🧵1/3 Tested for you: If I #block an #instance or people privately, I can no longer interact with them after a short wait, even though I can still see the profile. But I have tried this with #Threads and it does NOT work!
Regardless of whether I block the whole domain or just one account (test with Insta-Boss), I can still interact and comment (he probably, too?). So I will have to move to another instance with #blockThreads ▶️ https://fedipact.online/#privacy#dataSecurity#GDPR@Gargron
The proliferation of #ActivityPub is exciting. But don't dismiss those that want to defederate with corporate socials. The #fediverse was built by individuals escaping the harassment they faced on those platforms.
If you don't agree with your server admin's decision to federate with a specific domain, you can block it on your own. You have the power!
This seems preferable to an admin making the decision for all users.
Here’s a neat little trick in case you don’t already know it: If you block someone and then unblock them, you can get them to stop following you.
I call it bucking :)
So, if you want to try and avoid all the drama that comes with blocking and just don’t want someone to keep following you and commenting on your stuff, try bucking before blocking. And if they’re persistent, you can always block and/or report for harassment, etc.
I call it bucking because following someone on the fediverse is not a right you have but a privilege they bestow upon you. It’s them inviting you onto their back to carry you with them on their journey. And if they want you off their back, that’s their right.
(If you try to clamber back on or harass them for it, it shows that you don’t respect consent and you should probably take that as a prompt for self-reflection.)
»#Boundaries are the only way to maintain a healthy balance and protect our well-being. In the physical world, we set boundaries without a second thought – we lock our doors, choose our friends, and decide who we let in. By using the #block function, you're setting a clear boundary, and in doing so, you're taking a step towards preserving your mental and emotional well-being.«
Sometimes, briefly, I miss my days as an influencer online. That was never my plan, but as you know, the former Twitter used Algorithms. The more engagement you made, the higher your presence became. My followers have always been higher than the amount I follow. The more I follow, the less I see, caught up in a fast moving stream of (mostly garbage) ReTweets. #ENGAGEMENT is not Boosting or Liking, it's responding, dialogue, comments, and conversation. #Influencer#Klout#Twitter#Gifts#Thread
BTW, don't take me as an authority on anything, without running it past the standard Judge Judy Smell Test. 😎 Maybe you don't think I know what I'm talking about? Show me your former Twitter following? Did you get gifts as an #influencer ?
I must be doing something right? I can duplicate the process, or teach you how, but let's forget about that toxic X sludge and learn where you are?
If you have to #Beg for #Followers, you're doing it wrong. Go back to Facebook. #SM#Tips#Begging = #Block
It seems like it's not the UI or the usability, that get's people to leave #Mastodon nowadays but - small, yet vocal and totally not self-critical - parts of the community, that can't stop lecturing others about the #Fediverse and how to act/post/comment here or about what.
German Mastodon had the ridiculous debate about #Zoom, other parts similar stuff (scolding someone for #bw-photos... really?).
Maybe the recent update helps people get it together, otherwise it will get even quieter here.
@mho Some folks are just assholes that want to dictate others how to post instead of pressing #mute and/or #block button if they can't handle someone...
But then again we see Egoists like #Ro abusing his #blocklist (#TheBadSpace) as a tool for personal vendettas and to silence critics, so I'm not surprised about it...
It seems that to be effective, a Block relies entirely on the Block being respected by the remote server hosting the blocked account. If that server is self-hosted by the operator of that account, it's hardly going to respect Block requests.
Why can't the server hosting the account doing the blocking identify a request to see a post from the blocked account, and refuse that request?
New Term:
Troll Block - verb - demeaning comments at a target individual or group followed by an immediately blocking or canceling the target. #socialmedia #mastodon
This site is ironic. it's promoting privacy, yet it's collecting data by requiring one to enable javascript and has a google tracker to track you with googletagmanager.com.
It's a fail. it also promoting vpn services linked to an israeli spyware / 'marketing' company.
The nordvpn android app has trackers in them, hence I dropped them a very very very long time ago.
Very good essay by Hala Alyan on how people in “the West” (my own bad phrasing) often fail to recognise Palestinian humanity, stories, suffering.
The dehumanisation of others has been, is, a key feature of all brutal systems and atrocities, but it also has many manifestations in the more everyday.
Let’s keep on reminding everyone - because it’s needed- of this most basic fact: we are all human, we all suffer and feel. #Personhood#HumanStories
@pvonhellermannn like the perverse 'everyone's lives matter' slogan that hates #blacklivesmatter, pretending we don't live in a system of oppression. Frankly the best thing to do is to #block them. I've had many and the sight/sound of silence after blocking is divine 😇
And this is what you get after you "free" 3 videos: youtube blocks the playback of next videos. This is on Firefox with uBlockOrigin #youtube#adblocker#block#ads
But excoriating Joe Biden for what he is doing helps no one. He is in an IMPOSSIBLE situation that Netanyahu put him in. The US has historically supported Israel since its creation, for better or worse.
I honestly think he is doing the best he can given the additional piles of shit the Middle East just dumped on his plate.
You couldn't do any better because, for one, you don't have access to the kind of information he does.
I block them but they just keep coming back
