ADHD

I've found something interesting that happened recently. I've long fought with being a pop drinker. Always loved drinking Pepsi (despite knowing how terrible that stuff tends to be). Recently I started on some medication and I've found that my appetite for pop has just dissipated. I decided on a whim to have a Pepsi out of the fridge just now and I managed 3 sips before giving up on it. Has anyone else had an experience like that?

@devxvda I find I just have a big coffee in the morning. I kinda want the afternoon coffee out of habit, but no longer need in the same way I used to to get through the day

bp,

Tall people just have twice as much cupboard space to lose things in

deadwisdom,

@bp This is why I've embraced open shelves so I can see everything. I still forget about it all, but at least it gets dusty.

I have a question about , but ONLY for my out there (suspected/self dx counts):

What are your favorite mechanics? Or, alternatively, what elements in a video game are the most engaging for you?

ADHDefy,
@ADHDefy@easymode.im avatar

@mariyadelano Yes, same! I rarely beat games with long campaigns, because it's hard to hold my attention for 40+ hours, but if I connect with the characters, I gotta see it through.

And yes, puzzles are my jam, too. 😁

I was the kid who loved grinding in RPGs so now half my games are just based on grinding mechanics 😅

orangegoldgreen,

to me! I only want 3 things:

  1. a viable solution to the climate crisis
  2. an easily accessible ADHD medication that actually works, but also doesn't give so many garwsh darn side effects
  3. an eyebrow pen that actually fucking matches the color of my eyebrows

Apparently these are all unreasonable requests.

Was listening to the Mac Power Users "State of The Platforms" episode and mostly what it made me think was that I just don't like apple much anymore.

They're all the worst aspects of combined. Spurts of creative energy directed at something, then wandering off the moment it stops being interesting. They leave things 80% done, and then forget they exist until forced to remember years later.

Today's been a real struggle with things. Just ... totally draining to stay even remotely on topic.

However, I'm happy to report that I've lost a bet with @dachary regarding if we would get new glasses first (end of june) or me getting drugs. My money was on glasses.

Tomorrow... tomorrow we take drugs! 🎉

are they good drugs? will tehy work? who knows?! they're the first drugs i've been able to acquire in a month.

Feels like the BBC's story hinges on that weird part of the NHS' diagnostic criteria: you can only be diagnosed if they deem it to be "significantly affecting" your life. No doubt their bar is less attainable than private.

Which means if you spent 20 years figuring out mechanisms to manage it then congratulations, you don't have the thing. Like how if your leg gets blown off but you fashion your own crutch to move about on, you're now completely normal and need no help with mobility.

FirefighterGeek,
@FirefighterGeek@masto.ai avatar

@Timberwolf

It's a standard diagnostic criteria pretty much everywhere I've seen, including my own diagnosis (treated for 30+ years now).

The thing about the symptom list in the diagnostic manuals, is almost all of them can be described by most people unless you add the caveat that the symptom is significant enough to be impacting your life.

Requiring coping mechanisms, IS considered an impact on your life though, so if you've spent 20 years coping, it still counts.

counsellingkaren,

so the bbc and the times (both far right in politics) after years of attacking lgbtqaai people have moved onto neurodivergent
There is a documentary out claiming lots of people are "misdiagnosed" with adhd/add
They did this by having a journalist lie about his symptoms
Guess what - if you lie to a doctor they will misdiagnose you
Let's ask why they did this?

Hey fam, in the past couple months I've been diagnosed with and it has been life changing, in a great way, and I'm in the best place I've ever been. However, I've still got work to do and would love to get some ADHD to help me get a better quality of life.

I know times are tough but if you are in a position to flick me some cash, no matter how small, to put towards some ADHD coaching I would be forever grateful.

Yours in Cyberia,
Dr H.

Last time, I asked the Dr about an dx. He said there's only one person in the entire state and it would take a year+ just to get an appt..

He offered to write a prescription and just see if that helped. I declined for reasons I'm not clear about. I think I just don't like taking things. I want someone to snap their fingers and Make It So.

I have another visit this week. Considering asking again.

It feels like cheating. And like maybe knowing is more important than treating?

joshfreedman,

@davidr If it will take awhile to get a formal diagnosis and your doctor is already willing to try a prescription, then I think it could be worth getting it if you think it will help and understand the risks of the meds.

I’m no doctor, but I’ve been taking Adderall XR (extended release) for the past 6 months for ADHD. Main side effects for me have been anxiety, but only when my dosage was too high or I drank too much coffee. Loss of appetite is another common effect, but YMMV

joshfreedman,

@davidr At least for me, it’s not a silver bullet, but it does make it easier to focus most days. Sorry if this is too much info, just wanted to share my experience 🙂

That moment when you realize the reason you did so much better on tests in childhood than when getting asked questions in class was because everyone had to stfu, including especially the teacher.

Being able to take a second to think about a question with no distractions from people trying to "help" made such a difference.

StutteringLoudly,

= setting your alarm too late because you expect the urgency / anxiety to give you motivation (and super speed) to get up AND get ready AND leave on time but you still end up being late because time blindness 😂😫 @adhd @actuallyadhd

So good. I did everything possible to leave on time for an appointment and took one last trip to the john. I knew I had 10 minutes to spare. Which I didn't because I forgot to actually check the clock. So I did a few minutes of Amazon shopping on my phone and got into my truck confident I even had five minutes to spare. I left 20 minutes late with no chance to be on time.

jtphillipsmnr,

Work From Home would be amazing for me!

I suffer from mysterious list of ailments that doctors (and psychiatrists!) Have basically given up on and are now throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what fixes it.

