How much time is ok to wait after an account is moved from server A to server B, to bring down server A?
My old #Firefish instance is abandoned, just forwarding any request to my new #Mastodon#Glitch instance for the last 2 months, and I want to bring the first down finally.
Oh, hey, I was wondering, are there any fedi instances where one can create an account to practice another language than the one in which they're fluent? I don't want to bother a foreign language server, but would love to practice with folks who wouldn't be bothered by it. I've seen folks asking similar questions before but never seen the answer. #FediHelp#BoostsWelcome
OK I'm obviously doing something wrong so some #fediHelp in #probability would help here. Say I have an automaton whose cells can be in any of three states S1, S2, S3 with probability p1, p2, p3 (p1+p2+p3=1). The probability of a cell c changing from S1 to S2 depends on the neighbors being in state S2. c stays in state S1 if it's not “infected” by any of the neighbors. Say p12(c, n) is the probability of c moving from S1 to S2 if n is S2. What's the total probability of c staying in S1?
Different approach I'm considering: the probability of c being infected by n is k12(c, n) = p1(c)*p2(n)p12(c, n). So the probability of staying S1 is the complement from all neighbors \prod_n(1 - k12(c, n)), but that can't be, as it can be higher than p1(c). Should it be p1(c)\prod_n(1 - k12(c, n))? But then am I not account for p1(c) too many times? I'm obviously missing something, and being out of my element don't even know where to look things up.
Kann irgendjemand erkennen, was das für ein Baum ist, und mir den Namen verraten? Blühte im März in merkbarer Anzahl in Kapstadt. (Nicht diesen März, ist schon etwas her...)
Can anybody identify this tree and give me the name? It was flowering in March in Cape Town and was quite common there (not this march...)
To add to the furor of this week's skullduggery in "Nobody Catches A Break"--what's the substitute for the #Jetpack plugin? Only had it for the security whatchamacallit, and it would be nice to continue having it with some other plugin :P
Create three lists: "CUR: All", "CUR: Flipboard", "CUR: Newsmast".
(CUR = CURated / CURation)
Search for "Flipboard" and "Newsmast" (Flipboard accounts share the same icon, Newsmast accounts share the same icon as well.)
Follow the accounts you're interested in. (It's by topic.)
Add each of those accounts to your "CUR: All" list. And to its respective platform list: "CUR: Flipboard" or "CUR: Newsmast".
Switch your "Home" view to "CUR: All", "CUR: Flipboard", or "CUR: Newsmast".
Another way of doing it is by topic:
CUR: Nature
CUR: Current Events
CUR: Programming
Or, by region:
CUR: Local
CUR: Asia-Pacific
CUR: Africa
Adjust it to your needs.
In the Mastodon family, you can set the list to not show up in your "Home" timeline. This way, you can still see the posts from other people you follow without it being filled with curated content boosts.
Benefits of following curation accounts:
You don't have to follow every single account.
> Usually, accounts share other topics which you probably are not interested in. Curated lists filter these topics for you.
You will discover content and people to follow.
> Both Flipboard and Newsmast boosts/reshares the original post. You see the original source/account and interact with them directly.
> You can then choose who you want to follow directly so you can see more of their content and interests, and build a friendly relationship with them.
It becomes possible to only follow 10 accounts ever, yet consume hundreds of content and information.
This way, you can avoid following hundreds of accounts which will only make your "Home" timeline confusing; and more likely, you'll miss what matters most for you because of so many posts from so many accounts.
I hope it helps you! Welcome to the Fediverse #SNS !
P.s. If you're using an awesome Fediverse software or platform besides Mastodon, the steps are similar, if not exactly the same.
Since my memory is failing and Google isn't any better, I'm going to #askFedi for some #fediHelp finding the title and author of a #SciFi#ShortStory featuring a #timeLoop: “they” suddenly appear wish spaceships on the edges of the Solar System and with no warning wipe out the outer colonies. Earth quickly sets up a space navy to face the unknown enemy, but as the enemy approaches Earth it stops fighting and is easily defeated.
I got a no-name thermal-print toy camera (named "Q5"), with no obvious tech specs to look for. Anybody got one and opened the case or reverse-engineered the app?
It has "wireless printing", where it shows a QR code pointing to https://www.pgyer.com/UNhf - with bloated YinTiBao apps for Android and iOS. It does not have WiFi, but appears as a #Bluetooth#BLE device named "BQ05".
What's the easiest way to self-host a single-user Mastodon instance? (Also interested in other fediverse platforms that may be easier to host/manage). Thanks!!!

I'm not seeing "Share On" icons on news articles and such for Mastodon/Fedi, except very very rarely. Is this because of the limitless variations in server configuration? Is it not necessary because copying a link is just as easy? Or is it because the Fedi didn't start getting the little attention it's received lately, until only lately and still remains relatively obscure for most folks?
Oczywiście w razie potrzeby, zachęcamy do kontaktu z administracją naszej instancji.
Hey #webdesign#webdev folks, I'm looking for an example of an HTML “Style guide" page for a website. I've seen some blogs that sport this in the past but can't for the life of me find one again or Google for it. It's basically just a simple page on a site that has examples of all (or most) HTML elements and how they are styled for that site. I could just make one myself but would prefer to boostrap the process by getting a pre-made one to start and tweak from there. Thanks!

It might just be that I'm more proficient analyzing and working around #GPU quirks (happens, when you do mostly #GPGPU for more than a decade) than #CPU, but there's so many weird things happening on this machine that I don't know where to start from.
Just to mention one: why is it that the performance per core when using #OpenMP drops by 40% when switching from 1 to 2 threads, but only when using OMP_PROC_BIND=close and not when using OMP_PROC_BIND=spread? If anything I'd expect the reverse.
And then adding more threads gives me almost perfect scaling, at least up to 16 threads, before dropping again … WTH is happening here? Honestly wouldn't mind some #fediHelp with suggestions on what to look at/for … #HPC#askFedi do your magic!
