Spent some time hanging out with some blue #damselflies at the lake before coming back home 😊
Damselflies have existed since the Late #Jurassic period & found on every continent except Antarctica. Presence of damselflies & the larger dragonflies, indicates a healthy #ecosystem.
First and foremost, we had more than 20 wonderful participants at #YoMos2024, ranging from Bachelor- to #PhD- level #students all modelling #ecological systems. Everyone had the chance to present their projects and methods and we had vivid question+discussion rounds afterwards. Although #YoMos seems like a niche group already, we heard about a bandwidth of methods including mechanistic #eco(-evo)-models, #SDMs, #climate and vegeation models, network models, #Machinelearning, #AI and much more.
And yes, #WoodMeadows are my new jam. I’ll be writing more about them as a model for human activity creating biodiversity, in a democratic and engaging way. I am, to put it mildly, quite excited.
How do we live together in #nature? Wood meadows, a managed & productive #ecosystem, can achieve this balance, a model of human activity benefitting #biodiversity.
For research, I’m going to the 14th European Conference on #Ecological Restoration this August in #Estonia, where the wood meadows are the most biodiverse sites in the world.

Me & my hiking friend saw only one other person out in the rains & trails, yesterday. Once you go deeper into the forest, the rain doesn't fall through the trees' canopy as much. The air smelled so good!
this is an excellent overview of ecological anarchism today
“Those who feel optimistic about technological-progression and what the expansion of the technosphere has done, I notice, typically are more inclined towards social-ecology and the socialist ideologies that seek to conserve the structures and industrialist practices of this culture, through ‘sustainable’ and ‘eco-friendly’ technologies. For myself and what seems like most of the techno-pessimistic individuals I have encountered; the revolt against technology seems rooted upon the ground of recognising it as despotic, mediating and ecologically-violent.”
for myself, the latter perspective remains our only option.
We can thank Lady Bird Johnson for raising awareness, after she left the Whitehouse, about the #ecological benefits of native plants and wildflowers. #gardening
New paper alert! I'm delighted to be able to present the first article published from our joint project between the @UniOfExeter Environment and Sustainability Institute and Department of Physics and Astronomy, modelling #artificiallight#ALAN, #lightpollution, and its #ecological impacts.
If you have not #read 『Parable of the Sower』by Octavia Butler; it has never been a more perfect time to read this sci-fi #book Published 30 years ago, in
'93 and set in '24
Set in an #America facing #ecological collapse, massive climate migration; in a way few other #scifi novels succeed, it now reads as strangely prophetic
Her deep understanding of a broad the sciences, brilliant prose, and complex world create a picture with depth and each layer finely crafted
50th inaugural lecture published by University of Groningen Press 🥳
"Landscape naturally. Ecological landscape history in contemporary perspective" (only in Dutch) by Prof. Bert Groenewoudt is the 50th inaugural lecture published as a book by University of Groningen Press (UGP).
The printed version is included in the library collection; the digital version appears #openaccess
Since #YoMos is not on Mastodon, you will get the advertisement from me :D if you are a #Bachelor/ # Master/ #PhD level student of #ecological#modelling or you supervise any, this is perfect! You get to present your project in a conference-like setting, but your audience are your peers! Big bonus for #mathematical modelling this year: The awesome @KorinnaAllhoff will give a keynote, and I will probably give a workshop on #pattern#formation in #networks! The #UNESCO site is one of Vietnam's most popular #TouristDestinations, with more than seven million people visiting its blue-green waters & rainforest-topped limestone islands last year.
Look; if you don’t support #LandBack, you probably don’t understand what is actually being proposed. #Everything I have read and heard has been very reasonable and fair. The only folks talking about revenge campaigns are #WhiteSupremacists trying to drum up #fears. The movement is co-axial with a lot of the #ideas in the #Ecological and Green movements. It’s a #decolonizing measure. It has the potential to benefit lots of #people, including non-Natives, given that many of the proposals would dramatically improve air and water quality and increase access to food across economic class lines. These folks have good ideas. I am asking you, politely, to just, take a look
Last week, the #Canadian Wild Pig #Research Project published a map image on its social media page showing locations of wild pig sightings, along with the question: “What is the risk of wild pigs to the mountain parks in #Alberta and #BritishColumbia?”
#XMPP a 20+ years #open and #standard#protocol, boasts a minimal, well-conceived core feature set. It enables diverse software to intercommunicate without reinventing the wheel. It has evolved over time, maintaining backward compatibility, and allows for low-resource implementations. Suitable for any conceivable use case, it advocates for no indiscriminate resource consumption. XMPP stands as one of the communication protocols most aligned with the #ecological challenges of today and tomorrow.
