Fantastic news that, despite the best efforts of Australia’s cowardly politicians, the market is driving dirty energy out of the system

Germany accelerating in solar PV once more. New build rate finally exceeding its world leading early peak in 2011!

World may have crossed solar power ‘tipping point’ - instead of trying to accelerate the rollout of a new study from the suggests we should focus our energy on removing barriers and and it will rapidly become our main energy source under its own momentum.

Emission factor of Dutch electricity plummeting thanks to the surge in wind and solar power. Well on its way to achieve the Climate Agreement target of 100 g/kWh before 2030. And to zero by 2040, but we have bigger emissions to urgently tackle in other sectors.

The Annular Solar Eclipse this morning was cool to watch here in Tucson, AZ USA, but it did reduce our production of electricity from our solar panels! Note the peak of the Eclipse at 9:30am MST is perfectly shown by the dip to 828 Watts.

I remember when solar PV modules were ~€4.00 per Watt, around 20 years ago. Now I get an offer for €0.122 per Watt, free on board in China. And for another €0.005, delivered in Rotterdam.
After a 'speed bump' in the last 2 years or so, they've resumed their drop. Hard to beat!

And there we go. 100kWh after 40 days of installing the solar power. Thats over 30€ and quite a bit of CO2 at current prices here. After two years the system will have broken even both in terms of CO2 and money — with the subsidy even much earlier.

"The idea that solar power could interfere with the UK’s food security is utterly detached from reality. Solar power generated over 8% of all our electricity this spring, but takes up less land than golf courses."

Better idea than banning solar panels on potential farmland - turn all the golf courses into community gardens and allotment sites.

Nuclear is a dead cat.

“The rooftop solar record wasn’t the only one to fall on the weekend.

“According to GPE NEMLog2, other records to fall included record instantaneous battery charge in South Australia (334.7 MW earlier on Saturday at 10.30am), Victoria battery charge (390 MW), and record NEM-wide battery charge of 594.8 MW at 2.50pm (AEST) on Saturday.

“In NSW, battery discharge hit a record 174.5 MW at 6.30pm on Saturday.

“Other records included instantaneous wind output in Queensland (842MW), at the same time as a record amount of wind curtailment (854.7MW), and a record wind share (15.9 per cent).

“Also in NSW, black coal output hit a record low of 2,073.0 MW at 13:55 hrs on Saturday, and coal and gas together hit a new record low of 2,073.2 MW at the same time.”

Our ZERO Smart City Cube!

The Project:

  • Publicly funded research project
  • Centered around 5G communication
  • Goal: Improve road traffic (Increase efficiency roundabout, test safety measures, integrate Smart City functionality)

The cube:

  • Dynamic lighting to increase traffic safety
  • Warn vulnerable road users at crossings
  • Inform speeding drivers
  • First deployed at the First Mile in Ingolstadt
  • Energy-self-sufficient via solar power
  • Weather and vandalism-proof

The technology:

  • Recognition of road users is based on V2X, but can also rely on other sources (e.g. LIDAR)
  • Low latency communication with other systems via 5G mobile networks
  • Power storage based on Audi second life battery modules
  • Built-in roadside unit with 5G and V2X functionality.

Climate change is an immediate threat to the majority of the world's population.

We need a local, regional, state, national, and international "moon shot" type of concentration of effort using available resources while developing and advancing new science and technologies to counteract the damage humans have caused.

Without this type of all-out, universal cooperation, human civilization, and perhaps humanity itself, are in imminent danger of extinction.

Every little bit of progress matters in an Everything, Everywhere, All at Once mitigation strategy.

Is this anywhere near enough? No.

Is this real and necessary progress towards reducing damage? Yes, unequivocally.

is ramping up in the and now accounts for 7.1% of our energy, driven in part by a 26.6% increase in small-scale installations like rooftop from July 2022 to July 2023.

A small start.

Damaging or destroying and natural is NOT part of, and is directly antithetical to, a solid Everything, Everywhere, All at Once mitigation strategy.

We must make all things better, not sacrifice one part to benefit another as that merely keeps us treading water.

I think this summer I will attach some magnets and a wire coil on an old exercise bike to turn it into a pedal-powered electrical generator. Or maybe 3D print a mini vertical axis wind turbine to stick on the roof. Or wire together the solar panels from some old garden lights. Just as a fun project, the goal would be to charge up a portable USB battery pack so I can occasionally recharge my phone with "home grown" electricity. ⚡🤓⚡

jcroisant,

Here's my harvest: 22 working solar cells, each ranging from about 250 to 375 mm on a side. Each generates about 3.5 volts closed circuit, and I measured 20–30 milliamps pointed directly at the sun this afternoon. I've got 16 in the larger size, so if my understanding is correct I could wire them up series-parallel 2×8 to get up to 240 mA at 7 V (or maybe 3×5 to allow for voltage drop), regulate down to 5 V to trickle charge a cheap USB battery bank, and then occasionally use that to partly charge my phone, or power small projects. 🤔

jcroisant,

Here's the inside of the yard light that was in the worst shape. Super dirty, spider webs inside, leaky battery, the LED actually fell off because the wires completely corroded through. The solar cells may be sealed with epoxy but the rest of it is open to the elements. That plus the cheap batteries are why these fail so soon. Really a shame to produce so much waste just to save a few cents on production costs. 😠 If you have solar yard lights, you can unscrew them and coat the circuit board with clear acrylic nail polish (or five minute epoxy, or silicone window sealant) and the battery terminals with a glob of Vaseline to prolong their lifespan. Also don't store them upside down in the rain like the previous owner of these ones. 😅
