Contemplating breadcrumbs for my personal site.

Does someone want to talk me out of it?

Or, maybe teach me something about doing it well?

I've used on a live CD a lot over the past year or two and I have one that I would love, love, love. Since the session will only last a few days, I don't want it to clog my device list, but I do want to be able to access my stuff. Let me use a webcam to scan a from my phone and have it suck down my history and passwords and allow me to send and receive tabs and if it doesn't have activity after 24 (default) hours, remove it from the device list.

For video meetings, could the software edit my eyes so other attendees see me looking at them (directly at my laptop's camera instead of slightly lower at my laptop's screen), in the interest of better #interpersonal communication through eye contact?

Because #EyeContact improves #communication during #video #calls and #online #meetings via #Zoom or #Teams or other #VideoCall #software, when #WFH or from #remote #work locations.

Dear Open Source software developer,

First of all, let me assure you that I truly appreciate your work. Releasing software under a free license is a gift to us all. It shows that you care about the widespread adoption of your project, and that's quite commendable. However, I have a humble request – please, pretty please, don't release it with the statement, "compiling it is so complex and full of dependencies that the way to use my program is 'docker compose up'."

By doing this, you're limiting access to your software for those who can't use Docker or those who can't/won't use Linux. It's almost like telling someone to click on 'Install.exe.' Surely, you can do better than that.

I trust you'll consider my request. Thanks again for your hard work!

I absolutely, passionately, hate GUIs in which everything bounces around, spins, and whirs. Hold still already. Too much visual load. Everything screaming for attention at once, so I can't focus on anything.

Some games do this. Please stop. I've already decided to play. No need to jump around to get me to interact.

Please use motion sparingly and judiciously.

Tide Pods, Amazon Prime and the Super Bowl understood the concept of “experience economy”, aka figuring out what the user want to accomplish, taking account the social context of it, and, delivering it (pun intended, hahaha).

Interesting #userexperience concerning @Mastodon ios client message filters and notifications: the client will filter messages according to filters set using the web app (it has yet to gain the ability to do so itself), but still will send a notification to the ios notification system, displaying the message content that doesn't get displayed by the client. Hey, @Gargron , maybe something to have someone look at?

Does anyone know of a good introduction to core usability considerations, aimed at non-developers? Things like discoverability, predictability, consistency, latency vs throughput, Fitts' law? Some colleagues who don't have a software background are getting in to digital health endeavours and I think it would be helpful for them to have some shared understanding.

If you're wondering why applications have a bad rep for : the default GUI frameworks (SWT, JavaFX, Swing) are not accessible out of the box. None of the components support the keyboard shortcuts available on the various operating systems. It's like they were designed to be as different from everything else as possible. Thinking different hurts accessibility. Do better.

And it refuses to use the OS-native file open and save dialogs, replacing them with their own. Which offer none of the abilities users are used to using. And thanks.

When users go to your website, they want to browse it*. All features that compete with that goal (welcome tours, chatbot widgets, FAQ pages, content carousels) degrade the browsing experience.

Fix your website's navigation and content, rather than relying on poor bandaid solutions.

  • yes, strictly speaking they have a goal in mind, but their mental model is that browsing the website will achieve that goal for them
