History shows us that large technology corporations like Microsoft, Google, and Facebook will only ever see open ecosystems as sources of value to enclose and exploit. I have less than zero interest in helping one of the chief architects of the modern Web's consolidation continue their efforts.
The Web is best when it's diverse, diffuse, and homegrown. Motley will not federate with any Meta instance, because Facebook is not welcome in my community.
Indeed. In 2023 if your #fediadmin thinks that anything “cool” is gonna come out of #Facebook / #Instagram federating with are either too young or unbelievably naive or outright dumb and may sell you out.
You have been warned.
While it may be inevitable that they co-opt parts of the fediverse, you still have a choice in being a part of this. Demand your admins to approach this with extreme suspicion. Ditto for all other corporations.
When it comes to taking any action against an instance, it's based almost entirely on whether there's a good-faith attempt to moderate harmful behavior on their platform.
We already have more than adequate evidence that Meta is either unable or unwilling to ensure their spaces are safe and inclusive.
For this reason I'm more than happy to commit to blocking them and their products.
Seeing as how we're all speaking out, I am moderately against @fosstodon joining #FediPact. I could be persuaded still the other way, but it feels like a fundamentalist impulse, responding in fear to the threat of impurity. As a religious person, I'm maybe more sensitive to fundamentalism than non-religious people. Don't like it, can't support it.
@fosstodon Aaaaaaaand the #FediPact crew bullying @dansup off the Fediverse is evidence of the fundamentalist tendencies I was worried about. I don't truck with bullies. No longer moderately against the FediPact.
Still trying to make up my mind about rumored federation with Facebook/Meta.
On the one hand, I have a faint naive hope that this could be the Trojan horse that ends walled gardens forever & makes #interoperability the rule.
On the other, #BigTech has history & deep experience at enshittifying everything it touches. The proverb about “He who sups with the Devil should use a long spoon.” There may not be a spoon long enough to deal with #Facebook.
I'm always going to use the term Facebook as I do not accept the company name for various reasons.
Zuckerberg isn't some tech who sold out and Facebook "accidentally" became the data mining nightmare that it is. Zuckerberg ALWAYS reduced us to objects to be measured. He showed us exactly who he was all those years ago with facesmash.
I usually avoid making my position on topics of emotional debate and politics known (besides "starring"). It usually doesn't change anyone's mind and is wasted energy. However...
The whole mastdn.social (half a dozen unrelated domains) vs mastodon.art situation has a silver lining: It's the perfect opportunity to identify and block a lot of literal nazis, (crypto-)fascists, corporate apologist, equivocalists, and other dangers to a free and open society which crawl out of the woodwork in its wake.
Divinity save us from people who think waiting for evidence of Leopards eating OUR faces is a fair and balanced way of dealing with face-eating Leopards. 😒🐆**
I feel like I'm seeing a lot of people not seeming to realize this....everything you post with "public" visibility is "public". Completely. Check it out: go to https://tams.tech/api/v1/timelines/public and you can see my instance's "Federated" timeline.
My instance isn't special, it's just stock mastodon. Log out and try it on your own instance, you'll see.
I'm really asking here, I'd like to do what's best for my instance. If that's taking the #Fedipact that's what we'll do, but I don't want to just follow the crowd for the sake of following, I want to understand why! #mastoadmin
Does anyone have a list of admins reactions to the #meta talks by any chance?
Particularly interested in those who've already announced they're going to block the Meta instance from the go
There's now a #FediPact tag, and a website collecting signatories thanks to @vantablack https://fedipact.online/
You can also follow the progress via the dedicated FediDB tracker https://fedidb.org/current-events/anti-meta-fedi-pact
set up by @dansup
(a thankless work, apparently, given how many of you are harassing him. JFC, people, if you are unable to debate and criticize without resorting to harassment and insults, maybe consider that Twitter is better suited for you than the Fediverse?)
