Those of you who have a , what are your use-cases for smart plugs?

Most of my electrical things aren't just on/off.

I've got a light, a fan, and an electric blanket which can be controlled from the plug.

Other things (like TV, kettle, etc) need interaction after the power is turned on.

Have you found any good uses for plugs?

(Not interested in rants about security & privacy, thanks.)

Has anyone here used a #Matter smart plug to detect when an electrical appliance has finished doing something?

For example, I want to plug in my rice cooker and get an alert on my phone when its electrical use drops to zero.

Ideally using something like #HomeAssistant - but I'm not fussed.

(Looking for people with direct & personal experience; I know how to use Google. Also, not looking for your criticisms of #IoT.)

I'm thinking how to add it to the general grid, how to physically protect it, or maybe store an encrypted archive of messages, or just fill in the code from a regular node and they will not be in the general list, but they will fulfill their function. Need advice on a high good but not expensive Lora antenna that would overcome the range of the area of 5km

It's scalable....

Building a remote water level readout for my irrigation tank using one of those chonky sewage/~industrial tank sensors and the accuracy is impressive. Paired with a good ADC I get rock solid mm level accuracy. That would give me about 150ml volume resolution.

Bulk rechargeable 3V battery order arrived.

The class act continues to sell devices using these while only providing and selling single-use batteries.

Really digging the minimal packaging use here - these were just directly in an envelope.

I kind of expected this already, but it looks like you can't pair a Zigbee button from Ikea with a Zigbee lightbulb from another manufacturer (Ledvance in this case). What was the point of having standards again? 🙄

Given that we've seen three companies in just the last couple of weeks enshittify their device or API offerings (Hue requiring a cloud account, Chamberlain disabling API access, Mazda sending a cease and desist to the Mazda developer), I've created a GitHub repository to track problem devices & APIs.

I think it'll be good to have a central location to point new users to with a list of stuff not to get.

PRs welcome.

🆕 blog! “The Fediverse of Things”

One of the most frustrating things in modern technology is the effort spent trying to artificially restrict abundance. Take, for example, this tale from museum-worker Aaron Cope: I was out with a friend who worked for Twitter and I asked them whether it would be possible for the museum to “create 200,000 Twitter accounts, one […]

Reminder - I created https://github.com/unixorn/internet-of-trash as a list of things that don't work well, have had the vendor try to force you to use the cloud for something that was locally controlled, or are otherwise a pain to use with home automation.

If something is supposedly for #SmartHome but is a pain to use with home automation, please add it to the list.

The goal is to have a warning list of products to avoid, especially for people new to #HomeAutomation or #HomeAssistant .

🆕 blog! “My Underkill Home Network”

There's an absolutely delightfully bonkers post doing the rounds called "My Overkill Home Network" - which is a look into what happens when a computer geek goes feral and stuffs as many Internet connected thingamajigs in a living space. We're talking professional grade, rack mounted, doubly redundant, over-specced, equipment. Overkill is underselli…

If I'm building a ESP32-based thing which does HTTPS requests to the internet, my options are to eternally watch out for CA changes of those external servers, or to disable cert verification. Am I missing something, some solution that could reasonably be expected to run unmodified for a few years?

Built a water level sensor for my irrigation systems water container. Shows current level in mm via the OLED and via WiFi for low level and leakage alerts.

Uses a pressure based industrial liquid level sensor which is really accurate and stable, fantastic sensor!

based firmware on a dev board. for UI.
MCP3421 for sensor readout/4-20mA conversion.

Oh look, another reason light bulbs don't belong on the internet

https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/security/tp-link-smart-bulbs-can-let-hackers-steal-your-wifi-password/

If you're going to use this stuff, at the very least put it on its own isolated network with aggressive firewall rules with basically all ports blocked except the one you need, and only from the IP range (or single address) you access it from. All outbound traffic blocked.

Cloud is just a single piece in the Internet of Things puzzle. IoT deployments likewise demand domain-specific knowledge and non-cloud skills to build complete solutions.

Simple IoT use cases are not headline topics. There is no way to hide the lack of business understanding and poor execution behind vague terms and buzzwords. The solution either provides business value or does not. For that reason, I am a big fan of those straightforward IoT use cases.

My landlord installed a heatpump / electric combo water heater last month. It has a wifi connectivity feature that supposedly lets you schedule the water heater.

I was excited to be able to turn it off during peak times (4 to 9pm) and at night and set it to high efficiency mode when needed.
