#Alito has no shame. It isn’t just that he refuses to recuse himself from #Jan6 cases before the Supreme Court — it’s his arrogant assertion that he can assess how a “reasonable person” would view his involvement. https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2024/05/29/justice-alito-rejects-recuse-flags-jan-6-cases/ 73895356007/ 1/ #JudicialEthics #RuleOfLaw

Justice Clarence Thomas calls criticism of him ‘nastiness’ & ‘lies’

After facing harsh questions about his judicial decisions & accepting lavish gifts from a billionaire, Justice forcefully pushed back on
his critics Fri — saying he & his wife, , have endured “nastiness” & “lies.”

The Supreme Court's per curiam opinion pushes Trump's agenda despite the rules of judicial ethics and its limited jurisdiction.
*Thomas join an opinion that grants his wife a right to enjoy a federal office.
*The opinion is a purely advisory opinion on the role of Congress because it's not needed for the result. It's not binding on lower courts. It'll be interesting to see how much attention lower courts give this attempt to legislate.

Before law school, Crystal Clanton lived for a year with Clarence and Ginni Thomas. Whatever else is off about Clanton (and there is evidence of more), that connection makes it unethical for C. Thomas to have hired her as a Supreme Court clerk. That is a position of public trust and just the appearance of awarding the post on the basis of a personal relationship is ethically inappropriate. In 2017, I was first asked by a journalist whether Ginni Thomas’s conduct should and could be a basis for Justice to recuse himself from a case involving Donald Trump. https://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2017/02/16/leaked-emails-show-justice-clarence-thomas-s-wife-pushing-travel-ban

Take the time to read in full this superb story from #ProPublica, reporting #ClarenceThomas appearances at right wing, mega-high dollar donor events sponsored by the #Koch brothers. All the details matter because the show how Thomas is embedded in travel and lodging arranged by and for the sponsors and attendees. He hasn’t disclosed most of what the story reports, suggesting that he only “corrects” his disclosures when caught. https://www.propublica.org/article/clarence-thomas-secretly-attended-koch-brothers-donor-events-scotus #LawFedi #Ethics #JudicialEthics

If Leonard Leo, Harlan Crow, and their multibillionaire Federalist Society cohorts think that they can get away with buying conservative Supreme Court justices, they’re absolutely right. They can. And they have.

U.S. schools should discourage students from applying for clerkships with ; faculty should refuse to recommend students for those clerkships; firms and other legal employers should refuse to hire people who have chosen to clerk for Thomas starting this year (when the large extent of his corruption became known). To do otherwise is to be complicit with Thomas’s unethical conduct.

How #HarlanCrow Slashed his Tax Bill by Taking #ClarenceThomas on Superyacht Cruises

In lavishing gifts on the #SupremeCourt #justice, the #billionaire #GOP #donor may have violated #TaxLaws

Tax data obtained by @ProPublica provides a glimpse of what congressional investigators would find if Crow were to open his books…. Crow’s voyages w/Thomas, the data shows, contributed to a nice side benefit: They helped reduce Crow’s tax bill.…

Much like war advances medicine, Trump's war on reality with the aid of rogue lawyers and FoxNews has advanced the law of attorney misconduct and defamation.

Let us hope that the SCOTUS Influence Scandals bring us similar advances in Judicial Ethics.
