70 years ago in 1953, The US #Atomic#Energy Commission published Energy in the Future where they argued that burning #fossil#fuel releases CO₂, which affects #climate & #sea#level.
They pointed out that temperature had been increasing, #glaciers were retreating, and sea level was rising, and speculated that it was due to rising atmospheric CO₂ from land use change and fossil fuel burning!
Today in Labor History November 13, 1974: Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers union activist Karen Silkwood was assassinated during her investigation of a Kerr-McGee nuclear plant in Oklahoma. Her car was run off the road while she attempted to deliver documents to a New York Times reporter.
I am a historian of nuclear science & technology at Hiroshima Peace Inst & Grad School of Peace Studies. My book Nuclear bodies: the global hibakusha (Yale 2022) surveys harm from #nuclear production, weapon testing, & reactor accidents across the globe, & medical models that obscure harm from fallout particles.
Collecting oral histories in 20+ countries , I examine how communities, families and interior psychology suffer via exposures.
I track nuclear #colonialism (selecting the irradiated) arguing the #ColdWar was a limited nuclear war against these populations.
I also explore our relationship to our HL nuclear waste, asserting it is how our descendants will know us. Our choices now reveal our lack of consideration of the 1000s of generations of living beings for whom this waste is already a part of their world.
Previous life: l was a chef & worked w/ #organic food
I'm a professional #artist in my 40's who just moved to the Netherlands from California. I'm #ActuallyAutistic & 10 years #sober. My special interests are #Craft history, #ArtHistory, #ghostsigns , #atomic ephemera, #mudlarking, & snails. I collect cats & tattoos & old advertising signs. In a past life I worked in tech marketing. FUN FACT! I own the only 12 ft skeleton in North Holland.
Looking to meet artists, nerds, & people in the Netherlands!
"The nuclear-armed states must eliminate their nuclear arsenals before they eliminate us."
Leading medical journals published a joint editorial yesterday, calling on world leaders to eliminate atomic weapons, as the threat of civilization-ending conflict continues to grow.
The call was issued in The Lancet, The BMJ, JAMA, International Nursing Review, and other top journals. Dozens more are expected to publish the editorial in the coming days, as we approach the 78th anniversary of the U.S. bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The Doomsday Clock (monitored by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists) is closer to midnight than ever before, reflecting mounting nuclear tensions amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Is there any good Blog post to learn #uBlue customization with relatively limited knowledge about #Docker? I don't like the idea of a distro that I can't customize easily so normal #Silverblue doesn't sound like my favorite choice but uBlue, #VanillaOS and similar approaches sound very tempting and I love the concept of #Atomic distros in general! Also, do you think it's easy enough to learn to imediately switch my main computer over or should I do some more testing in VMs first?

I FELT SO COOL looking like this. This was inspired by the cover of Invisible.

Today in Labor History January 24, 1961: A B-52 bomber, carrying three 4-megaton Mark 39 nuclear bombs, broke up in mid-air, dropping its nuclear payload over North Carolina. Five crewmen successfully bailed out of the aircraft and landed safely. Another ejected, but did not survive the landing. Two others died in the crash. Each of the bombs had more than 250 times the destructive power of the Hiroshima bomb. Each one was large enough to create a 100% kill zone within an 8.5 miles radius. A supervisor of nuclear safety at Sandia National Laboratories said that "one simple, dynamo-technology, low voltage switch stood between the United States and a major catastrophe." However, there is evidence that the switch of at least one of the bombs was set to ARM. No one knows why none of them exploded. And while the authorities were able to recover the uranium core from two of the bombs, one of them is still lost somewhere in North Carolina.
For a truly terrifying look at just how many times we were just a hair trigger away from a major nuclear accident, read Eric Schlosser’s “Command and Control.”
There's a really exciting #Atomic#Linux#KDEPlasma project i like, & thought to follow here in the fediverse. I was going to add it, #Aurora, getaurora.dev/, to my large list of #followedhashtags but unfortunately atm my timing is a little poor. Bloody physics, astronomy, sun 😜
Using Python 3.11 or higher, I want to create an output file and add a line describing it to a log file as an atomic operation: either the output file is created and the log entry is added, or neither happens. fcntl.flock() is only advisory - will something else give me stronger guarantees, preferably on all three major OSes? #python#file-lock #atomic-operation #question
One thing that would certainly make the initial experience of running #Atomic#Fedora better for seasoned #Linux users is having the dnf command exist and grok rpm-ostree out of box. I understand why this is the current experience, but there's definitely room for improvement here:
Ukraine warns of nuclear disaster as Russia orders staff to leave power plant (www.politico.eu)
International Atomic Energy Agency found no visible mines at Zaporizhzhia nuclear power station but still needs better access.
