I just finished "Protocols, Not Platforms" by @mmasnick. Great read. Interoperability is key to the future of social media, as it was (and still is) to the Internet and many other technologies.
LLaMA-2 - the 13 billion parameter model - seems to be quite good. Maybe not GPT-4 level, but certainly far better than the previous version. If #Meta keeps up, they may play the ultimate disruptor in AI.

So #Meta has released it's new AI model. They claim is ethical and #opensource. Well, i don't think this is going to be a huge surprise for nobody, but contrary to the claims, it is not open source, is not ethical (They say, literally, that is ethical because it does not use meta users data... But it steal it from other places) and the licensing is just so chaotic that i have serious doubts it would hold in court. Read the paper, if you are willing to be treated like an idiot.
I don't see how #Meta's #fediverse integration could be anything other than an embrace-and-extend attack by a genocidal network monopoly with an exquisitely detailed history of disrupting competition before it can start.
Might be fun for a little bit then they'll draw the trap shut same way they did with RSS and every private acquisition since. Aside their already totalizing enshittification they're too poorly moderated to avoid server bans if the admins care about anything other than money.

Don't confuse a limited concession to enter a garden by a gatekeeper with a true common. Open Source has a precise meaning that includes all commercial use, don't let that meaning be diluted.
