On the 1st day of #testimony in #HunterBiden’s federal #gun trial, #jurors heard his audio of his memoir, where he recounted his #drug use in graphic detail. A federal prosecutor told jurors “no one is above the #law,” & defense said the he did not “knowingly” lie when filling out forms to purchase a weapon.
The #FBI agent said they were able to confirm that the laptop taken from the repair shop was #HunterBiden’s partly from his iCloud data, which contained an invoice from the shop [wait - an invoice for the repair was on the laptop before the work was done? Remember, he never picked it up]
#SCOTUS gave a win to the #NRA in its #FreeSpeech dispute w/a #NY state ofcl it accused of coercing banks & insurers to avoid doing business w/the influential #gun advocacy group.
The justices, in a 9-0 decision, threw out a lower court's ruling that dismissed the NRA's 2018 lawsuit against Maria Vullo, a fmr superintendent of NY's Dept of Financial Services. The #NRA claimed that Vullo unlawfully retaliated against it following a #MassShooting in which 17 people were killed at a HS in #Parkland, FL.
A man serving 55 years has filed a motion to overturn his conviction, arguing that the state prosecuted him for giving a #gun to a drive-by shooter even though another man had already pleaded guilty to giving the same gun to the shooter.
The Elkhart case is another in a line of instances across the US in which prosecutors have been accused of presenting contradictory accounts in court, depending on the defendant they’re trying.
At least 29 men have been sentenced to death in the US since the 1970s in cases where prosecutors were accused of presenting opposing versions of the truth, according to a search of legal cases.
👏🏻👏🏻“Sale of firearms on internet & at gun shows in US will in future be subj to mandatory #BackgroundChecks, DOJ said as it announced a “historic” new action to keep weapons out of hands of criminals.
"Almost 25 years after suing the firearms industry for failing to prevent illegal gun sales, the northwestern Indiana city of Gary won a critical victory last fall when a judge ordered gun manufacturers to hand [over] years of production and sales records.
As someone who almost always open-carries guns I must say, the one thing I dont like is how certain people assume your a republican or pro-trump when they see it. Today I had an experience with a tow truck driver who was overtly racist the whole ride home and I suspect its because he saw my gun and made some assumptions.
Pro-guns is probably the only topic where I align with the right at all really.
@freemo These are good points I suppose…the anti free speech arguments I’ve heard from the left are that “hate speech isn’t free speech” and “hate speech is violence”, which frames “hate speech” as something that isn’t or should not be protected by the #1A from what I can tell.
A #Manhattan#jury found 3 top execs of the National Rifle Association liable in a lengthy #civil#trial that focused on alleged corruption & the misspending of millions of dollars.
Longtime NRA leader #WayneLaPierre, a key architect in the nonprofit's hardline #gun rights agenda who stepped down as CEO last month, was central to #NY state's case.
Jurors found that #LaPierre "violated his statutory obligation to discharge the duties of his position in good faith."
They concluded that he had caused ~$5.4M worth of #harm to the nonprofit group's finances — though they also found that LaPierre had already repaid roughly $2M.
LaPierre sat in the courtroom looking on as the #jury#verdict was read.
The execs were accused of misappropriating & mismanaging funds donated to the #gun rights group's members. Acc/to #NYAG [hero] #LetitiaJames, who brought the lawsuit, their actions led to "the loss of >$64M in just 3 years."
During the 6-wk #trial, state lawyers alleged that #LaPierre had spent >$11M for private flights & approved $135M in #NRA contracts in exchange for yacht access & free trips to the Bahamas, Greece & other vacation hotspots.
The shootings in Missouri today are another clarion call: every state in the U.S. can and should enact statutes to ground civil suits against irresponsible #gun manufacturers and sellers. The gun industry is fighting these statutes in court. I explain and defend the desirability, lawfulness, and constitutionality of such statutes in this article, forthcoming in Yale Law Journal Forum. Neither #PLCAA nor the #SecondAmendment invalidate these laws. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Dw3rMKXX1DlHKa9GXk1bojxSgYUxsP8r/view?usp=drivesdk#LawFedi#KansasCity
Missouri’s Republican governor, safe and secure, says his “heart goes out to the victims” of today’s mass shooting in #KansasCity. If he really cared about them and all those imperiled by gun violence in , he would do all he could to have the state legislature pass laws enabling people to sue gun industry members who sell and market their products dangerously. Such laws create the possibility of civil accountability to victims and therefore motivate more responsible industry practices.
Maybe it's just because I'm former military but the absolute lack of muzzle awareness in literally every pop culture entertainment thing is so ridiculous.
If realism were factored in in the tiniest amount there would be soooo many dead or faceless characters from accidental miss fires. It's damn near rage inducing.
Say what you will about gun control, at the very least we could foster a safer gun culture if we must have one.
