yappari,

@StillIRise1963 I was just thinking that Billie Eilish looked better than usual. Tracy Chapman was awesome, she looked amazing

yappari,

@StillIRise1963 I was very happy that Tracy Chapman looked like the decades have treated her well. It was great to see her smile

yappari,

@StillIRise1963 You’re right that the looks are underwhelming. So are the performances so far except for Tracy. At least we’ve got Trevor Noah

Her dried-up yard won an ‘Ugliest Lawn’ award. She hopes it inspires others.

Via Kyle Griffin:

Judge Pan and Judge Henderson ask about a statement a lawyer for made during his impeachment that he should not be impeached because he would be subject to prosecution after he left office.

Trump lawyer Dean Sauer simply says that whatever Trump argued during impeachment isn't really relevant to these arguments.

Fat Leonard, a Malaysian who bribed US officials for decades with prostitutes and lavish hospitality, costing US taxpayers an estimated $50 million dollars, has been caught again. He was sentenced for only to escape from California to Venezuela.

The gift article here reads like a movie plot.

Who is ‘Fat Leonard,’ the fugitive Venezuela turned over to the U.S.?

We could have a mandatory two-year program between high school and college where students serve the nation between by helping communities prepare for and/or repair climate change damage. They could be placed in parts of the nation very different from their own and with a diverse mix of their peers, both ethnically and socio-economically.

    yappari,

@StillIRise1963 This is a fabulous idea. We need a culture of serving the greater good. Working together and bonding with people from different walks of life.

Good morning to readers; Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands.

Today’s issue is a personal essay, titled ‘PTSD, Booze, and Me.’

It’s about what I learned from a dark period in my life while covering this war.

When I advised POC college students, I encouraged all of them to go abroad for the whole of junior year. There were many obvious reasons for this, but I also wanted them to have a break from the racism here, and know they could live elsewhere, that they had choices.

    yappari,

@StillIRise1963 This is good advice for ALL college students. If I had not had the study abroad experience, I wouldn’t have gained perspective on our racism, our extremism about capitalism and religion, or our completely deluded American exceptionalism. It was life changing.

    yappari,

@StillIRise1963 I’m very curious about how Tunesia compared to home. I have never made it there. Less white supremacy framing everything?

In Japan the physical safety was one of the major noticeable differences - no threat of gun violence. That and a much easier, equitable health care system in which everyone received top notch care.

    @stevewfolds

    yappari,

@StillIRise1963 Wow, what an experience. My host mom died soon after I lived with them, very suddenly from a stroke or aneurysm (never did manage to pin down the exact translation). I was with them for ceremonies the year after her death. I hear her and host dad’s advice to me all the time in my head. They are both long passed but I often think about what it took for them to open their home and hearts to me. This was in a home where the funeral picture of host dad’s brother, KIA in WWII by Americans, hung prominently on the wall.

    yappari,

@StillIRise1963 Exactly, just people dealing with universal life struggles. We have so much in common across cultures despite our differences. I try to remember that with the other side of the political divide, too, but it’s harder.

Good morning to readers; remains in Ukrainian hands.

    I'm out of the hospital.

In today's issue: I talk about my experience in the public hospital system, and
Joseph Roche takes us to the front to report on how hungry soldiers feed themselves.

In a wooded area, after a fleeting summer rain, a group of soldiers are gathered around a makeshift table.

"Pass me a plate!" shouts one of the soldiers before serving himself a large piece of chicken. "It's a day to celebrate."

    yappari,

Inspired by an exchange between @StillIRise1963 and @ehren, this is a call for (short) stories about how you have coped with loved ones lost to #Trumpism #MAGA and #fascism. When your loved ones fell for #disinformation and lies, what did you do? Were you able to stay connected? Were you able to understand and address the underlying issues? Success stories of bringing people back from their alternate reality are especially welcome.
