“This is a fight for freedom, the fundamental freedom to make decisions about one’s own body & not have their government tell them what they’re supposed to do,” the VP said.
“& it happened just as Donald #Trump intended. Now, present day because of Donald Trump, more than 20 states have #AbortionBans, more than 20 #TrumpAbortionBans. & today, this very day at the stroke of midnight, another Trump #AbortionBan went into effect here in #Florida. As of this morning, 4 million #women in this state woke up w/fewer reproductive freedoms than they had last night. This is the new reality under a Trump #abortion ban.”
>2 decades ago, the shocking results of a major women’s #health study challenged the safety of menopause #hormone medication, & overnight, millions of #women & their #doctors abandoned the drugs….
Now, a long-term follow-up of the #WomensHealth Initiative (WHI)…found that for many younger menopausal women—under 60—the benefits…outweigh the risks for short-term treatment of symptoms, incl’g hot flashes & night sweats.
The new analysis, published in JAMA, shows that younger #women starting #menopause & experiencing symptoms can take hormone treatments for several years w/a lower likelihood of adverse effects.
“Women in early menopause w/bothersome symptoms should not be afraid to take #HormoneTherapy to treat them, & clinicians should not be afraid to prescribe them,” said JoAnn Manson, chief of the division of preventive medicine at Brigham & Women’s Hospital & the paper’s 1st author.
A landmark study that scared women & doctors
The importance of the #WHI & its impact on #WomensHealth can’t be overstated. The study enrolled >160k postmenopausal #women between the ages of 50 & 79. But in 2002, part of the study’s #menopause hormone trial was abruptly stopped after monitoring data suggested that women in the hormone group had an increased #health risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, pulmonary embolism & breast cancer.
The results disrupted #medical care for millions of #women …, many of whom had been advised by doctors that the drugs not only relieved symptoms, but also offered long-term protection against heart attacks, which was widely believed…. The sudden about-face…meant that scores of baby boomer & GenX women were forced to navigate the vexing symptoms of #menopause —incl’g hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia & mood disturbances—w/o the benefit of highly effective #HormoneTreatments.
Later, it became clear that the design of the study, which included large numbers of older #women, may have skewed the results. The risks were seen largely among older women, long past #menopause, who would not normally need to use the drugs for symptoms. Younger women in the study seemed to fare better.
Tickets are selling out, and stadiums are filling up -- but some places such as 680 News rarely, if ever, cover women's hockey (the PWHL). They need to hear from listeners. Let's support #women's sports. It took a LONG time for the PWHL to form, and they had to face a lot of prejudices. Feel free to use this to help draft your note to either 680 or other stations.
"Like many others, I've been watching the #PWHL and noticed 680 News almost never covers the games. Games are selling out, stadiums are filling up, people can't get tickets (I couldn't get tickets for the upcoming Toronto game at Maple Leaf Gardens). There is a serious following. Please try to include more of their games -- as well as some of the other women's sports in the station's coverage."
"As of midnight, an archaic near-total abortion ban went into effect in Florida. Donald Trump is to blame.
The state now outlaws nearly all abortions after 6 weeks, which is essentially a complete ban since a majority of women don't even know they’re pregnant that early on."
"Trump and the GOP are doing irreparable damage by putting women in a spot where they have lost control over the right to keep their bodies from harm.
This ban has nothing to do with medical concerns. It has everything to do with our lawmakers pandering to religious ideologues who fund Republicans. Nothing more.
Trump and his MAGA cult only care about money, power, and controlling women."
The ban, which took effect on Wednesday, was part of Gov. Ron #DeSantis’s push into cultural #conservatism. But Florida #politics is rarely that simple.
"A six-week abortion ban went into effect on Wednesday in Florida, cutting off access to the procedure before many people know they’re pregnant and leveling the south-eastern United States’ last stronghold for abortion rights."
"As part of an extensive interview with Time Magazine, former President Donald Trump expanded on what abortion access would look like in the United States in a potential second term. Trump laid out a dystopian vision where pregnant women could be placed under state surveillance and then subjected to criminal punishment for any transgressions."
Meanwhile, in Saudi Arabia, their view of feminism continues to equate support for women's right with terrorism.
As always there is talk of a move towards better rights in Saudi, but its hard to square this narrative of improvement of the plight of women, with the continued judicial actions against females who are promoting such social change via social media.
What emerged in 2 interviews w/ #Trump, & conversations w/more than a dozen of his closest advisers & confidants, were the outlines of an imperial presidency that would reshape #America & its role in the world. To carry out a #deportation operation designed to remove >11M people from the country…he would be willing to build migrant detention camps [#ConcentrationCamps] & deploy the #US#military…
#Trump would let red states monitor #women’s #pregnancies & prosecute those who violate #AbortionBans. He would, at his personal discretion, withhold funds appropriated by #Congress, acc/to top advisers. He would be willing to fire a US Attorney who doesn’t carry out his order to prosecute someone, breaking w/a tradition of independent #law enforcement that dates from America’s founding.
Other professors used to take me to snacks when I was single, so I was well aware that hostesses were mostly divorced or single mothers. Mimi sheds light on the nature of snacks by saying that #Japan has a dark side. Regarding the #social#inequality that Greg mentions, Mimi clarifies that there is a double standard whereby men can go to snacks openly, but it is shameful for #women to work in them. Now I'm a family man, but I sympathize with such women, who would otherwise have to #work for close to the minimum wage.

Women should be included in decisions on the protection of human rights in the climate crisis, say researchers
Eighty percent of climatic migrants are women and children. This figure means that a new international legal framework is required to protect human rights by adding gender-sensitive measures to policies and legislation
Shoegaze is currently going through a revival, fueled by TikTok love, a wave of exciting new bands and reunions by legends. Luckily, says Stereogum's Lesa Hannah, some of the women from the original era are still making music. She chatted with Lush co-founder Emma Anderson, Deb Googe of My Bloody Valentine, and Slowdive's Rachel Goswell, about the return of shoegaze, making music in middle age, and hot flashes.
