Beeper users say Apple is now blocking their Macs from using iMessage entirely. This is likely the final nail in the coffin for what Beeper has been trying to accomplish.

I just dropped my teenage son off at an activity and we had this conversation:

“How did you hear about this?”

"We have a group chat.”

"How many people are on it?”

"About 30.”

“Is it a blue bubble or green bubble chat?”

"It's blue. We don't let any Samsungs on it.”

I am partially to blame since I used to be 100% iMessage. 😞 But Apple has intentionally encouraged this bias.

I have since embraced Telegram and WhatsApp.

I mean this was the inevitable outcome. I hate that my messaging is tied to specific platforms like Apple or Facebook. Tech savvy people like me can find some niche workaround but it will take government regulation to make that available to the masses.

: "Last week, Beeper, a multiprotocol messaging company, released Beeper Mini, an alternative iMessage app reportedly based on the Pypush code that runs on Android, giving Android users the “blue bubble” that allows Apple customers to communicate securely with them. Beeper Mini stands out among earlier attempts at this by allowing users’ devices to directly communicate with Apple’s servers, rather than breaking end-to-end encryption by having messages decrypted and re-encrypted by servers in a data-center.

Beeper Mini is an example of “adversarial interoperability.” That’s when you make something new work with an existing product, without permission from the product’s creator."

Apple’s "commitment to privacy" is much more a commitment to walled gardens and Apple’s bottom line, rather than the privacy of Apple’s users. and their attack on Beeper is proof of this, Beeper which simply brings full iMessage compatibility to Android is being attacked and sued by apple.

If you want secure messaging between and phones, don’t use . Seriously, don’t do it. There are other, better and more reliable options out there (cough Signal cough).

I've used Beeper (w/a test Apple account) & liked it. However after the recent kerfuffle around Beeper Mini, I deleted the app b/c I didn't like how Beeper handled things (adding devices to my iCloud account & unregistering a phone number, both w/o my permission)

Glad it was a test account / number.

Kudos to for their competitive compatibility hijinks as of late.

No doubt they’re intentionally building a case for regulators. They’ve forced Apple’s hand, effectively showing that cross-platform comms is a matter of willingness, not technical limitation.

Seeing as Apple’s company policy is provably anti-competitive, we the users rely on state-mandated policies to overrule them in favor of adversarial interop.

US Senator Elizabeth Warren:
"“Green bubble texts are less secure. So why would Apple block a new app allowing Android users to chat with iPhone users on iMessage?"

A lot to unpack here. At the very least, this feels like foreshadowing of political trouble coming for Apple.

It is crazy that in the conversation around on with was the unspoken assumption that would be happy to foot the bill for android users to use their service for free and let a third party company charge a subscription for using Apple resources.

Why would that ever work? What company would ever agree to that?

blocking Mini was entirely predictable and clearly highlights the obvious: cares more about product lock-in and creating a two-tiered messaging system that makes people feel bad for being a green bubble than they do creating a platform that is truly E2E encrypted by default regardless of protocol.

"Privacy is a human right" means nothing if they don't actually do anything to make it happen.
