#Tory Ministers James Heappey & Robert Halfon step down from their cabinet posts, with Halfon the #CONservative MP for Harlow also announcing he's to step down as an MP at the next election.
This brings the total to more than 60 Tory MP's who've now confirmed they will not stand at the 2024 #GeneralElection.
The key to the Tories political strategy is the centrality of impoverishment - we can see it in the enforced poverty for austerity, in the dismantling of social provisions across local government & of course, we can see it in the dismemberment of the cultural sector in this country.
The Tories have impoverished us to capture society's (multitudinous) value(s) for the rich.
They are plunderers of the economy, of society & of culture...
Dr Andrew Boswell is trying to hold government to account for not meeting its #NetZero commitments or acknowledging if you build more roads, there will ultimately be more traffic to fill those roads…but local #Tories and my local rightwing rag are determined to cast him as the villain.
The rightwing bias of this piece is so blatant with its opening paragraph:
‘A climate activist who has cost taxpayers tens of millions of pounds by bringing a string of legal challenges to upgrade works on the A47 is coming under pressure to abandon his latest case.’
Dr Boswell’s case is crowdfunded as many want him to stand up to the deceitful #Tory government not meeting its climate commitments.
His actions are entirely legal…which is why Tory MPs and press are tarnishing his reputation.
#OwenJones: "…after a 14yr stretch of #Tory rule, just as #Labour looks set to reconquer No 10 by a landslide, I’ve just emailed the party cancelling my membership.
#Corbyn’s 2017 manifesto, #Starmer declared, was the party’s “foundational document”.
Yet years on, Labour has become a hostile environment for anyone believing in the very policies Starmer relied upon to secure the leadership."
“A revolution in the way Britain does politics has begun in Devon. Tory MPs should be afraid”
by George Monbiot in the Guardian @TheGuardian_uk
“This is what democracy looks like: hundreds of people queueing in the rain, seeking to take back control of a political system that treats voters like an afterthought. Last weekend, a remarkable democratic experiment reached its first conclusion. A process that began here in South Devon and is now spreading to other constituencies has allowed voters to reclaim the initiative from centralised and self-interested political parties. It directly confronts our unfair electoral system.”
"Former defence secretary Ben Wallace has branded the SNP and Greens “wee pretendy foreign secretaries” after Israeli flights were barred from using Prestwick Airport."
@fkamiah17 Ben Wallace working hard to ensure #tory MPs from #Scotland are a rarity - just in case anyone forgot how much contempt tories have for everyone else
I read that #Labour is going to "hardwire growth" and "invest in industries of the future" with "a decade of national renewal".
The disUK is hamstrung by #Tory mismanagement (see #Brexit) and this aspirational capitalist bullshit is just more of the same. One can imagine Johnson spouting all that Reeves says here.
“Families across the country are united in their desire for lower bills, cleaner water, and a green and pleasant home that we can leave for our children. Instead of embracing this mainstream majority, Rishi Sunak is willing to give up the fight for lower bills and energy security because he wants to stoke the fires of a culture war.”
Ed Miliband press release ahead of speech on #NetZero tomorrow.
I just wish Starmer and Reeves were fully on board.
But the #Tory response to Miliband, already out from Claire Coutinho, the Energy Secretary (and one of Sunak’s closest allies) is entirely based on ramping financial fear:
“Their mad 2030 promise is not based on what industry or consumers want – they would see costs implode, mean higher taxes on working people and take us back to square one on the economy.”
Both industry and voters actually agree with Labour and are begging for a government that can show leadership on Net Zero and Climate…
have the #tory party have anything to say about #trump latest comments that there will be a "bloodbath" if he loses and why they still have close contact with the trump party, while they talk about the new extremist bill about violence
The results of a poll on the Q of whether Hester’s comments about Diane Abbott and black women were racist or not spells out in a scarily clear way what is wrong with the UK.
For a 1/3 of people to not think that hating all black women on the basis of what Abbott looks like and to wish her dead is NOT racist, just astounds me. But almost 1 in 2 Tory voters think it was NOT racist. How?!
#Racism has been allowed to grow unchecked under the successive #Tory governments of past 14 years m, but particularly under our current PM, #Sunak.
People are no longer ashamed to admit they are racist, because they saw #Brexit as the green light for that abhorrent behaviour.
The PM struggles to admit that colleagues and donors who make blatantly racist comments are racist. He’s a man of colour - why doesn’t he want to call it out?
Dear #Tory voters, or Scumbags if I may be informal, if you don't want a society filled with what you perceive as "jobsworths", then maybe don't create a society where being fired and facing unemployment is a fast track to permanent soul crushing poverty. Because if being unemployed is intolerable, people are not gonna put their jobs at risk to bend the rules for you.
Ink in the blogosphere is beginning to spread about the proposed #Biden#HumanitarianAid bridgehead on the Mediterranean coast of #Gaza.
Some are saying it’s a distraction to appease #voters while Biden continues to provide arms and cover. Some, that the intention is to actually benefit the #zionists by providing a place to evacuate #palestinians. Some go so far as to claim it’s intended as the terminus of the #Israeli#RiverToTheSea dream.
My take? These theories fail to understand the #evil genius leaders in the U.S. are capable.
