"Governments are failing to cut greenhouse gas #emissions fast enough to meet the goals of the #ParisAgreement and to stave off #climate disaster, a major report by the UN has found.
Meeting the goals will require “phasing out all unabated #FossilFuels”, the report says, in an acknowledgment that some oil-producing countries may find hard to take."
"#G20 countries on Saturday said they will aim to triple global #RenewableEnergy capacity by 2030 and expedite efforts to phase down #coal power in line with national circumstances but did not commit to a phase-out of all polluting #FossilFuels, including oil and gas.
Translation:
Countries who got rich off coal, oil, and gas can't imagine a life without them and are clinging to their addition.
FuelCell Energy and Toyota Motor North America said they have completed what the groups call a “Tri-gen” production system at the Port of Long Beach in California. The system, owned by FuelCell Energy and serving Toyota’s operations at the port, will produce electricity from renewable resources, as well as hydrogen, along with water from directed biogas.
So it looks like there have been no bidders in the latest round for #offshorewind licences/support packages (because the package took no account of the industries soaring costs, like to UK's current #inflation), while the #onshorewind 'relaxation' has been a damp squib, with few thinking its going to re-invigorate the onshore wind sector..
To be frank its like the Govt. isn't really interesting in #renewableenergy...
Oh hold on.... aren't the #Tories in the pockets of the #fossilfuel firms?
Electric vehicles are dirtier to build but cleaner to drive than conventional cars. A study found that EVs must be driven for 21725 kilometres (13,500 miles) to offset their higher carbon footprint from manufacturing. EV owners can save money and emissions by driving more and charging from renewable sources.
"#Africa will seek to present itself as a solution to the global warming crisis in a declaration to be signed by heads of state on September 6 at the inaugural Africa Climate Summit in #Nairobi, Kenya.
African leaders committed to tripling the proportion of electricity generated from renewable sources to 60% by 2030 compared with the 2019 levels."
The #Congo#rainforest is a carbon sink comparable to the Amazon, and #Africa’s untapped #RenewableEnergy potential is 50 times the global anticipated electricity demand by 2040.
Africans could save the world.
If the world lets them.
"While hydrogen fuel is expensive and the buses come at a slightly higher cost than electric battery vehicles, Tree said a price analysis from Metro revealed that the total capital costs for investing in hydrogen were lower, primarily because they require far fewer refueling stations."
An excellent summary from @guardian interviewing 45 #climate scientists in summer of 2023.
Their responses? It’s not too late to act, and actions need to shut down new #fossilfuel projects and make a rapid transition to #renewableenergy or we risk worse/deadlier summers ahead.
Link up w an organization that pushes for those goals. #climateaction
“Some #Alberta communities are pushing back against the provincial government's six-month pause on approvals of new #RenewableEnergy projects.
"They pulled the rug out from under us," said John Rimmer, mayor of Caroline, where the United Conservative government's move has stranded a #solar project that would have contributed at least 15 per cent of the community's municipal budget.”
For years, solar panels were too expensive for most churches and other nonprofits to consider. Federal tax credits that cut costs by up to 30% were available to homeowners but inaccessible to churches that don’t pay taxes.
The Inflation Reduction Act, passed in August 2022, changed that situation.
The #Texas Advisory and Notification System (#TXANS) daily for the past week: “Due to low #wind and potential low #solar generation and high demand, operating reserves for #ERCOT are expected to be low in the afternoon and evening.” https://www.ercot.com/txans
"A majority of Americans (57%) say they favor more nuclear power plants to generate electricity in the country, up from 43% who said this in 2020.
"Americans are still far more likely to say they favor more solar power (82%) and wind power (75%) than nuclear power. All three energy sources emit no carbon."
