This sucks on so many levels: Women Who Code is Closing down
I hope the local chapters survive and keep on helping people of all minorities in tech to find their way into tech. Code is too important to leave it to a single group of people!
it seems that local technical #meetups are on life support in many cities. the news about #womenwhocode really set me back this week knowing the impact they have had on many women in the industry.
i would love to hear some positive news about groups that meet regularly that are thriving. link me!
The #Kitchener#Waterloo Linux Users Group @kwlug is still going strong. Although they're looking for folks to make presentations on #FreeSoftware and related things. Remote presentations are welcome, one of the few good things to come out of the pandemic.
Must be coming up on the #KWLUG 25th anniversary soon, too!
@paris
We have several user groups here in Mauritius. The more general/all-encompassing tech group is the MSCC - Mauritian Software Craftsmanship Community. We also have more focused groups for .NET, Python, Frontend, and maybe Cloud Native soon.
These groups have meetups every month more or less, and they're hosted in the offices of companies acting as sponsors.
Additionally, the MSCC is the organiser for the annual DevCon where 1500+ people get to enjoy a 3 day IT conference for free.
Quite surprised to read that #WomenWhoCode is shutting down: locally in #SanDiego they have had a number of great events with speakers, a Slack with good participation, and more. https://womenwhocode.com/blog/the-end-of-an-era-women-who-code-closing Some of us remember San Diego as home to a #WebGrrls chapter which evolved into digitElle and Techniquelle, long forgotten entities now. But there's still utility in such orgs. Perhaps there are others and I'm merely unaware of them.
#WomenWhoCode is shutting down for funding shortfalls. I can’t think of a more dire canary in the Silicon Valley coal mine than this. We can expect a social fascist turn in the IT industry from here out as the remaining jobs not taken by AI are rationed out to men only.
$4m is chump change for infotech capitalists, a few bucks tossed to a pan handler. That they won’t fund #WWC anymore isn’t an economic decision, but palpably a policy priority toward a hard social rightward turn.
@jesseplusplus I’m certainly far on the outside looking up at the nosebleed heights of the infotech socioeconomic pyramid. So I hope you’re right. But WWC did good for some of us far outside of Silicon Valley. I was one such, though couldn’t take it anywhere myself. For that alone they get my salute.
@Shufei thank you for sharing your perspective, it's super helpful to hear their impact outside of my own bubble and how they helped you. I was in Silicon Valley, so it felt a little different there, but I can definitely see how their initiatives could help in a lot of places much less saturated by tech.
One of those Women in Tech types,
artistic and creative types,
dreamer types,
neuro spicy types,
exploring types,
and generally seeing what else I can learn on a day to day basis.
Looking to make friends and prefer to use Mastodon for the things I love.
Winding my way through life and learning more about myself along the way. Will be sharing my thoughts and a bit of my day to day, as well as my hobbies. Will look forward to meeting new people along the way!
nifty new update for all you #StatsNerds out there! In my goal mapping app, you can now select a team matchup and look at the location of all shot attempts and goals. Updated through 10/21 right now, but will be updated regularly soon!
My name's Megan, originally from Minnesota but living in the UK which is now home. Always something in my mind and will post about it here. Hope you have a wonderful day!
I really need to update this page, and find all these amazing Generative Artists on other platforms. And move some folks to the non-binary section. And...more updates!
If you have any updates or additions for this list of Generative Artists who are women or non-binary, please let me know!
@casadebaig@kristinHenry Yeah. There was a time where I hoped that it would be possible to decouple “NFTs as an authenticated registry of people who support the artist and have a financial holding in the artwork” and “NFTs as a reputation laundering scheme for crypto grifters to disguise socially irresponsible behaviour”. The former is still something I think is worthwhile, though there’s no reason it should have anything to do with crypto. It sucks that the latter became so prevalent
@djnavarro@kristinHenry I was somehow counting on the current crypto downward movement or volatility to lead to changes toward a better NFT model. But in the physical world, one more heatwave or flood does not generally lead to climate awareness and here we are, happy humans still enjoying this planet as much as before, energy-wise.
Back to the topic, Danielle is awesome on many levels, Amy Goodchild and Ijeamaka Anyene wrote fine articles on creative code process. 🙏
I have a lot of random thoughts, and will likely post them here.
Last year I took the leap into AppSec from a more general Infosec background. This year, I'm looking at security engineering and programming more generally.
the rewards of being a pioneer in one's field, as woman, are usually that a man claims your ideas as their own, and then maybe a few decades or after you're dead someone might actually go "wow, that's where that guy got that idea from"
Enough! Women need to be recognized and not erased.
A giant thank you to OmniGroup (@omnigroup) for being a Gold Sponsor for this year’s James Dempsey and the Breakpoints benefit concert for #WomenWhoCode!
We use their apps to plan LIVE near #WWDC and are so happy to have them on board as a sponsor!
