Tomorrow, watch Japan's attempt to land their SLIM spacecraft on the moon! The livestream link is below, and the landing will be at approximately 10:20 am ET on Friday, January 19. If they succeed, they will be the fifth country (U.S., Soviet Union, China, India) to accomplish this feat!

Hi all! I'm still in a newsletter subscription push mode -- with the demise of the bird app, it's gotten really hard to get the word out about projects like this that don't have an internal algorithm to help people find it.

If you like , , , or just want to support a woman of color doing STEM stuff -- please subscribe! Ad Astra is a weekly newsletter that tells you what's going on in space science and spaceflight.

I want to buy a pair of Airpods Max for some travel coming up (I have a pair already I love but I gave them to my husband because he uses them a lot more) but I also don't want to get something now and then have something new announced in September. Does anyone know if there are credible rumors about new Airpods Max coming soon?

There will be more information in the hours and days to come, but it’s official: Intuitive Machines successfully landed their spacecraft on the moon

I interviewed Michelle Yeoh a few years ago about and I mentioned offhand that I'd written an article about what seeing her use her accent on the bridge of a starship meant to me.

She stopped and said "Wait, that was YOU?"

And then proceeded to talk about how much that article had meant to HER and how it contributed to the success of the show.

I can't think about it without crying.

Context for the Starship explosion, if anyone wants it:

It’s not actually a failure. It would be better if it hadn’t exploded, of course, but most of us expected it to explode. Rocketry is just a controlled explosion.

Reminder: As we start getting closer to the April eclipse, places are going to start selling out of eclipse glasses (some already have!) I highly recommend you order some soon, and please don’t just get them off eBay or Amazon, fakes are a problem.

India's Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft is scheduled to attempt a soft landing at the moon's south pole around 8:34 am ET. If successful, they would be the fourth country to land on the moon and the first to do so at the south pole. Follow the livestream here:

Press conference: SLIM has been communicating with Earth and is recieving commands accurately. The spacecraft is responding in a normal way. However, the solar cell is not generating electricity at this point in time. Currently using battery power.

If luck is on our side, there will be a moon landing attempt on February 22. If Intuitive Machines succeeds, this will be the first U.S. spacecraft to soft land on the moon since the Apollo missions.

There have been a LOT of crashed moon landers over the past few years. Why did Russia's Luna-25 fail, and why is it so HARD to land on the moon? And what do we think will happen to India's Chandrayaan-3 -- the Vikram lander is scheduled to attempt a landing tomorrow.

A few people have pointed out that it's worth mentioning that my newsletter is on Beehiiv, not on Substack.

I chose a service that doesn't platform hate speech, and the tradeoff was I gave up on the other service's internal algorithm and tools for helping people find your publication.

Hence why I'm doing this push. Beehiiv is GREAT, they have been really good to me, and I very much recommend their service.

Boeing Starliner will not launch before Friday, May 10, and it may push into next week. The issue is a valve that controls liquid oxygen pressure on the upper stage of the rocket. It was humming/oscillating, and they need to examine it to see if it needs to be replaced.

If it doesn't, launch will be no earlier than Friday. If it does need to be replaced (which means the rocket needs to be rolled back), we're likely looking at launch dates into next week.
