This has mostly been reported as "trans women banned from women's chess" but it's much more sinister. (as if it weren't already.)

ALL trans people are targeted by this ruling. Trans men will be stripped of all chess titles won, which can only be returned to them by “changing the gender back to a woman” (from the ICF’s ruling). ALL transgender chess players will be marked as trans in their files.

If you play or know anyone who does take a stand on this. It's ugly.

    @Teri_Kanefield Of course he should get his due process and his day in court. I would not argue for unilateral imprisonment without trial. That's one of the ugly aspects of Trump's presidency which he inflicted on Latino people, often children.

    However, it's entirely likely these cases and indictments are just a prelude to a variety of jail sentences. You'd like to presume innocence until proven guilty- but the evidence is already there. It's already proven.

    trabex,
    @trabex@newsie.social avatar

    @Teri_Kanefield Formally, yes. Let's not imprison anyone without due process. Informally, he did it. The evidence is voluminous. I am not sure what defense a law could present that would exonerate his client. The only option available to him is jury nullification.

    Walked to work this morning listening to this week's 301 Permanently Moved* , in which Jay makes a fascinating point; if accessing the web without any ad blockers is as dreadful as it is, no wonder the majority of general users are perfectly happy to live within social media silos.

    I've used ad blockers for as long as I can remember, so only occasionally get a horrific reminder of what it's really like, raw-dogging the interwebs, and it's not pretty.

    @DJDarren Gosh, you're not kidding. When I access the internet with my phone (no ad blocker) sometimes half the screen is taken up with an unwanted video. Or there will be ads breaking up text I want to read. And it's all stuff I don't care about.

    @cpoliticditto That's the problem, though. Anyone with any amount of intelligence will never get into an insurrection unless they are certain of their victory. The consequences of losing are dire: not only do you not get the control and power you seek, you also become a pariah when the people you tried to overthrow excoriate you for the rest of time.

    Inflation is down to 2.97% but prices are still higher than they should be.

    As we've screamed all along—the leading driver of high prices was not inflation, but corporate price gouging. And corporations fund politicians to prevent accountability. That is the problem we face. (Also one reason I refuse corporate money in my run for US Congress).

    trabex,
    @trabex@newsie.social avatar

    @QasimRashid Landlords play a big role in inflation. Rent goes up, worker asks for more money, business has to charge more for its whatever to afford it, round and round we go.

    Never forget that nearly half of the Pentagon budget goes to private contractors.

    Investigations show these companies make egregious profits overcharging DoD.

    The Senate is now debating an $886 billion defense bill.

    Let’s call it what it is: corporate welfare on steroids.

    trabex,
    @trabex@newsie.social avatar

    @rbreich The really odd thing about spending all this money is that military members are treated like dirt, left to suffer and die, and have to rely on other social services to find housing. Housing should be automatic for veterans for the rest of their lives. None of this jumble of spending almost a trillion dollars on machines while a veteran huddles up into a blanket on a street corner for the night.
