"At midday, more than 35 million people in southern #Texas, #Louisiana and #Florida were under excessive #heat warnings, watches and advisories extending through the three-day Juneteenth weekend, the National Weather Service said.
The growing frequency and intensity of severe weather across the U.S. is symptomatic of human-driven #ClimateChange, climate scientists say."
#shade#sail temporarily mounted. Attempt to reduce sunlight hitting one side of the house during these heatwave, and to maybe make that side of the #patio usable in the morning. #heatwave#adaptation
Someone appears to have issued #umbrellas for #sun protection there in #SouthKorea at the #heatwave striken World Scout Jamboree. Not a bad idea. Spot check and nearly every group walking has umbrellas.
Southern Florida once again has "EXTREME" Heat Risk today 5/18/24.
Extreme - This level of rare and/or long-duration extreme heat with little to no overnight relief affects anyone without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration. Impacts likely in most health systems, heat-sensitive industries and infrastructure.
At the risk of repeating myself, here's my list of #heatwave preparation/adaptation #tips -- these (and other things) will pay off very strongly, this year, or next year, or the next. If there's some heatwave preparation you can do this week, it's worth it. https://www.patreon.com/posts/heatwave-hacking-85954524
"Extreme" Wet Bulb Globe Temperature forecast from the NWS in interesting. I wonder if it's calibrated or not. 96F WBGT here, which is maybe (?!) somewhere near the limits of humans without supplemental air conditioning... (technical details on this are not clear to me). #CAwx#AZwx#TXwx#NVwx#heatwave#WBGT
#heatwave adaptation move for today: ordered a "shade sail" for the back patio in an attempt to (further) reduce heat into the house (and also make the backyard less warm during mid-day); the shade cloth on the tomatoes has been a HUGE difference and thinking this will be also very effective.
#ClimateDiary Our neighbour country #Spain expects an extreme #heatwave with 40°C. This is more than 6-10 degrees than normal because we have APRIL! In some regions this is 15-20 degrees over normal. Crazy!
We are sitting in the middle of the #climateCrisis, which is already on our doorstep. Have we ever considered that 1.5 degrees is an average temperature? How will those who get the extremes live? Here it's rather cold but we have winter #drought in France. Never had one in winter ...
My current #heatwave plans: 1. working A/C and optimized, insulated house if power available 2. Secondary location (friends/family) available with shore power A/C if localized power or A/C failure 3. Generator backup and room A/C backup if both shore power/AC failure. (I know... very long list... but I like thinking through scenarios).
Even after a #Dallas mail carrier’s recent death from extreme heat, #USPS is still forcing carriers to speed up, work overtime hours, and forego breaks.
"Nigerians are facing a double whammy as scorching #heatwave coincides with widespread #PowerOutages that have seen many areas experience total darkness for days on end.
About half of the country is in danger of sunstroke, muscle cramps, and heat exhaustion as air temperatures hit 47°C over the north and 39°C over the south, according to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet)."
Utilities blame "gas constraints" for the outages.
