 4x as much per year in the rail network as Germany does. Once Germany does that, rail in Germany will improve.

oraculix,
@oraculix@ieji.de avatar

@Christiansurrey @kuketzblog

oraculix,
@oraculix@ieji.de avatar

@islieb

Flinte ==> Korn.

NASA is sending a software update to the Voyager 2 spacecraft today!

The patch contains logic to auto-recover from glitches similar to one in May 2022, when the AACS system on Voyager 1 started sending garbled data. The root cause was not fully diagnosed. The patch will be activated/tested on Oct 28. Voyager 1 will be next.

Data will be sent at 16 bps with a 19 kW transmitter using the 70-m dish at @canberradsn.
Distance: 20 billion km; 18:40 light hours
