I'm sorry Slack, you're doing fucking WHAT with user DMs, messages, files, etc? I'm positive I'm not reading this correctly.

tyil,

@f4grx @Viss @gsuberland @Quinnypig There never was a private company you could trust for that to begin with. If you want to have any control, you host your own solutions using completely free software.

kthx,

The interface is clunky, and hosting it is ridiculously expensive for large userbases. Consider or instead. Much easier to setup and maintain!

Classic Winamp is going ?

tyil,

@vl1 It only states the source code is going to be available, not that its going to be free software. Those two things are very different, and going by how they're not really giving out much info, I'm inclined to believe it's not going to be free.

Satya Nadella says Windows PCs will have a photographic memory feature called Recall that will remember and understand everything you do on your computer by taking constant screenshots. This is a great reason to ditch windows altogether. Switch to 🧑‍💻 They don’t care about your privacy or safety anymore and not hiding it either. @nixCraft Remember? Maybe. But understanding? That's hopefully a joke.

Saddening me time and again is seeing individualism and fragmentation in .

between projects that's so often low-hanging fruit, yet never happens. More anticipation of needs, helping each other, be stronger together. Yet it hardly shapes up to the extent that it could.

We seem to lack time to become sustainable, let alone 'win' from . No time to seek collab as we prod on alone.

There are exceptions of course, and better collab tools are becoming available.

tyil,

@smallcircles

better collab tools are becoming available

This makes no difference if new projects actively choose to go for proprietary platforms instead, and then make up excuses afterwards as to why this choice is supposedly valid.

The community needs to understand that they need to actually use free software where possible, or collaboration will be never work out.

Das ist nun gerade mit Google Docs passiert.

tyil,

@isotopp It strikes me as incredibly funny that they complain about the unchecked power of a proprietary platform on another proprietary platform. Have you ever considered using software that respects the users to avoid nearly every issue you're having with the current choices?

Just read on a Matrix channel:

As a server engineer, I always start by assuming (nearly) 100% uptime.

This kind of dumb assumptions is why "modern" internet-applications can't handle any kind of interruption which will always happen at some point.

Assume your service is down more often than not, and design around that. Make sure it can handle flaky services, slow connections, and expect "unexpected" hardware issues.

I honestly can't understand how you can call yourself an engineer when you can't even comprehend that things go wrong all the time and you need to anticipate that to create something reliable.

Ugh. Pocket Git, another long time favorite Android app of mine, has disappeared from the Play Store—without an obvious replacement.

I don’t want to start developing Android apps, but dang, I could really use replacements for these:

• Straightforward git client (explicitly not an IDE)
• Package tracker that supports multiple carriers

I’ll design them if someone else can develop them? 😝

tyil,

@cassidy Don't rely on a "store" owned by a giant corporate that wants nothing but total and complete control over you and your devices. Don't trust anything by one of those entities, I'd argue.

It looks like Pocket Git is proprietary too, at least I don't see any means to get to its source, so that may have been a big mistake too. Not sure why there's an OpenSource hashtag in your post if it's about proprietary software in a proprietary ecosystem, though.

I do see a huge list of gambling scam sites referred at the bottom of Pocket Git's website, for some reason. I don't think I want to know more about this software or its developer, nor support it in any way further by giving advice...

Seems to work on .> They can convey meaning well

If everyone agrees on the meaning of the picture, sure, but this is not the case. Various emojis can have vastly different meanings to different groups of people. If you're also going to add in custom emojis this is going to be even worse, you're throwing around emojis that are literally undefined by the majority of the world population.

With your example "boosts appreciated", making a hashtag BoostsAppreciated is clear, concise, and accessible to all. I've never even heard of a dedicated emoji for this, and if you suddenly started to use those I'd have to wonder what you're trying to convey, and use the alt-text to actually get anywhere. Seems like more hassle than just using text in the first place.> They can be used in addition to other textual hashtags

This is true, but do you expect people to just use double the hashtags going forward? One with readable text, the other in image form which you then have to hope works in every context?> textual hashtags [...] aren't always as accessible in their meaning either

Everyone can make "bad" hashtags, but I don't think making the pool worse is going to improve that. If any, it'd make it worse, now people can make bad hashtags with both text and images.> There are cultures around emoji use, that give meaning in certain contexts, and those cultures are part of social fabric and cohesion then

That sounds like a rather big assumption. Are you aware of any cultures that are currently unable to use hashtags, that have a strict need to use basically any image they can think of? To me this sounds incredibly unlikely, especially in the context of the .
