We really need to educate people on statistical reasoning and mixed methods research...A RANT THREAD (1/?)
Okay, so, cards on the table, I am published as a mixed methods, social science researcher and have helped co-author multiple reports on LGBTQIA+ public mental health and community experiences. Let's just say, I ain't no amateur on this topic.
So, something that drives me nuts in conversations about trans healthcare and especially trans youth gender-affirming care is that people don't understand basic statistical reasoning.
One of the parts of this that clicked for me today on why so many arguments frustrate me is that people don't actually understand how sampling works and how we reason from a specific sample in a study....
I propose the term "puberty blockers" be replaced.
And instead we use a term like "puberty-choice therapies" to describe both the medications and the process of getting them.
For one thing, it sounds less dramatic and unnatural than "PUBERTY BLOCKERS", and thus less likely to play into transphobic false propaganda that they're an abusive way to permanently turn one's kid into a stunted monster or whatever.
Also, the kid is likely to experience some type of puberty at one point or another. It seems more accurate to call it "puberty pause" or "puberty redirection", and it puts more agency into the kid's and family's hands where it belongs.
I wish for all the people who believe #trans kids should be subjected to double-blind studies of the effectiveness of hormone treatments to themselves subjected to the first double-blind studies of the effectiveness of parachutes.
I just had to stand in a checkout queue at the supermarket and experience a woman share her trans kids conspiracy rant with the guy in front of me.
The language she used exposed the obvious, that she had been indoctrinated by the hate groups that are all over facebook, it was so sickeningly sad to witness.
I usually wear earbuds when out shopping, I'll never forget them again.
#Florida Republicans Pass Bill Allowing #Trans Kids to Be Removed From Their Families
"This is just the latest anti-trans bill passed in the state, but it’s among the most dangerous.
(...)
If it becomes law, the bill will allow the state to take custody of a child if they have been “subjected to or [are] threatened with being subjected to” gender-affirming care, which includes puberty blockers and hormone replacement therapy. Florida courts could modify custody agreements from a different state if the minor is likely to receive gender-affirming care in that second state. The text refers to gender-affirming care as “sex-reassignment prescriptions or procedures” and qualifies this care as a form of “physical harm" https://newrepublic.com/post/172063/florida-house-bill-allowing-trans-kids-removed-families #transrightsarehumanrights#Kids#TransKids#USA
About to get my craft on. Sign-making for tomorrow’s rally at the #Saskatchewan Legislature opposing the dangerous new “parents rights” policy forcing schools to inform parents when #TransKids change their names or pronouns. #ProtectTransKids

Since it's #Pride month, I'll post a few of the major pieces I've written over the years around coming out, transitioning, finding identity, and other queer stuff.
"Every way was wrong" is about my experience as a closeted trans girl, how things felt "off" early on even though I didn't have the language to describe it. This is one of the darker ones.

There's a wealth of research showing that puberty blockers to be safe and effective. They are used “off-label”, which means they are used outside their licenced use.
Other "off-label" medication includes the contraceptive pill, which is a hormonal treatment used to treat acne.
