I know language is fluid and I try not to be overly prescriptivist, but I am never going to be able to accept “learnings” as a valid noun. I’ve tried, but I just can’t, and I need to accept that about myself.
@Meyerweb I'm with you, but how do you feel about “teachings?” After remembering that word, which I'm OK with, I'm torn about “learnings.” #Language#Usage
Has anyone written about how textual generative AI feels strangely close to toxic masculinity in some respects? The absolute confidence in everything stated, the lack of understanding of the consequences of getting that confidence wrong for important questions, the semi-gaslighty feeling when it “corrects” itself when you call it out on something. It so often feels like talking to someone one would despise and avoid in “real life.” I’m curious if anyone did some writing on this.
I’ve seen speculation about “this is because the models were trained by white men on data from Reddit and Facebook” but I wonder if this is an issue of the training corpus, or is it just the intrinsic nature of LLMs? Is it possible to create a “hesitant, honest” LLM if you wanted to? I feel naïve asking this way, but that’s the part I don’t fully understand yet.
@Binder@mwichary "Mansplaining as a service":
AI generated texts sound like a schoolboy caught red-handed on a unfamiliar topic, just rambling everything that comes to his mind, making up facts, in order to get away having no real understanding of the topic, hoping that the person listening does not pay attention or is even more clueless.
Here are the much anticipated 10 images taken by the Euclid "Dark Matter Hunter" space telescope.
The images and accompanying papers were presented today at a gathering by the Euclid Consortium. We have seen the first image before.
These are part of the Euclid Early Release Observation program. The first results from Euclid’s wide and deep main surveys will take until fall, first cosmology papers at least until late 2025.
These papers are not part of #ESAEuclid's core cosmology mission, but explicitly of a pre-survey science showcase. So no cosmology in them! We'll have to wait until 2026 for that.
But 100s of non-cosmology science papers can be expected until then.
@knud "by", Knud, not "until"; the great mystery of that strange German mistranslation continues – I shall make it my mission to eradicate it when I'm back 💪
Of course, if you had said "there will be a constant stream of non-cosmology science papers until then", it would have been correct 😉
Horrible when those in charge make decisions that make your life much harder for purely selfish reasons without giving a crap about your situation, isn't it. Just awful.
Amused at how Altman helped himself to a woman who denied him multiple times, because he was fond of her*, and despite the fact that she was literally the only person in recent history to sue Disney and win - and that no one else in his circle tried to dissuade him (or had enough pull or made enough effort to be successful).
Says a lot about the people at the helm of the "AI revolution".
@tess Scarlett Johansson is a rich, very well connected, and famous personality. If that's how Sam Altman treats her, imagine how he'll treat common people like artists and writers, from whom he has already stolen. This man is a menace to society. He doesn’t understand meaning of words “no” or asking for consent. He is a bully and high on hype train. I really hope every artist sue him and win against this bully.
Alright, it's official. The dangerous & misguided Kids Online Safety Act (#KOSA) will go to a "mark up" vote in the House Energy & Commerce Committee this morning, Thursday, May 23. THIS IS JUST A SUBCOMMITTEE VOTE. WE CAN STILL STOP OR FIX THIS BILL! https://www.stopkosa.com
The latest version of #APRA
seems to contain language from #COPPA 2.0. While we think the best way to protect kids is to address the fundamental harms of surveillance capitalism by passing a privacy bill that protects everyone, we don't have the same censorship concerns w/ COPPA
We're organizing actions today to ensure that the voices of LGBTQ youth, frontlines reproductive rights groups, and human rights experts are heard in the hearing. You can do your part by CALLING YOUR HOUSE REP AND SENATOR using stopkosa.com and spreading the word!
@davidallengreen thank you. Statement by Penny Mordaunt later apparently. I know this is part of the normal process, but it seems crazy that so many 100s of hours of Parliamentary & civil service time on some bills will be permanently lost. Another argument for fixed terms?
A bit of a strange day for me, carpentry wise. I finished framing the floor for the addition and hit pause. I went in to see what I’d take on and was suddenly overwhelmed by it all. Realizing there’s still so much to do, and realizing it’ll be worse come sealift when so much arrives and I’ll be racing winter. And overcome with the feeling I’m just not good enough.
I am, and this will pass. But two days in and I just gave up on the day.
It's amazing to me how we're watching the tech world fall apart at the feet of monetization and AI and whatever other bullshit of the week, and it's all exactly the consequences that the Free Software folks have been warning about and talking about for decades.
But the free software folks are, often, aggressive ideological purists or incredibly gatekeep-y, and free software as a movement has been seriously hampered by both of those things, and also by the same monetization push that is eating everything else.
We built our entire world on computers. We embedded them in every facet of our lives. I've spent my entire life With The Machine.
@ajroach42@rose_alibi The behaviour that was acceptable 20 years ago still appears to be acceptable to some folk now. The language used may have changed but the attitude hasn't.
Then folks wonder why they can't get people using FOSS. Like why would anyone take abuse from a stranger about their software requirements? Or abuse from a maintainer?
Why would we recommend those communities to our chosen ones? Why would we set them up to take that abuse and distain?
@mwl My Thursday is going better than that thankfully 😬
Considering your martial arts background he was probably the one in the most danger but seriously glad you (and the other guy) did not engage and remain unscathed.
A guy I used to box with at the gym sometimes who also taught self defense said the most important self defense skills are psychological: maintaining composure and de-escalation (this doesn't mean capitulation of course). "Mind games" can be surprisingly effective in minimizing physical conflict, and my boxing friend liked to use them to great effect during sparring too 😂 .
@mwl Maybe having the confidence you can handle violence if it happens may make you less scared, and therefore both more effective at delicate de-escalation tactics and at violence if de-escalation fails?
