Smoking BBQ

ben,
@ben@mastodon.bentasker.co.uk avatar

My last cigarette was 6 years ago today

Feels like a lot longer, though I still periodically find myself fancying one - particularly if there's time that I need to kill.

I don't think that'll ever go away though.

@bazkie@chaos.social avatar

@ben Congrats!

My tip would be: try to not look back at smoking with nostalgia, but with hatred. You were enslaved by a murderous industry, now you're free. That mindset worked very well for me

ben,
@ben@mastodon.bentasker.co.uk avatar

@bazkie Yeah, I try to think about it in similar terms. Plus I tell myself I'd probably be sick if I had one now

UK Health Secretary Victoria Atkins on the Tobacco and Vaping Bill - 'There is no liberty in addiction. Nicotine robs people of their freedom to choose. The vast majority of smokers start when they are young, and three-quarters say that if they could turn back the clock they would not have started. That is why, through this Bill, we are creating a smoke-free generation that will guarantee that no-one who is turning 15 or younger this year will ever be legally sold tobacco, saving them from the misery of repeated attempts to give up, making our economy more productive and building an NHS that delivers faster, simpler and fairer care. I would argue it is our responsibility, indeed our duty, to protect the next generation and this is what this Bill will do.' https://au.news.yahoo.com/no-liberty-addiction-health-secretary-135902928.html

LouisIngenthron,
@LouisIngenthron@qoto.org avatar

@drrimmer They claim nicotine robs people of their freedom to choose with the force of addiction... and their answer is to rob people of their freedom to choose with the force of police and jail?

If they were really serious about addiction, they'd apply the same rule to caffeine in tea.

The NCAA really doesn’t want fans in Europe. Not only can I not find any way to watch March Madness from Spain, I couldn’t do brackets on most sites (did on ESPN and my family will have to cross-compare).
It’s probably my 4th-least favorite thing about living here (No. 1, 2 and 3 are all the same, cigarette smoking is much more common and smoke really bothers me).

obrien_kat,
@obrien_kat@mastodon.world avatar

@mlawton @obrien_kat this was just to do a bracket, not even to stream! I’m not really surprised streaming isn’t available as college basketball isn’t popular at all in Europe, but that their site can’t handle basic GDPR of an email address?

mlawton,
@mlawton@mstdn.social avatar

@obrien_kat well, that is definitely suboptimal! 🙄

8lbs of locally sourced bacon for $65 and it's infinitely better than store-bought.

jfmezei,
@jfmezei@mstdn.ca avatar

@chad Localy sourced? pig in your backyard? 😉
How is the meat kept during all those days? cold in fridge? warm with smoke or whatever to prevent it from spoiling?

chad,
@chad@mstdn.ca avatar

@jfmezei Farm near Camrose. The meat has a curing solution applied to it, weighed to its mass, and over the period of the next week will penetrate the meat, giving it a pretty pink colour.
Spoilage starts where air meets the meat, so already the bacteria on the surface has been destroyed.
In fact, even if the cure doesn't completely penetrate the meat, as long as the meat is frozen after smoking it's safe.

A new study by Cancer Research UK suggests since 2020 a decades long reduction in the numbers by around 5% a year has halted.

Worryingly this halt has been most evident in deprived & poor regions/localities, while smoking among the 18-24 age group has actually begun to go up.

One of 's few bipartisan polices, his aim to make the UK 'smoke free' by 2030, may therefore end up be more costly (in social support for giving up) than envisaged.

That's no reason to stop though!

Research published in Lancet Oncology concludes that in the poorest areas, the risk of dying from is more than 70% higher than in the wealthiest areas.

The key to the difference is lifestyle changes, with giving up is a key shift; but of course, especially in poorer areas services to aid giving up has been hit by funding cuts.

Equally, getting fit also isn't cheap; from to , if you have no money fitness aids are out of reach

I once had a dream about this recording of Buddy Emmons and Lenny Breau doing “Compared to what”, in which:

  • the third break extended into a 5 minute jam
  • the sound guy was blinded by light reflecting off the pedal steel (unconscious brain says: “that’s what cool looks like”), and
  • the glass window of the sound booth shattered from the force of the jam

I think it was pretty fitting

If is considering a progressive ban on the purchase of & thereby moving towards making illegal, one can only presume that his chums lobbying for the industry now feel that their employers () have a handle on alternative income streams - perhaps?

But, one thing is for sure Rushi would not have floated such a proposal without first checking with his advisors (who in turn would have checked with the lobbyists & those they represent!)

1/ Many behaviors are prohibited because they endanger others.

Second-hand smoke from is dangerous. It once posed a serious health risk indoors and indoor was eventually banned in virtually all public spaces in the US. The smokers complained that their “right” to smoke anywhere was being infringed. There is no such right. …

shuttersparks,
@shuttersparks@qoto.org avatar

@meltedcheese People in the U.S.A. seem to have forgotten that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled about 120 years ago that you do not have the right to endanger your fellow citizens and that this overrides the First Amendment (Bill of Rights) in the Constitution.

The power to enforce this is very great (the extent of it would shock most Americans) and is in the hands of the governors of the states. But none of them seem to have the courage to use that power today. It was used during the Spanish Flu Epidemic and is credited with saving at least 20,000 lives in the City of San Francisco alone.
