I kept telling numerous people " #discord is NOT a forum, it is an IRC app, stop building your communities in it around stuff that needs to be found with a search engine and archived, it's a bad idea for numerous reasons including the overpopulation of server topics in an app that has a 100 server limit" but nobody listened. I hate being right.

Here’s a 2.5 yo post about an 800 lb gorilla in the Matrix idea. I’ve heard people brush it off, but their needs were often niche, fanciful, or delusional. I need some engineers to help me separate the facts, legends, myths, and bullshit of a large scale federated matrix chat network. In our experience, just enabling presence can bring a Synapse server to its knees, if even if just 1 user follows a BIG room. What if many folks follow MANY big … 1/2

But if you think matrix is too complicated, you could always try XMPP instead. The @snikket_im server and apps might be the best place to start. Although eJabberD now supports both protocols:

Chat is a chronological firehose, good for temporally transient information, largely ungrouped. Forums are a topical tree, good for longer-lasting information grouped by subject.
If you would write it down in real life (including email) then use a forum.
If you would only say it out loud (in the hallway or on a call) then chat is perfectly fine.
And if you say it out loud while someone else writes it down, tell your assistant to use a forum.
Discord is just bad and everyone who considers using it for anything serious like a #FLOSS project should get forced to reconsider because Discord is ableist garbage and has unacceptable ToS!

Just downloaded the new Clubhouse app. I used it during the lockdown, but it really never stuck with me. However, this re-release, making it a "Snapchat for voice," is kind of intriguing though!
