Yesterday, we went on a day trip to #Oxford by #train. No other means of powered transport was used as we #cycled to and from our local #RailwayStation.
Here is the #countryside zooming past the train window.
I wonder what happened to the #JustStopOil (?) donkey I saw having a nice rest and a graze at the foot of South Park #Oxford on my way in. It didn't turn up at the #SafeStreetsNow gathering, I guess St Clements was a bit daunting, what with the heavy motor traffic and narrow pavements. I wish I'd taken a photo.
Urbanism is streets you can get a nice donkey down safely #Asstodon 🫏
After lunch yesterday, we went to the #HistoryOfScienceMuseum in #Oxford. It’s not very big but contains some really fascinating exhibits. It is right next to the #SheldonianTheatre and well worth a visit.
I just finished my hour-long interview with Oxford University concerning their study of Mastodon and decentralized social media.
They were especially interested in what we’ve done here at Veganism Social, as we have our own fork with custom features that address common complaints such as content discoverability.
Veganism Social’s use case was exemplary of the benefits of decentralizion. Our moderation is uniquely anti-speciesist, and the community has a clear purpose beyond ‘general’.
My analyses of the technological and sociological benefits of decentralization are extensive. I (currently) have a deep understanding of Mastodon’s code-base, and how to use it. I also worked as a software developer for centralized social media, and now moderate a subreddit with 100k members.
I could not possibly exhaust myself of exhilarating insights to share.
Surely, the Oxford study will broaden awareness of how decentralized social media will benefit society.
Next time my wife asks me to stop info-dumping, I’ll banter that Oxford might think it’s worth listening to. 🤭
They’re sending me an Amazon gift card as compensation, and of course I’m spending it all on candy.
Hello! I'm part of a local group of filmmakers working on improving our skills together.
🏛️ We are looking for interesting or unusual filming locations. Businesses, outdoor spaces, restaurants, homes, etc. In exchange, we can take professional photos, include you in marketing, buy from your business, etc.
If you wouldn't mind a small film crew coming into your space for a day, say hello! 👇
At another #Oxford event "How can we build the sustainable economy?' with Dieter Helm & Dimitri Zenghelis" let's see if this steps out of the pointless #mainstreaming path of the last 3 events #oxfordmartinschool
I find it hard to believe that the addition of one more platform at Oxford train station will be enough to prevent it running at/over capacity.
I wonder if there would ever be interest in a station at Grandpont (close to where the original Oxford station was, but maybe slightly south at Hinksey Sidings as there is more space there). This would offer more space for future platform expansion, and there could be a light rail link between the two stations.
As I've moved over to this lovely Mastodon instance in the past week I thought I’d redo an #introduction post.
I’m Ben, I live near #oxford, and I work in #data#insight#marketresearch#cx roles. Loves music which is FUN, pretty much any kind of books, and late nineties sort of video games.
Again, no mention of the #Board. #AlicePerkins, then #TimParker chaired the #PostOffice Board and should have been asking hard questions as soon as the first wisp of scandal appeared.
But unlike #PaulaVennells they both went to #Oxford.
Jonathan Evans and Alan Cook - the latter CEO of the Financial Ombudsman Service at the same time as being non-exec at the PO - why aren't they being mentioned? #PostOfficeScandal
In the old days, the Guardian would've been onto this.
Did you know that in 1755, after the #Dodo went extinct, the director of the Ashmolean #Museum in #Oxford decided that the stuffed Dodo they had was too musty & promptly burned it?
This was the very last preserved Dodo.
An appalled employee tried to save the bird, but could only rescue the head & a foot.
Consequently, we actually don't know much about the bird. Such as its diet or breeding habits.
(It's unclear if the story's true. But the lack of remains is.)
Moreno says they're “an urban policy for living with more healthy proximity to local jobs, local commerce, green areas, sports activities, cultural activities. This is a way to liberate our economy, liberating our ecology with more bikeability, more walkability. It is not, not, not a traffic plan.
#Oxford Council are responsible too, as they have badly communicated their plan to manage traffic.
27 Sept 1592: A group of the Earl of #Essex's friends & clients receive honorary MAs #otd from the university of #Oxford on the occasion of Elizabeth I's visit there (NPG)
Three deer grazing in flooded water meadows right by a busy road in Oxford. We wouldn't normally see them here, so I imagine the flooding may have pushed them onto slightly higher ground. (Red or Roe? Couldn't tell from a distance) #Floods#Oxford#Wildlife
I've shared this before but anyway, I used park my van on a quiet village street quite legally, and start and finish the day with a nice 15-20km ride into my office in #Oxford alongside the river. I returned one evening to find not one but two notes stuffed under the windscreen wipers … #cycling#activeTravel
