Okay, so, I've just done a review of the features in both and .

I've written up a fuller report on the IFTAS matrix, but the tl;dr is: if you care about user safety, do not deploy either of these.

They do not feature comprehensive or well built moderation tools, and you will not be able to effectively moderate instances running this software.

You are better off waiting to deploy these once they mature more.

Edit: removed user mentions to stop spamming them.

Edit: 600+ boosts is probably enough! 😅

Do any friends have a company in Germany that could hire a junior web developer at the moment? Either as a junior or intern?

I've a friend based in Berlin, Germany, who's desperately in need of work so she can retain health insurance and stay in the country, after her last internship fell short of 6 months (company failed).

If you know of anything, please reach out!

It always amazes me in how in discussions of the future of services that moderation is generally an afterthought.

Okay, we add nomadic identity, how does that impact the ability for servers to moderate, given all moderation tooling is built on user + server identity?

Okay, we add the ability to put people on lists without following, how does that impact moderation and privacy?

Not sure how I feel about @social's emphasis on AI/ML in the job listings for Mozilla Social — such a heavy emphasis feels counter culture to the fediverse, which generally advocates against AI/ML from what I've seen.

Though I'm also aware that practically everything is needing to employ those buzzwords for funding these days.

What should we call a group of fediverse servers working together in moderation & community practices?

I've been using Bloc in quotes, because I'm not sure if that's the right or most correct word for it.

#moderation #fediverse #TrustAndSafety

In something that may surprise a whole bunch of people, the notion of an "instance" is something of a lie.

Instances don't technically exist: https://www.w3.org/TR/activitypub/#server-to-server-interactions

”But Mastodon also has [...] a lot on its plate including integration with Threads“

It's lines like this that makes me completely unable to take those calling for a hard fork of Mastodon seriously.

All Mastodon do for Threads is the same they for any fediverse developer having issues federating with them. (And there's certainly limits to that)

Along with perhaps writing more FEPs to standardize behaviour, which benefits everyone

Have just opened a pull request to enable OAuth 2.0 refresh tokens for Mastodon, which is a first step towards enabling expiration of access tokens, to increase security to best practices.

That's something I'd love a reporter covering this spam wave to know: Discord is being used to coordinate illegal activity, and discord has no mechanisms for people to report abuse.

abuse@ and support@ emails are dead ends, and their contact form has no "report abuse" option that works. Reporting it via the child safety team also didn't work.

Update: TechCrunch covered it: https://techcrunch.com/2024/02/21/discord-took-no-action-against-server-that-coordinated-costly-mastodon-spam-attacks/

Okay Fediverse, as funding is not happening at the levels necessary to sustain me working full-time on the Fediverse (whether that's on trust & safety or on Mastodon), I'm now looking for part-time or contract positions.

Most recently I worked for Sir Tim Berners-Lee's company Inrupt.

What's something that's brought you joy on the #fediverse recently? Particularly instance admins and moderators?

I feel like this has been a hard week in many regards, so let's share some good things!

I think there's actually a middle ground between Big Fedi and Small Fedi, as mentioned by @evan — perhaps we call it "medium fedi" or "just right fedi"

So according to Germany's STIKO, I don't "need" either a covid 19 nor flu vaccine... but it seems like it'd be very smart to get these?

Is Germany just generally against regular vaccination of it's population?

Hey folks, I'm starting to get concerned that I need to be monitoring my blood pressure regularly, as high blood pressure runs in my family.

Does anyone know of a reasonably priced reliable blood pressure monitor that can feed data into apple health?

Challenge for a UX designer: rethink the UI/UX around content warnings on the Fediverse (mastodon, pixelfed, etc) to allow capturing not just a text field, but also some predefined labels (e.g., 18+, sexual imagery, violent imagery, etc)

Technically these labels would come from "providers" which define what they mean and controls that should be implemented.

I don't hold high hopes on this "node.js documentary" being any good, it is interesting that they seem to only be featuring the men involved in the early days of Node.js, not the women who were there and doing stuff.

e.g., I'm responsible for the documentation being on multiple pages, for websocket support, and for a whole host of other things, but it seems I'll be forgotten in this recruitment firm's version of the history.

I also started the first Node.js podcast.

This honestly doesn't surprise me: Stripe Forbids Sex Work, But Profits From Non-Consensual Porn

If the company can feign enough vagueness then Stripe's practices don't catch sites that go against their ToS. https://www.404media.co/stripe-forbids-sex-work-but-profits-from-non-consensual-porn/

So I've just heard that the big Rewe near me has shutdown, and I'm now wondering where the hell I can go to deposit Pfand?

I know about Pfandgeben, but kinda want the money back on my pfand right now, as money's tight. Local späti's hate taking pfand from me (like special hours for Pfand or just refusing it), is there an app or site to find where to deposit my pfand in and ?

So, for migrating from Chrome to #Firefox, what’s everyone's most loved extension for tab management? Specifically being able to move tabs between windows, save sessions for later, etc.

Think: one browser but used for multiple different research projects and for personal browsing. I currently use Cluster for Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/cluster-window-tab-manage/aadahadfdmiibmdhfmpbeeebejmjnkef

if germany really wanted to do something about this, they'd grant the right to vote to non-citizens who've been tax payers for 3 years or more.

Right now like 10-25% of the population of Germany is under taxation without representation

So how do we all feel about croissants in a can?

Personally I think they're okay, it's nice to have easy fresh baked croissants without having to go to the bakery. Even if they're not the "best" croissants you've ever had.

Plus this baking in the more that's low effort feels like a nice little achievement.

Okay, so, remember how I had some big news? Well, I didn't get to announce it yesterday as I was unwell (I've been unwell most of the month and could really do with extra financial support right now!)

The big news is that my FIRES project has been granted funding by NLNet (@NGIZero) Entrust fund.

What is FIRES? It's a project I've been slowly working since September last year, and provides a server for maintaining and distributing moderation advisories and recommendations.
