Today, I tested #mapComplete on a bunch of iPads in a school setting.
To my surprise, "mapcomplete.org/trees" would not load due to "parental controls". Does #safari#blockany '/trees', because of the subreddit discussing cannabis? Can someone confirm this?
I had to block a few users yesterday. Today, I noticed about ten notifications from users I've blocked—they replied to me, continued to make up lies about my heritage, and I continued to see their comments in my notifications....
If you and the blocked user are on the same server, the blocked user will not be able to view your posts on your profile while logged in.
It looks like the limitation that Pamasich and I sort of expected is there. Blocks are basically only possible at your own instance. If the user is on another instance, there's no way to stop them in the fediverse. And that includes it going out to all other instances they federate with too.
I sort of just experienced how this would work if implemented, in a way. A kbin social user posted to a beehaw org magazine. I replied to it, but my post does not seem to have made it to kbin social. However, it's on my instance, beehaw's, lemmy one, etc, because my instance federates with all of those instances. That's sort of what blocking would be like if the original page refused an incoming comment due to a block, all other instances would still accept it. It's possible there's something I'm missing as I'm not super knowledgable on activity pub or the fediverse, so I'll try to learn more about it
Resource use is an issue with the #mastodon codebase, it's not a #block on using it but is an issue to think about using a different #activertypub codebase instead.
With Mastodon going down the #ngo path and wedded to feudalism as "governance" we also face these common issues for tech projects.
Is #Mastodon really viable for the small to medium-sized operator?
We assert, "NO!"
We did something simple. With a Mastodon tab open we hit Ctrl+Shift+E to get the Network Tab. With an inactive thread open in Mastodon, we went to another website to read an article.
An hour passes and what we discovered shocked us. Mastodon somehow justified sending us 55MB of data. The #NetworkTab said 55MB over 1500 requests (53MB transferred).

Without enabled auth fetch, another instance could still retrieve the user's posts. Without disabling unauth api, anyone can still view posts anonymously.
That thing on social media where you respond in good faith to someone, hoping to start a conversation, and you just get a sarcastic dismissive reply. Blocked.
If you're a REAL asshole, not only do I #blockyou, but I go into your replies tab and pre-emptively block all your friends; they're probably assholes too
I've been using this site on and off since November and today is only the second time I've felt the need to #block someone as opposed to nearly weekly on other sites I got a private message saying 'I would like to know you better but don't know how' which set alarm bells ringing from experiences on other sites
Was just reminded that a decade ago #Twitter attempted to kill the #Block function in favor of Mute, and it went so poorly with a community upcry that they quickly reversed themselves.
(“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it”)
@rms the moment this industry came with an alternative (vaping / e sigaret) all countries should have stopped and banned all of this immediately. It's really insane that this is even possible. #block#smoking#vaping#health#Smokefreegeneration#smoke
Full text search has been merged in #Mastodonmain branch, and will be in the next (and final?) 4.2.0 beta 🎉
It is opt-in, so it will take some time to be filled with people content as they enable their profile to be indexed, but this was one of the most wanted Mastodon features for some time.
We plan to deploy it to mastodon.social and mastodon.online in the coming days to have a bit more feedback on it and see how it behaves in the wild.
How do we mere mortals not on @Mastodon opt out of providing #HelpDesk#TechSupport for the crowds or people who can’t figure out how it works and post to #Hashtags we just happen to follow with their questions?
Don't get me wrong: It's good if individuals do "their part" in tackling the climate crisis, by changing their habits and lifestyles, but blaming them, when its clearly the #capitalist system's fault is just wrong.
Be #vegan, consume sustainably, ride your #bike, don't fly.
There are many good reasons to do so, e.g.:
👉 it's the right thing to do
👉 it's healthy
👉 you're a role-model for others
👉 if many people do this, it slightly changes how companies act.
👉 it fosters your awareness for the issues
But also be aware that its a droplet on a hot stone. Non-wealthy individuals won't fix the climate with their daily choices. We have to demand action by the big players.
And I don't mean blame China!
All of us need to demand radical climate action by our governments.
This is my second account (I’ve ditched my first account after it’s been stalked by an obsessive troll) and I’m already finding this website to be so much worse than Reddit. There’s this user named “Dr Wesker” who keeps accusing me of being a troll and writing “fantasy ragebait”. He comments on all of my posts...
6.9 Block Activity The Block activity is used to indicate that the posting actor does not want another actor (defined in the object property) to be able to interact with objects posted by the actor posting the Block activity. The server SHOULD prevent the blocked user from interacting with any object posted by the actor.
Servers SHOULD NOT deliver Block Activities to their object.
And yet what I really, really want is the ability to block instances… any idea if/when that is coming? I know it’s a thing on Mastodon so it should be one here too, hopefully.
Why doesn't blocking work?

Tinted Stained Glass
This suggestion is to add 16 new blocks which are opaque to the light engine but rendered transparently....
How do you report a user for harassment?

YSK: You can block communities from appearing on your "All" feed. just go to the website of your instance, pull up the community, and click "block community" (On mobile click "Sidebar" first") (thelemmy.club)
Why YSK: You may dislike, disagree with, or be tired of certain communities and don’t want them in your feed.
