Suspension on my laptop (closing the lid) causes Wifi to not be available.

Hi, this is a long lasting problem that I didn't really manage to fix when I started using linux (Mint, Cinnamon). But now that I've been using it regularly for half a year and I have more experience in fiddling around, I'm trying to get it resolved....

As a macOS user, my journey began with trying to make my DE look & work like , but with the added features a Linux DE provides - first , then , finally settling on as my favorite.

Then @thelinuxEXP released his video about bad UX design where he trashed the concept of a menu to launch apps & demonstrated how GNOME’s approach is superior… 🤔

My (mostly) stock GNOME immersion begins now.

I just installed a PCIe Wireless card in my Thelio, but realize I have NO idea how to check if it's actually using it.

How can I check which wifi card is in use on , i'm running if that matters

This week, in our #Linux and #OpenSource News video, we have more work on HDR support, #Ubuntu improving their PPA system, and a security flaw in #KeePass, the open source password manager, plus #cinnamon being adopted by more distros, and a new XFCE spin.

Let’s dive in!

So, I finally got around to installing Professional Edition in a virtual machine and chose the lightest options possible throughout the install process. It still forces 7 apps into the pinned apps portion of the start menu which were completely unsolicited. They can be uninstalled, but still...

Did I mention this was the Professional Edition?

On a good note, the UI strikes the perfect balance between and . We could use a desktop environment like this in .

Ubuntu Cinnamon can easily be styled to look just like Mint.

Ubuntu Cinnamon 23.04 (Lunar Lobster)

Ubuntu Cinnamon 23.10 (Mantic Minotaur) Daily Build

Ubuntu Cinnamon 20.04.5 LTS

I personally remove the snaps, add flatpak, and that's it. Once you've styled it, you wouldn't know the difference.

Goodbye Fedora, welcome Debian.
First impressions: I had to reinstall Cinnamon desktop a few times because it failed to start after login. But other than that it seems pretty good. Will see how it goes.

My general issue with Gnome is I cannot always find the apps I want to use. They are not always viewable on the Windows 8-like menu.

"But... but... You can search for it."

That works some of the time, but not all the time. And you are also assuming I can recall exactly what the name of the app is too, and how it is spelled, because not all the apps use English titles.

Give me a nicely organized menu like the likes of Cinnamon, KDE, or LXQT, for example.

Gnome users remind me of a cult.

"Is the website not loading right?

Well, it must be a KDE, Budgie, Lxqt, or Cinnamon issue, you should install Gnome."

🙄

Gnome is not the be all, above all, to fix all. But their user base is so overbearing and sometimes toxic, that as soon as they learn someone is not using Gnome, they point to that as the possible cause.

I'm not joking, by the way, they'll even claim a 3rd party web issue on not using Gnome. 🙄

A deep-dive look at the latest Linux Mint LMDE 6 Faye BETA release:

https://tiffybelle.vivaldi.net/2023/09/20/deep-dive-linux-mint-lmde-6-faye-review/

In this blog post, I opine on why the Edition of appeals to me over the main Mint release.

I also take an in-depth look at what the latest LMDE 6 has to offer, from installation to setting up after the initial boot.

I had great fun trying the new LMDE out!

Darf bleiben.

On 11, the whole system along with was taking 500 MB of RAM. On Debian 12, the system takes 850 MB of RAM. On Trixie/Sid-unstable, it takes 1.3 GB. I honestly don't know what they're shoving in it.

With and , it takes 1.6 GB on idle. Since when Cinnamon, a gnome2/gtk3 fork takes (or should take) as much RAM as Gnome4/gtk4? Something's amiss.

I love the bing daily wallpapers, I especially love that they seem to always have a related wallpaper if it's a UN recognised 'day'. For example, today is Bee Day!

I have a script that can automatically download and set the bing daily wallpaper on my gitlab https://gitlab.com/tripplehelix/bing-wallpaper
