What would a fediverse forum look like to you?

I know there are some out there, but I'm getting mixed signals about whether it's working or not. Anyone tried them?

@devnull@crag.social avatar

Hi @leroy, here's the state of forum software in the #fediverse

@nodebb currently is pursuing full federation (user actors, category actors, possibly topic actors) with an alpha by end of Q1.

#Discourse has a third party dev working on their implementation but it is currently category actors only (broadcasting content out to the fediverse)

#Flarum has received funding but I am not aware of any implementation yet. However @luceos would be the person to ask about this.

It's time to ditch the chaos of Slack and Discord communities and make a return to the organised, focused world of forums.

They aren't obsolete.

They aren't real time.

They just fucking work.

havn,

@Daojoan Do you (or anyone seeing this) have advice for platforms to use, though?

I'm looking into starting two different things atm:

  1. A Facebook group for around 20 people living in the same building.

  2. A Discord server for supporters of my local football team. (Maybe a couple hundred people?)

But I really don't want to use those platforms... https://www.discourse.org seems perfect - but $50/$100+/month is waay too much! 😔

Things that could make a "comeback" in 2024:

  • feeds
  • Web forums
  • Blog Comments
  • Smaller, niche communities

vs social networks, companies owning your own content, Slack, Twitch and Discord. 🤔

mindful,

@davidbisset most of my stuff is RSS now, but more sites need to really support it at a standard. It makes them less money, but hopefully they can get over that. I'm hoping #Discourse integrates #ActivityPub more, they have it in the early stages as an extension. There's also the #phpbb forum software that is working on polished Activitypub support as well. So I'm hoping we get the start of a revival of forums in 2024. I already saw momentum with #fedi blogs last year as well.

veloren, to random

We are thinking of potentially moving development from Discord to another platform (Discord would remain as a community platform).

Do you have any recommendations for platforms and reasons why?

Examples of potential options are Discourse and Mattermost

sbb, (edited )

@veloren I've used Mattermost and Discourse a lot myself.

Mattermost makes sense when you want to use it like Slack - the thing it's a clone of. It's best used when you have little teams/subgroups of people tackling certain medium- to long-persisting areas of development or work, which are organized into "channels". Channels are sort of like "mega-threads." Each of these channels/mega-threads has a system of permissions on it as to who's allowed in, "pinned" posts, etc. The included "Boards" (kanban board feature) is additionally like Trello - great for making todo lists and tracking tasks, with comments, etc.

Discourse makes sense when it's a bunch of disjoint, random little questions about anything and everything (you know, "threads"), and there isn't any sense of coordinated teamwork.

Of the two, I prefer team server, because it's more lightweight (written in , will run even on a 4), and has a decent App with push notifications. has a less likeable mobile experience, IMHO.

Mattermost is for people who need to get a larger project (comprised of many sub-projects) done. Discourse is just for bantering forever on some broad, wide-open area of discussion, never converging on anything.

But! Having accounts separate from Mastodon is a challenge. Twice the moderation!

We’ve got our members forum on #Discourse and have enabled login with Masto accounts.

Do you know if / how Matrix can be enabled with Mastodon as SSO?

I have maintained, and continue to maintain, that my concerns about and the have nothing to do with threads as such and everything to do with how they act around the protocol.

Them releasing a client or a server would be very, very bad news in this space. Them running a multi-tenant (or multi-single-tenant) setup would be very, very bad for the fediverse.

Their presence on a single domain just doesn't say or do all that much in the grand scheme of things.

    phiofx,

@hrefna my two cents: chasing the dwindling former twitter addict pool (which seems to be the meta/threads objective) is not the future of the .

Its unique appealing proposition is not social media as we have come to dislike, but it is the federation of very diverse types of servers where people create real and lasting value. Think e.g., all these important communities.

Imho the protocol(s) should leapfrog to the desired end state and leave the mastodon era behind.

"Deficiencies of power in the present are compensated with claims of grandeur and power in the future. This is one of the many reasons why the stronger power usually has to take the first step. Resolving things requires setting most of those narratives and aspirations to the side to arrive at some way to live together in the present."

what do y'all think? : ""The biggest climate issue is a bunch of egotistical men who refuse to change," she says, referring to the heads of multinational corporations." - https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-67522279

i'm a cultural anthropologist (amateur), so my interest in her statement has less to do with "is she making an accurate statement" and more to do with: what is it that drives the desire to come up with 'the biggest issue with ___" or "the main problem with ___"? because there definitely is a desire to figure out the "root cause" of this thing (so that it can be "fixed"). but i don't know if that's possible.

i used to have this desire myself! it drove my activism... and my lack of activism - because i "couldn't figure out the root cause". analysis paralysis is a consequence of this kind of "root cause" thinking.

not to say that there aren't root causes (there may even be a root cause yet!), but that the search for a root cause can be a particular kind of activism failure mode. it's one that i think i was stuck in for way too long.

and to be clear, i DO think it's important to look for root causes, i just don't know if there's a SINGLE root cause.

i think that we are trapped in a tangled web that is

    • a systemic problem (a problem of systems that create outcomes regardless of which individual people are running the systems)
    • that is also a problem of a specific kind of masculinity (NOT a problem that's like something about men themselves as humans)
    • AND ALSO a problem of literal individual egotistical human men lol. (as today, kissinger death day, should remind us all.) sometimes it really does make the difference to remove literally 1 egomaniacal human man from a group situation. and sometimes that one man is fucking impossible to get at (especially since you can't get to them with guillotines anymore).
    • AND THAT ALSO has a bunch of other root causes like colonialism, slavery, human separation from nature, spiritual poverty, devaluing of animal and plant life, devaluing of the land, the concept of 'owning land', racism, heteronormativity, ableism, the legal system that protects corporations, the market system, the belief in and desire for hierarchies, the desire for an ordered and controlled world, "ends justify the means" thinking, and a million other things.

i don't know if there's a way to get free of this web (i certainly feel very wrapped up in it), but i can still use my teeth to bite at the little pieces of web around me & my friends & the little piece of land around me!
