Has anyone implemented local trends on #mastodon? Is this a #hometown feature? I'd love to see local-only trends or at least some mechanism for positively weighting the contributions of local #AoIR users.
Neat to see @doctorow and "enshittification" making its way into academic settings. Not at all surprising to see these perspectives on the internet and platforms being engaged with by the #AoIR community.
For Ogden, it's a part of understanding how logics of crisis have informed numerous discourses of contemporary platforms and archiving practices
#CSCW2023 is now concluded! The communications team would like to acknowledge that we were unable to post to multiple platforms during the conference due to the lack of a built-in scheduling tool on this platform. We tried one external scheduling tool that did not work, and we were too hesitant to provide access to the account without more time to understand trustworthy options. Only one Comms Chair was available to attend the conference in-person, so we needed to prioritize the bird site. 1/2
@cscw@estellesmith I’d like to recommend cscwz24 abandon the bird site en mass, but of course that will surprise no one and sound like Janet’s crazy opt out stuff again instead of the fact that hey, admit it, Xitter is now overrun by Nazis. #Aoir took an active stance against X and increased productive fedi conversation immensely. If you agree then please email the incoming chairs too, because there is strength in numbers and community organizing.
Good morning folks... today we're launching our new (free, browser-based) game Trust & Safety Tycoon. Please go check it out. Everyone thinks they know how trust & safety should work, but very few have actually done the job. Now's your chance! https://trustandsafety.fun/
@mmasnick Cool! I'm on my way to the #AoIR conference where I will be sporting my TD T-shirt that proclaims that I invented email. Always fun to wear at Internet researcher conferences.
Hey everyone. I am Dr Job Mwaura a media scholar based in Africa. I research and sometimes teach media studies — with a focus on Africa. I also serve in the @AoIR executive committee.
I look forward to seeing you all at Philly next week. #AoIR2023#AoIR#introduction
With a switch to a new phone, I have taken the decision to fully get rid of X/Twitter. So can we please make this here to place to be for the perfect mix of academia talk and misc stuff? Currently I feel that LinkedIn is winning the X/Twitter replacement game for exchange about new research etc. But I'd much prefer to have this conversation here. The @AoIR instance had given take-up quite a boost in my community, but I fear it wasn't enough #twitter#mastodon#linkedIn#academia#meta#AoIR
NEW!! Excited to share this pre-Summit online event!
Join myself, Alan Jagolinzer and Sander van der Linden for an open online discussion on July 26 about: "Combatting disinformation; Threads and solutions" as we prepare for the Cambridge #Disinformation Summit
Sometimes research projects basically write themselves up I guess?!
Adam Mosseri confirming that a big component of what they hope will make Threads distinctive is mood management and calibration so as to keep the platform clean from anger, negativity, and bad vibes (and in so doing make it super brand-friendly I suppose) #AoIR#mediastudies#commodon
The most important social media question for academics right now is: how are we going to create networking opportunities for junior scholars as Twitter declines?
That's why I'm so impressed with #AoIR , the Association of Internet Researchers, who are offering scholars a Mastodon account as part of membership at https://aoir.social/about
The future of #AoIR looks to be in very good hands with the incoming 2023-2025 AoIR Executive Committee announced today who will take office at the #AoIR2023 conference in Philadelphia this October.
Thanks to everyone who ran in the elections; AoIR is lucky to have such a range of fine folks willing to step up for leadership roles!
What do you do if in final copyedits of an article, you find a book chapter that explores a similar concept your article is exploring? Add a sentence? Add a footnote? Scream into the void and pull all of your hair out one-by-one? Contact the author directly? I've been working on this for 5 damn years ugh.
my work explores the role of digital data, methods and infrastructures in the composition of collective life.
i'm currently focusing on...
