On my own output, I have to say that Silicon Valley disrupted me out of social relations with the world.
Facebook and Twitter were for so long vibrant venues of discussion. People wanted to answer your thoughts, brilliant armchair-philosophical discussions were had on my #facebook page, for almost a decade.
Then #enshittification took over. And I’d grown accustomed to being able to call on similar minds at the magic of #socialmedia
I was happy to give up my social circles. I didn’t need them.
Another day, another blatantly misleading and possibly malicious paid advertisement on #Facebook.
Super Mario 3D World is a Nintendo game. It was only ever released on NIntendo's consoles; the WiiU and the Switch.
The website is not nintendo(.)com, but supermarioworld-nintendo(.)com, which is not legit. The TLS certificate is a free one from Let's Encrypt, while the actual Nintendo website gets their certificate from Digicert. 1/
THREAD: Meta's massive Ethiopian failures are the subject of a multi billion dollar lawsuit.
An intro for my new fediverse family, highlighting how hate speech and misinformation on Facebook incited bloodshed, worsened ethnic tensions amidst a civil war that killed hundreds of thousands in the country between 2020-2022.
This photo appeared on my #Facebook Memories. It's been years, but if anyone here from #Malaysia knows this man, let me know. His name is Saran Saravanan and he's an Uber driver. We went to Malaysia in 2017 and he was very kind to drive us from Gombak to Pahang which is more than an hour drive. When we had to go back to #KualaLumpur due to emergency, he went back to pick us up. He said we can add him on Facebook but he never gave his profile. I want to say hi to him and ask how he's doing.
Starting tomorrow, I will do my best to have Social Media Detox weekends, which means I will not use any social media on Saturdays and Sundays, including chat modules such as Facebook Messenger.
And to be fair, Mastodon and Calckey are also included in this experiment. Join me if you want, and let's share our experiences on Monday.
It may seem strange, but I've started writing down my personal manifesto on how I handle my social media usage. Those will be guidelines to follow, simply because I want to revert to using social media as a tool more mindfully.

“But at the very least, if a server goes down, it should not be catastrophic to you. Your social world shouldn’t live inside an app, or depend on a company staying solvent. It should, and could, be much bigger than that."
The tech industry is abuzz about a new standard for social networking that is more open, more user-centric, and potentially more powerful than #Twitter and #Facebook. But we’ve been here before.
But this website looks really suspicious, and I'm almost positive that hundreds of people are going to get scammed by fake settlement websites that collect personal information.
Somebody needs to ensure that this website is legitimate and differentiate it from potential spoofs.
Although today is not #caturday, I'm trying to test theory that an #opengraph images lighter than 300KB can break the "whatsapp sometimes doesn't share the image" curse.
Even #Facebook ❗
The only place where I and lots of people on [#stackexchange] get these problems is #Whatsapp.
Maybe the quickest fix would be to tell my friends to move to Signal :marx_thinking:
Many people have been asking me over the last few months to share my Twitter threads regarding lawsuits threatening Google, Facebook and others over here. I'll try to be better as developments play out but here is one relevant to today. Thanks. https://mstdn.social/@jasonkint/110073102431369061
I.e. many more apps (>2 million) and way over 100k of developers from high-risk foreign countries like #Russia, #China, and #NothKorea, with access to sensitive personal information of users and their #sociographs.
More #US and other countries' #elections can be strongly influenced by (hostile) foreign countries.
@noondlyt @dannotdaniel
You are absolutely right.
And the extremely negative impact of privately controlled, (tweaked) #algorithm fueled #SocialMedia platforms like #Twitter and #Facebook, as well as its mind- and reality-changing impact on humanity are scientifically proven.
An awesome and insightful but complex wrap-up can be listened to in this #podcast:

Embrace: Look, we've launched a shiny new Twitter clone!
It's not an empty new social platform, like Google Plus was. You can already access all the content on Mastodon and all the other ActivityPub-based platforms!
We've seen the light! We now embrace open networks!
And it's so simple!
All you people who wanted to switch to Mastodon, but freaked out when you read the word "server" and thought it was too complicated for you, no fear! We've done away with the confusing choice for you! It's a super simple UX!
Extend: Our shiny new Twitter clone now integrates seamlessly with Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and more! You can even get notifications in Horizon Worlds!
Oh, we're not integrating our other platforms to ActivityPub. If you want one easy platform for Meta's social media platforms and ActivityPub, our Twitter clone is your only choice!
To advertisers and media, we'll let you boost posts too, for a tiny fee!
We'll feature you prominently on our new algorithmic feed.
So don't bother spinning up your own Masto instance, join us instead!
Extinguish: As of 1 July, we are depreciating support for ActivityPub.
Also, effective immediately, our privacy terms have been updated. You won't believe what we hid on page 76.
#Google isn't a search engine. #Facebook isn't a journal to share with your friend. #Instagram isn't a public photo album. #Twitter isn't a micro-blogging website.
Und auch deshalb ist die Digitalisierung, die früher oder später unweigerlich auf eine Post-Privacy-Gesellschaft herausläuft, in erster Linie eine Dystopie:
"As abortion bans across the nation are implemented and enforced, law enforcement is turning to social media platforms to build cases to prosecute women seeking abortions or abortion-inducing medication – and online platforms like Google and Facebook are helping. "
Facebook and Google are handing over user #data to help police prosecute #abortion seekers

This spring, a woman named Jessica Burgess and her daughter will stand trial in #Nebraska for performing an illegal abortion — with a key piece of evidence provided by #Meta, the parent company of Facebook."
#Clearview#AI used nearly 1m times by US police, it tells the BBC
"CEO Hoan Ton-That also revealed Clearview now has 30bn images scraped from platforms such as #facebook taken without users' permissions.
The company has been repeatedly fined millions of dollars in #Europe and #Australia for breaches of privacy.
Critics argue that the police's use of Clearview puts everyone into a "perpetual police line-up".
"Whenever they have a photo of a suspect, they will compare it to your face," says Matthew Guariglia from the @eff says. "It's far too invasive.""
