came across this photo in the KITLV collection while looking for images of opera houses for my upcoming talk. although it looks harmless, it's actually a manifestation of Dutch cruelty and racism. This was the set for the opera put on by prisoners in the Dutch concentration camp for Indonesian communists and nationalists circa 1928, in Boven-Digoel in #Papua. Although internees had not been charged with any crime, they were not allowed to leave. #colonialism#Indonesia https://digitalcollections.universiteitleiden.nl/view/item/731071
Lots of other white men, including some of my husband’s [#journalism colleagues, were quick to comment that we shouldn’t jump to conclusions. Well, that’s bullshit. Even for people who did recognize the shootings as an act of #racism, I had to explain to them that it’s not just racism. It’s a #racialized#misogyny that’s very, very specific to #AsianWomen. ]
I bring that up only because many #fascists / #WhiteSupremacists really love to recruit #POC & exploit them to try to show public - we ain't #racist because we have #BIPOC people who support us.
Guess what folks? POC with massive #InternalizedRacism & #InternalizedMisogyny are easily recruited/exploited by #bigots for evil purposes. It's not new. It's been happening for a long time. It goes back to #colonialism & #imperialism divide/conquer tactics of Indigenous peoples genocides, globally.
The Nation’s chief says there's big plans for all the art & #artifacts once the Nation #repatriates all of their #cultural pieces from #RoyalBCMuseum & other #museums from around the world that have Snuneymuxw artifacts.
Similar to #Canada’s #ResidentialSchool system. The last residential school closed in 1996. (Grollier Hall, closed in 1997, wasn't state-run residential school.)
The U.S. Federal Indian boarding school system ran from 1819-1969 & included 408 federal schools.
This year's topic was decoding digital colonialism.
This session was particularly improvised as the original plan was to share a dialogue with @hellais on open technologies to guarantee human rights. Enjoy!
She said there is “nothing #Indigenous about the RCMP.”
“They can hire Indigenous people but it doesn’t change their many #HumanRights violations and their continued role in #MMIWG. #RibbonSkirts are #sacred & not to be associated with #genocide,” she said, adding whoever thought of the idea should be fired.
The previous barriers to land ownership were a holdover from when #Canada considered #Indigenous people and governments to be wards of the government, according to Braker. Before the 1960s, governments required #FirstNations to get the approval of #IndianAgents before buying land.
Even after the practice was abolished, #BritishColumbia had its own #legislation preventing First Nations from holding property.
Alternative history. If the US had just given up at this point of war, all of (united) Korea would probably be in the same stage as Vietnam today. That is: just fine.
But they went on for 3 years. Killing 2-3 million Koreans to save them from communism.
Then they killed 1-3 million Vietnamese to try to save them from #communism and lost.
#MackenzieKing’s “cheerleading” for #Hitler’s regime got a tremendous boost during his tour of landmarks of the #Nazi “miracle,” as Teigrob recounts in riveting detail. The photographs tell a very chilling story as well, especially one that shows King sitting proudly in Hitler’s seat at the All-German Sports Competitions while surrounded by Nazi bigwigs in full swastika-studded regalia.
#France admits it’s lost control of parts of #NewCaledonia, the world’s third-largest producer of critical EV metal nickel
The French government is moving to regain full control of the Pacific territory of New Caledonia, High Commissioner Louis Le Franc said, as extra security forces arrive in the archipelago to end a week of violent protests by pro-independence groups.
Le Franc said new security deployments, after French President Emmanuel Macron’s government declared a state of emergency, would help reassert control following violence that left behind burned cars, torched stores and improvised barricades along roads.
PS. It's truly disgusting to see them refer to a country only based on their export./Farhad
Streaming now from Goldsmith, Dana Erekat (CEO of whyze) & Eyal Weizman (Forensic Architecture) open a symposium on the role of architecture and planning in colonialism (focused on Palestine, but it's a broader discussion architects refuse to have)
