Reaper, the digital audio workstation

gocu54,

A friend taught me about this thing called step recording using . I can use this to make custom sounds for my programs. Is there some sosrt of person who is teaching this? ,

ronald,
@ronald@ohai.social avatar

@gocu54 today I learned step recording is possible in reaper! so for any question I would always recommend videos as he is the master of reaper. I do notice a hashtag so I am not sure if this will help you but here goes https://youtu.be/oO_QBWBb6pk?feature=shared

I forgot in my earlier post, I think you folks might appreciate. Adding some analog stank (and humanity) to sterile computer sounds.

Ie. All-analog mix of electronic music through an A&H GL2200 and 14 analog compressors (mostly dBx, but a Drawmer and an Ashley in there too).

This mix creates the general structure for a final (much tighter) edit/mix/master in , which I'll do sometime in the next couple of weeks...

I finally decided to grow up and learn and dump as my . No shade on Reaper, it's a fabulous piece of proprietary software that runs well on . It's reasonably priced and highly functional. All things being equal, I'd rather use and support free software. So, when I got the point where I made my first export in Ardour, it asked me to become a subscriber, which I did, gladly, as the software works very well (for my purposes).

Hey folks, this is baffling me and I can't find the right guide! How to I add buttons to the area just above the timeline?

I can make Toolbar buttons no problem but I keep seeing videos where people have icons above the ruler, just underneath the transport.

How do I add these?

Any help much appreciated!

Edit: Solved it! It's adding a custom toolbar as a docker.

@mxtthxw is this just a theme modification?

Still not sure about this double decker bus mixer though…

Reminds me of a Yamaha M7CL which always looks daft to me.

Fuck Pro Tools…. I swear it knows I’ve been using Reaper and now it’s throwing a strop.

Look Avid, I don’t care if it is Valentine’s Day, I’m in love with just deal with it.

tiredhorizon,
@tiredhorizon@mstdn.social avatar

@mxtthxw Loved the look of Reaper. It reminded me of the old, old Logic (well in one of its skins).

Not sold on Linux for music, seems to be a hash there. No asio etc. I use windows still. PITA but a workable one (though had a fit today as it tried to update when recording)

archesofscratch73,
@archesofscratch73@zirk.us avatar

@mxtthxw I haven't used ProTools since PT 7, but it was boss as a pure audio editor (for dialogue/sfx/sound design). But I always hated the shenanigans around how they tied the program to their expensive hardware, so i switched away as soon as i could. It's been a long time and I didn't keep up, but I'm not surprised to see that the shenanigans continue. Avid was the vanguard of shitty corporate subscription services that hijack your livelihood.

Bonkwavers Int'l : often talk about on Linux

Me : Mhh I guess that's another nice piece of software I will not use, instead I will stick to my dual boot with Ableton Live on Windows.

My sound-engineer friend in Geneva, finalizing a recording of the BBC Symphonic Orchestra : Oh you still use Live? Cool. Have you tried Reaper? It's nice. And I think it works well on Linux, just saying.

Me : OK Then, that's the last straw.

johann,
@johann@masto.bike avatar

Not bad, Reaper, not bad.

I could do this AMAZING mix of my digital piano on xubuntu very easily. All the necessary plugins are included (EQ, reverb, comp, limiter)

It seems Reaper do not recognize my old digidesign MBox2 mini with only ALSA, but he's happy with PulseAudio doing the job (That's what I understand)

Let's hope he will accept to work with my soon to be there Motu M4.

review so far : yes.

Alright, gotta test the new streaming setup () this week.

What would be at least marginally interesting?

Walking through making-of for some Salvation album tracks?

My workflow for making/recording lines using

Talking about my favorite books so far?

Pedal demos?

Playing along badly to my own bass lines that I forget 2 minutes after recording?

Just jamming along with some tunes? (Suggestions/permission solicited)

well, you contain multitudes, it is true, but I could probably also help somehow

FreakyFwoof,

To my friends, I offer you the use of this service if you don't feel like spending hours and hours adding stretch markers to your project just to get something on an even keel.

