While walking around Old San Juan, we came upon a public wedding about to happen. The groom, in the left photo, looks anxious, and the bride, in the right photo, is smiling confidently.

A wedding in a public plaza in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. The bride, in a white gown in the center of the photo, stands between two large white columns. In the background are green trees and bushes, and there is pavement in the foreground.

Constructed between 1539 and 1790, Castillo San Felipe del Morro greatly increased in size from a small promontory with a single cannon to a six-level fortress that would intimidate even the bravest attackers

Massive invasive snakes are on the loose and spreading in Puerto Rico.

Vox reports: "Runaway pets — and possibly some zoo escapees — have fueled the spread of invasive snakes across the island. It’s an environmental catastrophe in the making."

APROPOS OF EVERYTHING
you know what's interesting about the Dorothea Lange @DorotheaLange pics of #poverty in the United States? since she focused on migrant workers and small farmers, many of these people owned cars and/or (mobile) houses.
https://mastodon.social/@DorotheaLange@mastodon.ozioso.online/112457564915633018

just a reminder that poverty is always relative to the amounts of wealth and resources hoarded by the oligarchy, not by whatever material possessions are owned by the poor.

i like following the @DorotheaLange bot because it reminds me to look into what LOC has about Puerto Rico's . today was reminded of PRERA
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puerto_Rico_Reconstruction_Administration#The_Puerto_Rico_Emergency_Relief_Administration_(PRERA)
and of Jack Delano's work in Puerto Rico which was, much like Lange's, to document La Isla's poverty.

here's a 1941 pic of sugar cane workers from Río Piedras. notice the woman's shirt. instead of flour sacks,

Puerto Rican music is a blend of salsa, reggaeton and the country's own bomba style. Here's a Tiny Desk concert from El Laberinto del Coco, a collective of 14 singers and musicians, led by Hector "Coco" Barez. "Barez's vision is to dig deep into the African roots of call-and-response with four vocalists and four horn players to remind us throughout its performance of the power of bomba to create community," writes producer Felix Contreras, who is the co-host of NPR's Alt.Latino.

the only US citizens Americans should be taking protesting cues from are PUERTORRIQUEÑOS.

why? Puerto Rico is bound, muzzled & knee-capped by the USA constitution YET our people took to the streets, IN THE ISLAND & WORLDWIDE, and changed the government in 12 days of non-stop protests.

PROTESTS WORK.

so much so, USA media wants you to forget those 12 days of protests when writing of the global unrests of 2019.

WE ARE MORE AND WE HAVE NO FEAR;
somos más y no tenemos miedo.

a show of protests signs from those 12 days, from left to right: 1. FUERA POLICÍA; police get out the governor was infamous for his abuse of power and treating police as his private army 2. ABAJO EL PATRIARCADO; down with patriarchy protests had been happening for ages en La Isla but what ignited the 12 days of rage were leaks of chatlogs where Roselló & his cronies slandered and slurred many activists and at one point even joked about throwing some of them in jail so they could get raped. 3. BLACK & WHITE PUERTO RICAN FLAG is both our distress flag and the symbol of the independence national movement that was led by Don Pedro Albizu Campos and which was a straight offshoot of our abolitionist movement (and hence, led by Afroboricuas). 4. SOMOS MÁS Y NO TENEMOS MIEDO we are more and we have no fear.
