Hooray, someone actually put "TEST MESSAGE" only in an alert.

weilawei,
@weilawei@mastodon.online avatar

@ai6yr Mostly rhetorical questions from engineer brain: Why does a test message contain information that might be subject to a panicky human interpretating it? I understand code paths and testing issues around changing the message, but it does already say test message. Couldn't they use dummy text of equal length if this is going to get broadcast?

@Montag @DamienMarieAtHope There are over 180,000 businesses in MA, and the mean household income is $89k, as of 2021 census data. There are over 138,000 employer firms. That means it's likely to be between $5,560 and $7,250 per business, per year, because it's primarily the business owner class who makes that money. It ain't engineers, generally, lemme tell ya.

Allowing Black people to entertain white people, either through song or athletics, is not equality.

weilawei,
@weilawei@mastodon.online avatar

@rato @StillIRise1963 It's very very real, and is entirely decoupled from your personal qualities. Boss is having a bad day? Odds are, they're going to take it out on the nearest non-white person. I've seen time after time the best workers get fired for having the wrong skin color. For absolutely any interaction the default treatment I get is positive or neutral, whereas I watch people with different skin color get nice words to their face, and the instant you're in the break room, it's slurs.

CNBC Anchor Accuses UAW Leader of 'Class Warfare' for Fighting for Workers

"Record profits mean record contracts," said United Auto Workers Shawn Fain. "They've been competitive on our backs and it's time they pay up."

Labor advocates said Thursday that United Auto Workers president Shawn Fain is clearly "doing something right" after CNBC anchor Jim Cramer unleashed a diatribe targeting the labor leader over his ambitious demands for a new contract

weilawei,
@weilawei@mastodon.online avatar

@nuncio @stux @Spellbind0127 MA labor laws are terrible. The state is pretty nice, but don't overhype it.

At will employment, fire for any reason; they walked back how many hours they have to pay you for dragging you in from 4 to 3; health care is virtually impossible to get at times if your employer doesn't offer it, and sometimes still impossible if the paperwork gets lost outside the window for applying (why is there a window?!); and on, and on.

Things are going the wrong direction here.

helenczerski, to climate
@helenczerski@fediscience.org avatar

Heatwaves involve a chunk of extra energy arriving where it's not wanted/expected. But it is energy. Is anyone talking about extracting and using that energy to feed into the grid (and perhaps cool the surroundings down a bit)? Obviously it's technically "only" a few degrees so hard to run a heat engine off it, but has anyone heard of any actual work to turn it into electricity?

weilawei,
@weilawei@mastodon.online avatar

@helenczerski Concentrate and reflect it into space? I thought of laser cooling, which might be impractical at scale, but the wiki article had a bit on anti-Stokes cooling in CO2.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laser_cooling#Anti-Stokes_cooling

weilawei,
@weilawei@mastodon.online avatar

@helenczerski "The active cooling does not depend on the coherent nature of the radiation, which enables the usage of incoherent solar radiation as the active cooling input power source. The cooling technology of the invention is suitable for small and large scales and practically for any object with surface on which the layer substance can be applied or overlaid, e.g., roof, wall, car, ship, tent, clothing, etc."

@HistoPol @pluralistic This kind of excrement is why every worker, every engineer, every person with any kind of agency needs to put their foot down when this kind of corruption happens in their wheelhouse. You often don't have to go far to do good.

And yeah, it's usually a pretty knock-down, drag-out streetfight, because the thieves and fraudsters would rather work harder to cheat than trade fairly.

weilawei,
@weilawei@mastodon.online avatar

@Litzz11 @AlexanderVI @qurlyjoe This is part of the conservative theocratic strategy. To the poor, the imprisoned and enslaved, they'll be all, "turn the other cheek, cool stuff in the next life for you while I beat you in this life", and then preach King David's rape as morally justified by God because he's powerful so that's how it's supposed to work.

The one piece they never mention is Jesus revoking the old covenant.

The Family Foundation and prison bible studies are two examples.

mekkaokereke, (edited ) to aliens
@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io avatar

If the US government really had alien bodies, then the US president would know about it.

If the US president knew about it, then Trump would know about it.

If Trump knew about it, he would have told everyone, bragged about it, kept boxes of documents about it at Mar-A-Lago, etc. There would be a ketchup stained original photograph of an alien autopsy on the floor of his bathroom.

Since we haven't heard him brag about having seen a photo of an alien, we know that he hasn't seen one.
