sourcerer, I have two options now ...
Order Ryzen 7 5700G
keep money, and build pc with new GPU (powercolor red devil)
If i get more familiar in time with FreeBSD and bhyve etc then new PC will make sense.
Now for future i need to look for server parts/ready solutions.
Actually, i have no idea which hardware to buy for selfhosting stuff.
Every video on youtube is like "Hey! build a low power server!" ... half video later "there's a catch! You cannot buy this CPU" 😂 Waste of time.
I need something that can draw very little at IDLE (c-states etc.).
Server purpose? i think local backup storage is good to start. Not sure if i'm able to build something in safe manner and expose to web.
ironicbadger, @sourcerer maybe you will find something here to help your decision process.
boilingsteam, (edited )
PalePimp, @boilingsteam It is missing an option for 5+ years, my X220 still works like a treat.
boilingsteam, @PalePimp at least 3 years means more than 3 years
sourcerer, I want to play with "PCI Passthrough" / "GPU Passthrough" whatever.
I plan to buy Ryzen 7 5700G or something similar with integrated graphics card.
I wonder, can You use integrated graphics for baremetal OS, and for vm PCI passthrough, GPU (rx 580 8gb)?
Whenever i read about PCI passthrough everyone say "You need 2x GPU". I'm thinking about running OS on integrated card, and use GPU for vm.
Taffer, The Asustor Drivestor 4-bay NAS devices are cheaper than Synology, but I have no idea how their software compares.
JeremiahFieldhaven, @Taffer FWIW, I've had a Synology DS420+ for nearly 4 years now, populated with 4 drives.
The initial cost was admittedly significant, not going to lie, but to date I've had (almost) no complaints about it.
The DSM software is decent, easy to maintain, and everything Just Works. Could I have made my own system for less? Absolutely. But for a very neatly presented, self-contained, reliable system it works very well.
Taffer, Since I can't stop thinking about expanding my NAS (I've got a 2-bay NAS now, apparently my brain "needs" a 4+ bay NAS), so I'm looking into building one from parts vs just buying the 4-bay Synology.
Finding small cases with four drive bays is apparently hard; they've all got 1-2 bays and a huge amount of space for a massive GPU because only gamers buy them?

matthegap, German @gnulinux He, mein regulärer Desktop PC ist seit 12 Jahren in Verwendung.

PalePimp, @boilingsteam Gimmick had a predictable gimmick lifecycle. 🤷
boilingsteam, @PalePimp yeah, but it's good that someone tries. For Apple this is pocket money anyway, they can experiment with almost zero risk
gilesgoat, Even more #mysterious #hardware that I can NOT remember WHERE/how/when I got it NOR have ANY idea of what it could be ..
Mysterious hardware, no idea what it is or where it comes from.
Close up of one of those chips, again not a clue what this can be.
gilesgoat, @llamasoft_ox WOW .. so it's part of a terminal that was connected to the CDC-6000 ? .. Make sense .. I am starting to suspect to remember where all this comes from .. but at this point I won't / can't say .. sadly I think all that stuff been really thrashed and destroyed very long ago 😢 NOT by me of course, and this was part of a dumpster diving ..
llamasoft_ox, @gilesgoat clean them up, put them in a frame and flog 'em haha (or put them on your wall) :D

AminiAllight, Long-shot to end all long-shots but: does anybody know anything about USB on raw Xilinx transceivers (e.g. without a PHY)? Officially it's unsupported, occasionally people say they've gotten it to work and more details on exactly how would be incredibly useful
Boosts appreciated for visibility

healsdata, What's the alternative to Tom's Hardware for trustworthy #hardware reviews and benchmarks these days? I heard they got bought by a crappy overlord and are less than trustworthy now-a-days.

koma, German Grml.
amapanda,
Doudouosm, @amapanda Framework: https://frame.work/be/en/products/laptop-diy-13-gen-intel. I’m not sure for Debian, though.
RLin, @Doudouosm @amapanda Debian seems to work fine on my Framework 13/16 using a live usb, only thing I couldn't get to work instantly is the fingerprint reader. Obviously just browsing around and doing some OSM editing isn't really giving a full image, though basic features like WiFi, Bluetooth, battery level and webcam seem to work fine out of the box.
ottaross, I should post an update on last week's #hardware hack of the old clock radio. Searching for that thread…
ottaross, (edited ) There - done. :)
I suppose I could print a nice clean final set of plastics for the project housing, as I've incorporated all the changes made by soldering iron.
Frankly though, it sits somewhere such that we never see it until it fails or something, so the rough prototype print is probably sufficient.
masukomi, Question for the #hardware geeks.
Every night i take my mac to the living room, bring it back, and plug it in to power with the lid closed. Each morning I plug it into the monitor and open the lid.Why is it that all of my #bluetooth devices (mouse & airpods) seem to be reconnected just fine, but my #Glove80 split keyboard, & the #Kinesis split keyboard refuse to. I have to restart bluetooth on the computer for them to be connected.
???
lorimolson, @masukomi I gave up on wireless keyboards. They’d just randomly disconnect, and it was too annoying to deal with all the time.
masukomi, @lorimolson very reasonable / sensible
i’m happy to report that the Kinesis Advantage 360 and MoErgo Glove80 both stay connected (except in that edge case) and both could just be left plugged in
However… the Glove80 will drain its battery in < a day if you leave the colored LEDs on 🤦♀️
