The decisions and policy that have the most profound impacts on the greatest number of human lives often aren't the ones talked about most often in political discourse.

What is the biggest difference between life in this era and say... European feudalism?

I would argue it's near universal literacy. And along with simply having access to the written word, the highest percentage of a population armed with some scraps of what you might call a "liberal arts education"

The ability to self-teach.

This is utterly wild... am I a little smooth-brained, or is this totally unrealistic?

  • 200 Mbps compressed to under 1 Mbps
  • Realtime, i.e: ~1ms latency or better
  • Encode and transmit in <10mW (yes, including radio)
  • Lossless
  • High-entropy input

... if you succeed, just email them your solution - no mention of any reward or Nobel Prize nomination.

Don't forget that tomorrow from 10:00-15:00, a bunch of roads around central #London are all closed off to cars, so if you want to go for a lovely ride along the Thames and past St Paul's and all that, it's a great day to do it: https://www.ridelondon.co.uk/our-rides/ridelondon-freecycle

Reminder that this is the same Thames Water who just proposed a 91% increase in standing charges to customers over the next 5 years so that they can repair their shit-spewing network (while still paying the same level of dividends to their shareholders that they paid while allowing their network to decay to the point where this is a problem): https://www.theguardian.com/environment/article/2024/may/25/thames-water-vomiting-bug-cryptosporidium?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other

Today I found out that, as someone that had not previously been on the electoral rolls before moving out of the UK, I can now register to vote as an Overseas British Citizen. THIS IS A CHANGE IN POLICY

I just gotta find the paperwork that proves my last address.

If you're in my same boat (moved before getting on the electoral rolls due to age or circumstance)... https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voting-and-elections/who-can-vote/other-registration-options/voting-if-you-live-overseas is where you can register.

Deadline is 18 June to get registered on the electoral rolls.

One of Apple's design choices around hardware-backed keys stored in the secure enclave is that they can only be used by the app that generated them - so a key generated by (eg) Chrome for WebAuthn purposes can't be used by (eg) Safari. We have a command-line tool for obtaining auth tokens from Okta that has to handle MFA, so the past few weeks have involved me figuring out enough of Okta's MFA enrollment flow to add support to it so users can use TouchID to auth from the CLI.

Their lack of courage is exceeded only by their lack of any kind of morality. They've reduced the UK to a rotting hulk. And now they'll all get six months' severance pay at our expense while they find cosy directorships to settle into.

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

GossiTheDog,
@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social avatar

So the code underpinning Copilot+ Recall includes a whole bunch of Azure AI backend code, which has ended up in the Windows OS. It also has a ton of API hooks for user activity monitoring.

Apps themselves can also search and make themselves more searchable.

It opens a lot of attack surface.

The semantic search element is fun.

They really went all in with this and it will have profound negative implications for the safety of people who use Microsoft Windows.

Like @Quinnypig, I’d love if Google went on the record about what happened with this one.

https://www.unisuper.com.au/contact-us/outage-update

Tl;dr is an entire org got wiped, and they’re trying to suggest it’s some kind of Google Cloud issue as the cause.

Google have issued a blog about the Google Cloud customer they accidentally deleted.

A Google staff member accidentally set a termination date on their account, effectively, which deleted several thousand of their VMs. https://cloud.google.com/blog/products/infrastructure/details-of-google-cloud-gcve-incident