Having the power to eat when I can, lie down when a migraine hits, or change the brightness and airflow in a quiet room would be AMAZING. And that's not to mention the benefits to the and .

I work best at night anyways. (It is something a lot of ADHD people say.)

jtphillipsmnr,

@devxvda From an IT security standpoint... doing a meeting on a train is absolutely BATTY. I guess the company wants their info out there in the public?
From a comfort standpoint, that doesn't sound comfortable at all. I'm sorry, that sounds like it sucked.
Management is usually heavily behind the times on things that won't make them immediate money.
Not everyone wants to live at work! What culture!!

I'm agreeing with you. 🥴

jtphillipsmnr,

@nuncio
That sounds. Absolutely awful. Like existentially awful. Am sorry.

Ah yes. People reiterating the same ideas for 4 hours per meeting. Two or more meetings a day. Yes, that's great for your productivity. eye roll

ionizedgirl,

@BathysphereHat i dropped out of highschool and then i got kicked out of university for getting so many Fs and then i got a phd

Mayabotics,

@BathysphereHat I hate this term, but the combination of gifted and disabled is often called "twice exceptional" in education.

It wasn't until I got into college and started struggling that I realized that I had been getting unofficial accommodations in elementary and high school because I had been seen as a hard-working student, which was probably why my ADHD went undiagnosed for so long.

I wanted to post this for my and the at large. These are low- to no-effort nutrition tips that I have accumulated over the years for "no spoons" days:

  • There are a ton of veggies you can eat with no preparation at all. Baby carrots, snap peas, cucumber, grape/snacking tomatoes, mini bell peppers (the red ones are sweet and you can bite into them like an apple), romaine/leafy green lettuce, spinach, mushrooms, canned bamboo shoots/menma, jalapeños, bean sprouts, and a bunch more.

  • Sardines. They are a great protein source and so damn nutrient-dense. All you have to do is pull the top off the can.

  • Sprouts can be added to sooo many things. They're barely noticeable and they pack in a lot of extra nutrients. I like alfalfa sprouts, but there are also clover sprouts, broccoli sprouts, and others--and they're all super good for you. I put them on sandwiches, mix them into salads, wtv.

  • Plain avocado oil is a fine salad dressing that's also a great source for healthy fat with Omega-3s. It's also good on rice, potatoes, or anything you'd put butter on.

  • Oatmeal is a great healthy carb. Just get some instant oats and add water. Microwave or use an electric kettle. You can add some fruit and honey to make it sweet, you can add chocolate protein powder and peanut butter to make it decadent, you can throw sautéed mushrooms and chives in it and put a fried egg on top to make it savory.

  • Peanut butter is my JAM, but almond butter is arguably better for you. Just find a nut butter with as few ingredients as possible on the label, but ideally one that is no stir. Eat it with a spoon, put it on bread, put it on apple slices, put it on put it on whatever. It can be high sodium, but if you're having trouble getting enough calories or enough protein: peanut butter.

  • Are you having lots of no spoons days? Depression slump? Chronic illness? Let me introduce you to Tray™. Just get a normal tray, ideally with hand-holdy bits. Reserve a shelf in your fridge for it, and load a variety of foods onto it. Maybe some lunch meat, cheese, a bit of dark chocolate, whatever you want. Just put a bunch of zero-effort foods, then when you are hungry, remove Tray™, eat stuff off of it, return Tray™ to fridge. Just make sure to restock it every week.

  • If you have the means, look into Instant Pots. Especially the ones with the air fryer. You can bake potatoes, make hardboiled eggs, rice, broth, and all kinds of basics really easily. There are also a bajillion hands-off, one-pot recipes that you can make with it. Dump some stuff in, put on the lid, press a couple buttons, wait a few minutes--dinner's ready. It takes so much time, thought, and energy out of cooking.

  • Easy portions: your plate = 50% veggie, 25% lean protein, 25% complex carb. Add a Tbsp or two worth of healthy fat onto that.

I hope this helps! Please feel free to comment any tips you've picked up.

alan,

That feeling where the hyperfocus obsession has you freshly in its grips over a video game and you want to spend all the time you’re not playing the video game reading about the video game but also you’re not very far in the video game and don’t want to spoil anything…

…so instead you just vibrate.

meds are super helpful, but rebound is - - - whoo boy!🫣

ClaudetteK,

@joshua The teen has really difficult rebound but often doesn’t realize that it is rebound, and despite knowing that this happens I often only realize they’re experiencing rebound about 10 minutes into the very reboundy emotional conversation. There’s a lot going on at the moment, so feeling feels isn’t unreasonable - that’s what trips me up every time. You’d think I’d learned by now. 🤦🏽‍♀️

As an Programmer, staying on top of work (what to do, & not letting things slip through the cracks), and knowing if I'm doing "enough" has been hard. I've put together a tool to help with that, and I'm thrilled with how much it's been helping. I thought I'd give you a sneak peek.

This is the "dashboard" it's a high level overview of all the things: notes, tasks, open PRs, and a couple graphs of PR related things.

1/?

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

oh, and the complete lack of PR contributions by week by me in the graph (for most weeks) is because i just started the new job so I wasn't there to contribute. ;)

masukomi,
@masukomi@connectified.com avatar

A couple details from the dashboard...

clicking a note's title will expand it. Clicking a ticket's title will take you to the ticket in the originating system. Unsure how I feel about these working differently but it feels like the right defaults.

Also showing how you can designate some tasks as one's you're just "observing" At work they create tickets for discussion and You'll get assigned to it (so it shows up) but you're not on the hook for work, and you want to keep an eye on it.
