Another great #Civics 101 episode: why we don't talk about reconstruction https://overcast.fm/+2sZyHuia0 This has been a problem at schools even before the culture wars we are now experiencing. This podcast gives a great explanation as to why. TL;DR: all to preserve the American mythos at the expense of diversity, equality of opportunity, and inclusion.
If NCERT Has its Way, the Study of Indian History Will Move Entirely Outside of India
Deleting pages and chapters can only be described as an entirely unintelligent way of reducing content. And the NCERT's choice of deletions explains what its motivations are, writes, Romila Thapar.
Random #Debian Astro package of the week is lightspeed. Light Speed! is an OpenGL-based program which illustrates the effects of special relativity on the appearance of moving objects. When an object accelerates past a few million meters per second, these effects begin to grow noticeable, becoming more and more pronounced as the speed of light is approached. These relativistic effects are viewpoint-dependent, and include shifts in length, object hue, brightness and shape.

The moving object is, by default, a geometric lattice. 3D Studio and LightWave 3D objects may be imported as well. Best of all, the simulator is completely interactive, rendering the exotic distortions in real-time!
In other news, my students routinely give me so much hope for the future of our profession. My attempt to capture some of their unfiltered comments in the wrap-up session of Complete, Safe, Equitable Streets last week:
The tireless education activist and founder of #PenPath , #Matiullah#Wesa has spent more than a month now in #Taliban custody.
Wesa has been working for #education and human rights for the past 15 years, reopening rural #schools, promoting education and encouraging people to send their children to schools #LetAfghanGirlsLearn #Afghanistan

A lab report assignment where the use of generative AI is allowed with appropriate attribution. It’s a class of ~100 students.
Around half the class chose not to use genAI. Around a third cited their use of gen AI.
So about a third of the course have started to upskill and to use genAI in what I believe is a productive / useful way. And that is over a 10-week term – when we started, almost no one in the class had explored the use of genAI beyond ‘playing around over Christmas’.
I could also compare the cited use of genAI and that detected by an ‘AI writing detection model’, and I can confirm that it was sub-optimal.
In the #Rohingya refugee camps of cox's bazar, many #Children are denied access to #education due to financial deprivation. We, rohingya youth are considering providing them with formal education. Doug Ford lied about a huge drop in Ontario Science Centre attendance as part of his justification for moving the attraction from east Toronto to a redeveloped Ontario Place. Reports from the #ScienceCentre itself show that attendance has actually rebounded since the pandemic lockdowns.
"Others have already pointed this out, but the Science Centre really is a textbook case of a #Conservative govt intentionally breaking something so they can point and say “look, this thing sucks!"
#Anki is a popular #flashcard system that helps you learn new info through spaced repetition. And you can build your own deck using popular tools. In his article, Otavio Ehrenberger helps you harness the power of #ChatGPT + #Python to create helpful study cards programmatically:
How to Supercharge Your Studying with Python, Anki, and ChatGPT
I like articles that directly reference and argue (productively, benevolently) with one another. They model effective scientific discourse, which is important for early career scholars to learn. In this case, I see this article and the one it references by Victor Lee as productive discussion about community building and identity definition. Groups must evolve to meet members' needs. https://doi.org/10.1080/10508406.2023.2190717