  1. You send me a file.
  2. I import it into Logic.
  3. I make a midi file which contains the tempo information and you import that alongside the existing audio. This midi file will contain the tempo information you need to get the job done. It's usually quick, simple and convenient. Saves you potentially hours of your life you won't get back.

TheQuinbox,

Back with another Reaper newbie question. How exactly do I tell FX where, and when, to apply? I'm using the Voxengo beeper plugin. I created a new track, and added Beeper as an effect. But now, how do I tell it where to apply? I have a very narrow portion of audio I want to sensor.

blindelectron,

@TheQuinbox You'll have to automate that, you should listen to this podcast on automation. It's done on a mac so you know the drill, command=control and option=alt.

Sort of getting the hang of a lot more. It really is very cool what can be done in terms of customisation. Certainly beats Avid, their idea of a cool feature is put a shop in the software. Hope to get a few more hours in tomorrow before work.

@mxtthxw so much amazingness in Reaper. Monitor FX Bus, Pan type per Channel, Delta Soloing in the FX slots, and yes - you can even make it look (something) like SloTools. 🤣

It's literally a buzz kill. I'm still fucking clueless in Reaper but it's fun learning it.

Bearfaced,

@mxtthxw mind you that doesn't solve your Pro tools issue!🤣

Bearfaced,

@mxtthxw Yes I think most Reaper users have come across his videos by now, he's got a good way of explaining things.

TheQuinbox,

Reaper friends: I have a track that I want to lower the volume of gradually, but not to complete silence (roughly 50%). I know about Ctrl+Alt+O, but that fades to complete silence from the cursor to the end of the track. Any suggestions?

@TheQuinbox OSARA makes many things possible that otherwise aren't, and doesn't run on Linux, alas

TheQuinbox,

@forrestguid Sadly not. Not a whole lot of blind people use Linux as their desktop OS though.

jscholes,
@jscholes@dragonscave.space avatar

Hmm. It seems that I accidentally left recording for three days, and can't remember what I was even aiming to capture in the first place.

talon,
@talon@dragonscave.space avatar

@jscholes I was recording something with some portable recorder, finished up, thought I pressed stop and just threw it in my backpack. A few days later I wanted to get the recordings off of it. I never pressed stop. I had hours upon hours of recordings of doing the most random stuff while the thing was doing its thing in my backpack.
And then I did it again. Except this time I accidentally tapped the record widget on my watch. I didn’t find this one out until much later, but a lot of that recording is just me sitting at my computer typing. And the dread I felt while scrolling through that file, those hours of literal nothing but typing, realizing that this is how I spend a very large portion of my life, was quite something. it was quite a profound sadness.
Uh sorry anyway. All that to say yup, been there, done that, got the whole wardrobe.

jakobrosin,

@talon @jscholes I once managed to activate the start recording trigger on my watch while sleeping. That was a very interesting recording. Since I have a recording complication on my watchface, I’ve accidentally activated it a few times during the day as well. But this has given me a few precious moments to keep, so I am not really complaining.

ke7zum,

I really wish freezing tracks in would not take for ever. It took 40 minutes to freeze a 5 hour long mic track with goyo on it a few days ago. and my machine is a beast. and yes I do have render settings set to 2048 what ever that is in prefs.

bryansmart,

@ke7zum I notice your project includes video. Have you separated video and audio to separate tracks? If not, when you freeze that track, you're also freezing the video, and that limits it to the speed of the video encoder. That, also, may force resampling. I've been using DAWs for 25 years, and Reaper for 10, BTW, so am very familiar with optimizing/tweaking.

ke7zum,

@bryansmart Yep, I did. the audio still took about 47 minutes to freeze a 267 minute track with goyo. I think this was at about 8 to 10 x real time. I do separate the tracks actually so I can adjust levels post if needed.
